Norwegian Breakaway with a 14 month old?!

I would like to take my son on a cruise this October and he will be 14 months. We were looking at the Anthem of the Seas 5 day cruise to Bermuda or the Norwegion Breakaway to Bahamas for 7 days. Has anyone been on the breakaway ship with a baby? Are there a lot of things to do for him. I didn't see there was a baby pool but I saw the Royal Carribean Anthem had one. I read a lot of the ships don't have a pool for babies still in swim diapers so that was a negative of the Breakaway. What about the babies programs and play areas?

Has anyone been on both and have comparisons or which you'd prefer for a little one?! Thanks! clear.png?emoji-smile-1742

What does your 14 month old do at home? Well, you'll do about the same things! Toddlers like to "toddle", so find an out of the way area and let them run about!

NO ship has "baby pools"...some have splash areas, but no one in diapers are allowed in the pools. You can bring a blow up TUB and put a couple ice bucket's worth of water in...fine for "splashing". Empty into a floor or shower drain...NOT into the pools!

Royal may be a better bet for your baby, because they do have a little splash pool for the toddlers. RC also has babysitting for a fee. I saw many happy babies on the Breakaway though. It's a big ship and things are very casual onboard. The babies seemed happy- the parents were tired.

We just cruised the BA with an almost three year old and a 7 month old. Whether allowed or not, there were many young ones in the splash area with swim diapers (the first picture above). (The 3 year old is potty trained, and we didn't put the 6 month old in any pool.) No diapered kids were in the kids/adults pool (second picture).

The third picture is an inside area on deck 16 for 6 months to three years. Open 9 am to 9 PM. The toys rotate, so don't expect to see exactly as the picture. This area is with parent. There will also be one or two sessions per day with the staff (with parent) for 6 months to 3 years old in the main indoor kids area. Our granddaughter loved it the one time we could take her. Unfortunately, the times were inconvenient for us (lunch time and dinner time).

We also cruised on the Liberty of the Seas with the same Granddaughter when she was 18 months. They had a very small and shallow pool area for kids in diapers. Next May, granddaughters (and parents) are trying the Anthem for a 9 day.

Will you really need a ship's pool in October? If you leave from NYC or Bayonne, the first sea days could be too cool to even care about a kids' pool. Once you're in Bermuda, Snorkel Park (fee) is very close to where you dock (walk-able, although there is a tram). It's great for little ones who want to wade in and splash and feed the fish.

I'm not sure I'd even take the 14 month old off the ship in Nassau- not much for his age!

Both NCL and RCL have highchairs in the restaurants and limited kids' menus. The staff on both made kids feel welcome on the ships (as opposed to some passengers LOL!).

Pick either one and have fun!

That splash area is for potty trained children, although some parents think their little darlings should endanger the health of others. A nursery is a place where parents can leave their babies and toddlers in the care of others, that is a small playroom.

Yes. You were incorrect with both of your statements that they did not exist.

Definition "a room in a house for the special use of young children."

The OP has a diapered child, a splash area for potty trained kids doesn't help her. The Anthem has a staffed nursery, one downside most NCL ships have for parents of babies and toddlers is that they do not have a staffed nursery.

So let me be more clear, the Breakaway doesn't have a STAFFED nursery where you can drop kids off, or a splashpark FOR DIAPERED CHILDREN.

And just so I don't confuse anyone, neither ships have a nursery, or a garden center, where you can purchase plants.

nurs·er·y

ˈnərs(ə)rē/

noun

  • a room in a house for the special use of young children.

    • a place where young children are cared for during the working day; a nursery school.
noun: day nursery; plural noun: day nurseries

    • a place where young plants and trees are grown for sale or for planting elsewhere.

I took my now 5 yo daughter on cruises when she was about 8 or 9 months (awesome-so easy to manage with an infant) and when she was about 18 months. The second cruise was on the breakaway. After that cruise, we decided we would not cruise again until all kids old enough for kids club. There was a play room on breakaway and parents had to be there. No paid babysitting. The cruse was great but, for us, it was exhausting-I think that toddler age it is just tough to cruse with kids. I would suggest disney where there is a nursery for a fee, the escape which has a nursery for a fee or another line's ship where there is babysitting so you can have a night or two out with your spouse. I know a lot of people love to travel with their toddlers butI just thought it was a lot of money to spend and it was actually more relaxing to be back at home!

This is from the RC website regarding babysitting on Anthem of the Seas:

Babysitting is offered both in a group setting, and individually in your stateroom. In stateroom babysitting must be reserved through the Guest Relations Desk (Purser's Desk) at least 24 hours in advance.

It cannot be reserved prior to the cruise vacation and there is no guarantee that sitters will be available. The service is offered between 8:00 am and 2:00 am when personnel is available. Sitters will be assigned on a first come first served basis

Children MUST be at least 1 year old.

Approximate Rate: $19 per hour for up to three children within the same family.

Times and prices are subject to change without notice. Payment will be made using your onboard SeaPass card.

On the BA on the pool deck right next to the kiddie pool and play area (not that you could use the pool anyway with a 14 month old in diapers) or in October

The genius designers put in a plexiglass smoking box that has slits for the smoke to escape from and those slits are directly open to the kiddie area The box is not visible in the above posted pix but it is there nonetheless

The smoking box usually is full to the brim too

Also you may well personally restrict yourself from strolling the baby in the 6/7/8 ocean atrium area (which is quite beautiful btw ) due to the excessive smoke coming from the open concept casino

Of course the above is only an issue if you want your child to avoid secondhand smoke

If I were to take a 14 mo on a cruise to Bermuda ..which I wouldn't btw...

It would be on a celebrity ship because the casino is non smoking. Not sure if celebrity goes into October though to Bermuda

Again this is only if you want to avoid secondhand smoke near your baby
