QM2 to host film premiere

Recommended Posts

You might expect the premiere disruption to be mentioned in current literature for those who have not yet booked.
But that would be to assume Cunard cared about its customers. It doesn't. It just cares about relieving them of money, then doing exactly what the company wants in order to make even more money.
As I said, the pinnacle of cynicism and arrogance.
A further update.

Just received the information from Cunard. Among offers for how to enjoy the extended stay in NYC:

20% off tickets Radio City Rockettes with discount code QUEEN. Unfortunately, as per the linked website, discount for code QUEEN is only available on/after 10 December 2017. QM2 sails 8 December 2017.

Savings on tickets (quantity not defined) for Phantom of the Opera. Unfortunately, saving cannot be determined without creating sign on account with linked website.
Perhaps Cunard will arrange an excursion to see Phantom, or at the very least an official transfer to Manhattan. Will have to wait and see what is available when we ge onboard.

If you wait to see what's available when you get on board, I suspect you'll be sorely disappointed, moldgirl.
Cunard's offer so far has been a 20 per cent discount on (doubtless expensive) theatre tickets and no transport to get there or back.
If that's as deep as they want to dig for those who have already paid up at this point, it is difficult to imagine a crater of generosity suddenly opening up when passengers step on board...
I may be wrong, of course. But Cunard's refusal to even discuss the matter with me would suggest my prognosis is accurate! Let's wait and see.

Since Carnival's ( CCL/CUK : NYSE/LSE ) Cunard Line is sending eMails to Register for a Win of this Film contest ..

but trying to do that now is not well. maybe too many want to register a chance?

Where the Cunard vessels dock , usually, in Red Hook, Brooklyn, NYC, NY at Pier 12.

Most know, No Subway in Red Hook etc.. you do have that Expensive 2 Way TOLL Battery Tunnel.

Getting to see shows in (Town) Manhattan is not the easiest from Red Hook..

At least QM2 will have some publicity for this. ( See i did find an atribute!)
For people staying in the Greater NYC area:

Stay in New Jersey at usually 60-85 % less and the same benefits in your Hotel Chains benefits too.

Ask about transport, parking etc..

Do your research and well. So many places and things to do.

Has it been stated anywhere, specifically, that the stars are actually attending? I've attended premiers that hosted all those involved in the production, but the stars didn't attend as they don't have much desire to mingle with grunts. And I'm rather doubtful that boarding the QM2 is much of an incentive for this group.

Quite right, the Cunard press release makes no specific mention of the stars attending the premier that I can see. However, one indication I have seen that tends to indicate the stars might actually be attending the premier is found on this page from the Cunard web site.

http://www.cunard.com/cunard-experience/articles/the-greatest-showman/

Near the top of that page is this statement.

"In partnership with 20th Century Fox, our flagship ocean liner Queen Mary 2 is hosting the first-ever floating, movie premiere. This December, we are rolling out the red carpet for the glittering premiere of The Greatest Showman and its a-list stars Hugh Jackman, Michelle Williams, Zendaya, Zac Efron and Rebecca Ferguson."

Thank you, John. I'm still not totally convinced, but I'll be very happy to be proven wrong. It would offer some wonderful photo ops for the QM2.

Brigittetom has hit the nail on the head - wonderful photo ops for the QM2, aka, good publicity for Cunard. At the expense of those who have already paid to use the ship.
The pinnacle of arrogance and cynicism, as I have said previously. And as the days pass, still no contact from Cunard (which is no longer a surprise to us).....

Perhaps you should just forego your fare and cancel. We can see how much distress it will cause you to be aboard.

I'm feeling ornery lately, but in my opinion a late departure, even with certain parts of the ship unavailable in the meantime, doesn't compare to an itinerary where the ports get jumbled or dropped close to departure.

That's quite right, but there is a difference between the situations.
I think the difference with ports being changed and this is that ports is probably (or at least should be) down to external influences, such as weather.
This one is entirely the choice of Cunard. The unavoidable is unavoidable. This one was avoidable, or at least should have been had it been for Cunard's irresistible desire to make a profit twice over. And then not to communicate with those who've paid a dare to complain??

Your quite right. We are chilled about the change in the Caribbean itinerary, we just love being aboard with Cunard and looking forward to the trip so a few hours lost from a few areas of the ship on one particular day really is pretty much meaningless to us.
> We are on that cruise (actually the round trip

You know, I think at least one other passenger who hasn't received the email is on a back-to-back. Are you booked on M745, or some other cruise number? I'm wondering if Cunard only sent the "premier email" to those booked specifically on M745.
We are booked on M743B and I got an Email from them yesterday - they must be reading cruise critic after all.

