Formal nights/dress codes on the Liberty

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

My teenage son has dress pants, shirt, tie and shoes but it turns out that his suit jacket is now too small. Will he be required to wear a jacket for formal nights in the MDR? I don't want the embarrassment of being turned away. Also, I'm a little unclear as to what casual nights attire is for teenagers in the MDR - will he and his friend be allowed to wear knee length shorts and (clean, plain) tee-shirts? Are sandals allowed? Tennis shoes?

Thanks :)

And if they really do not want to where pants to dinner and prefer to be more comfortable in shorts, they can go to the Windjammer for dinner. Just no tank tops or sleeveless shirts in Windjammer at any time.

Not true.

They ask for no tank tops in the MAIN DINING ROOM. There is absolutely no such rule about the Windjammer.

Thanks for your help. Other than his dress pants, I think the only long pants my son has are jeans! Do you think those would be alright? Hmmmm. We may be dining in the Windjammer all week :(

More and more cruisers are like you. They don't want to dress according to the suggestions. Therefore your family will not be the only ones wearing jeans to the dining room, even on formal night.

Jacket is definitely not required, and jeans are okay. Personally, I find lightweight khaki/tan pants more comfortable for a Caribbean cruise, but if that's not in his wardrobe, and you don't want to buy a couple pair for the cruise, then there is not a problem with the jeans.

I think you misunderstood. I do want to follow the suggestions and for formal nights we will be dressed to the nines - except for the lack of jacket on my son that is! I was simply asking for some clarification for casual nights. I may try and get him a pair of docker pants but if not I was just wondering if jeans would be acceptable in the MDR on casual nights. Definitely not wanting to bringing down the tone of the place though!

Many wear jeans, should not be a problem.

OH. Definitely ok on casual nights. :)

Hi there,

Your son (or any passenger) will not be turned away from the dining room for wearing jeans. Jeans are not even mentioned by name in the suggested dress code and I have seen jeans in the dining room on every single cruise we've been on. There is no reason you have to eat in the Windjammer every night - go, enjoy the dining room.

Having said that, since you are going on a warm weather cruise, would your son consider wearing something lighter than jeans? I find they are so heavy for the Caribbean and the Bahamas (anywhere it is hot). We have worn them on the airplane coming from Canada in cold weather, but once we got to Florida or the Caribbean, they were put away for the duration! Does he have casual light pants? Dockers? Some pants zip off into shorts - those are useful.

Just a suggestion. :) Have fun.

.

Thanks for your help everyone, I just spoke with my son and we're going shopping this evening for some light docker type pants. Maybe some button shirts - he does have quite a few nice 3 button, collared polo shirts...maybe those will suffice. Ugh. I hate this. My 7 year old and I have tons of nice skirts and dresses but my 17 year old hates shopping for clothes :p

Polo shirts are common in the dining room.

Just off the Liberty. Have two boys 14, 16.

Formal night you will be fine. Casual night my boys had shorts or khakis on. They both had "collard shirts" with either shorts or pants. I think the younger one had shorts on and my older had khakis on for the casual nights.

We saw all kinds of dress in the dinning room from what I would call sport shorts to the nines.

As long as you are comfortable in what you have on you will be fine.

I can't help but smile when I see people talking about not wearing jeans on a warm weather cruise because of the heat.

In DFW the "feels like" temp is routinely between 102 and 110 from late June (sometimes) through mid September. The actual temp the last few days topped 100 a couple of times...and we are having a mild summer. I see people in jeans every day.

WIMPS!!! Man up...put on them jeans! :D

Aww, I know you meant that in the nicest way... I think... :p

Anyway, please understand that for those of us not used to hot weather, the last thing some of us want to wear is jeans. You are used to the heat. You are acclimatized. I see locals in the Islands all the time wearing jeans - they are simply used to it.

I meant it nicely...for the most part.

After all...the MDR is climate controlled. It's not like they keep it at constant 90 degrees. :D

If you notice...you will often see people commenting about not wearing jeans because of the heat in the same thread as people commenting that they like a light jacket because the MDR often is a little cold.

You just can't please some people. :D

And the OP is from Houston, TX...they would also be acclimated.

I think you're sort of bringing it into this thread, though. Sure, a couple people (including me) have mentioned a personal preference of a lighter-weight pant, but nobody is saying jeans are simply too hot for a warm-weather cruise. (I've seen that expressed before in other threads, but not this one so far.)

I, too, have never understood the comments that jeans are too hot. Inside the ship is cool all the time. No reason not to wear them inside anywhere. My husband always wears jeans in the MDR on casual nights. If he decides to go outside to walk, he changes into shorts. He stays in jeans if he is going to the casino. It's plenty cool there. And jeans are great for the ice shows!

What's not to understand? Some people prefer not to wear jeans. To say you can't even understand someone thinking they're too hot seems odd.

I would rather wear something to dinner that wouldn't necessitate me going to change, in order to enjoy walking in outside areas of the ship. That doesn't mean I can't understand your comments on it - just a different perspective.

Based on two weeks ago. There are 2 formal nights and the rest are casual. It list shorts are acceptable for casual. Only thing not allowed in main dining room are tank top and swim shorts. Gone are the days of enforcement. Relax you are on a cruise.

No, the guidelines still list shorts as not appropriate for dinner in the MDR. You're right about enforcement, but not about what is requested.

I have the compass for every night and I'm looking right at them. They have formal, smart casual and casual. Two nights are listed as formal and five nights are listed as casual. Smart casual is listed only for chef's table and chops. Then under casual it list what is acceptable and it clearly says shorts are acceptable. So sorry you are wrong. Guidelines have changed for the liberty, I can not speak for any other ship.

That is great news. I just love these threads and all the judging that goes on. I think RCCL has moved on and left some of the cruisers in the past.
