Temps on board

We have a group traveling Aug 26 Alaska SB on Millie. The group has many first timers, none of us have done Alaska. I've checked out forecasted temps in port but what can we expect on board? Is the MDR kept cool, moderate? I assume at sea will be cool, windy, possibly rainy.

68 and below I'd call cool

69 - 75 I'd call moderate

76+ I'd call warm to hot

Every ship is different, even each night on a given cruise it can be different. They try to regulate the temperatures, but as people go outside to the open decks, fresh air comes in, be it hot or cold. Further, as people leave their balcony doors open, it throws off the entire temperature regulation system.

 

Bring layers, bring a sweater or shawl or some kind of wrap to dinner. You might never need it, but you'll be prepared just in case.

Wife would say it is cool on the ship... I would say it's hot on the ship. Sorry.

Do take some sort of wrap. The A/C often keeps public areas quite chilly. ;)

We go to Alaska often and have had a myriad of weather conditions ... sometimes, even downright warm!! We've never noticed the indoor temps to be uncomfortable ... never too hot, never too cold ... and that is with wearing jeans and a lightweight shirt.

It does seem as though on formal nights, they tended to turn the temp up a bit in the main dining room to accommodate women wearing sleeveless gowns / dresses. Now that Celebrity no longer has formal nights, I am wondering if that is still the case.

I'm always cold - I hate the dining rooms and the theater in the Caribbean., although the air conditioning is more sensible than it was years ago! I usually wear long sleeves and a jacket in them. Pashmina shawls are usually available on board in the gift shops if you get cold. I had less problems with the temperatures onboard in Alaska and on Trans-Atlantic cruises.

 

There have been blankets available at the pool on some of my cruises. I often take one with me - and keep it in my tote bag so I have it to go to the theater.

 

I find cuddleduds (insulated underwear) to be easy to pack, lightweight, and easy to use for layering. I also bought a systems jacket from Lands End which can be used with or without the lining. The lining can be used as a separate jacket.

I have never needed a jacket or sweater in the MDR, bars or casino. In the cabin you can regulate the temperature.

 

For Alaska layering is the best option.

We went in September & had mild temperatures, light jacket/rain jacket with a long sleeved shirt worked fine. We both bought North Face jackets for the trip-never wore them:mad:.

Well your acceptable temperature range is really narrow :D ha ha

 

We've had *everything* in Alaska.

 

The most useful item we've found is a thin, longer length hooded Gore Tex jacket that zips up. It will keep you warm and absolutely zero rain can get in. It's rather warm but it packs very small and we bring it on every trip land or sea.

We got ours on sale for about $75 at Cabela's. Your coldest day is likely going to be sailing through the glacier but you could have a cold day in one of the ports. It just varies to much, which is obviously NOT what you're used to if 68 is cold and 78 is hot!! (just saying :p)

 

The ship will also have plenty of stacks of fleece jackets, sweatshirts, etc. for sale on every Alaska cruise. No worries there, unless you're like me and don't like to have clothing with the name of a vacation or sports team on it. Note the not so subtle marketing that was done on our last Alaskan cruise: Way up at Oceanview (the buffet) they left the doors open to the deck and the cold air was coming in. Right inside those chilly doors they had a table full of sweatshirts and fleece, ready for you to buy because it was so cold out. We didn't fall for it, but they sure were selling a lot.

 

Since you will likely be bringing more "bulk" than you would on a Caribbean cruise, use a Space Bag and press out the air. We have done that and it really works for getting more in that suitcase.

Oh fyi I like a moderate to cool temp too, and have rarely needed a sweater or shawl on board.