I sent an email to one of the customer service managers that I tracked down, yesterday morning. I specifically pointed out that those on trips other than M745 hadn't received the message. I wonder if that helped shake it loose?

I'm not totally convinced either. I happened to stumble upon that page on the Cunard web site that tends to indicate the stars might attend the premier via a google search. I can't seem to find it by actually navigating the Cunard web site itself. Based on the URL, that page is part of "The Cunard Experience" section of their web site. But I can't find that specific page by following the link on the home page to that section of the site, just the page about entering the contest for chance to attend the premier. So take it for what that's worth, I guess.

There are a lot of "orphan" pages on the Cunard site. I knew there was a page describing the NYT-crossword puzzle themed activities on that same trip. I finally had to use a Google search to find it.

But what is the problem exactly? You are on the ship, which is wonderful, the bars and restaurant will be open, as will most of the amenities of the ship. The ship will leave late, which may give splendid views, but it won't arrive late in Southampton, because it can go a bit more quickly. In fact you may get the chance to see what she can do, which rarely happens nowadays. OK, the shops and casino may be closed on the first night, but you can waste your money later on.
Jane

I really can't see any reason for discontent.

I've not seen anything from Cunard that states that all of the bars will be open for passenger use, particularly those on decks 2 & 3. With the Queens Room and both theaters being used for the premier, the amenities actually available for all of the 2500 or so passengers are somewhat limited.

But neither has there been any official word as to what rooms will be closed, has there? So far it's all supposition.

At a guess, those who 'can't see any reason for discontent' will be those who have not paid to be on board for this trip.
They may well be unable to 'see any reason for discontent' that Cunard has simply refused to talk about this situation with me so far, despite using three separate channels of communication.
That refusal to communicate - for me - indicates there really is a reason to feel discontent and Cunard know that, so are avoiding the issue.

Oh my goodness - this is a few hours of a whole week. I am sure everyone will survive in pure luxury and comfort. How lucky are we. And yes, I have paid to be on this trip and I consider myself extremely fortunate indeed!

Finally got around to reading this thread. It seems to me that the main grumble is lack of communication from Cunard, either to individuals or to all the passengers. Common courtesy would be (at the very least) to inform the passengers which areas of the ship will be closed to them and for how long. And yes, part of me would be cross that I was denied a run of the whole ship, but...

After that, 7 days sailing on the QM2, how wonderful. Wish I could be on board.

Cunard have posted this -

We’re proud to announce that we’ll be welcoming Hugh Jackman and the rest of the cast for the world premiere of The Greatest Showman on board the world’s greatest ocean liner, Queen Mary 2.
P.T Barnum the inspiration of the film sailed on Cunard ships in the 19th Century, and we have him to thank for bringing a touch of glamour to the entertainment on our voyages.

To be frank, does anyone seriously expect Cunard to be forthcoming? From my experience on these boards and interaction with the Purser's Desk, no response seems to be Cunard's communication policy.

Our long time TA called yesterday to wish us Bon Voyage. During our conversation, we mentioned the lack of details that have been forthcoming to passengers regarding the movie premier. He called his contact at Cunard and got some answers. It appears that Cunard's lack of information is primarily because the event was negociated by Carnival corporate rather than by Cunard and many at Cunard were not kept in the loop of information. According to the information I received, the QR will only be closed to passengers during the time of reception and the attendees will be escorted by security to the RC theater for the closed event. The Chart Room, Golden Lion, and most other public areas on decks 2 & 3 should be open for passengers to use during the event. Hopefully this information is accurate.

I just received an email from Cunard inviting me to watch a feed of the movie premiere event "live from the Red Carpet on Queen Mary 2" tomorrow beginning at 5:30pm local time. The link provided in the email is to the URL "cruise.cunard.com/pub/cc" plus a very long parameter of seemingly random characters. Not sure, but I suppose that parameter included in the URL may personally identify me as an "invitee" to watch the live stream. Interestingly, when I click on the link now (a day early) it sends me to Cunard's facebook page. I'm curious, so I imagine I'll be watching at least some of the event tomorrow.

Facebook Live is a cheap way to live stream any event so I wouldn't be surprised if the red carpet event is on their Facebook page.

The Look Hotel, which is just a few blocks from the terminal, tweeted this, earlier this evening:

The Queen Mary 2 cruise ship will be sponsoring fireworks tomorrow night, north of Governor's Island at 7:15PM! Come out to Red Hook and watch them with us!

I hope I can find a vantage point for capturing a shot of the fireworks over the ship.

Didn't see this post beforehand, but I did watch most of the approximately 90-minute Facebook Live feed from QM2 on Cunard's facebook page. For those that may be interested in watching a replay of it, here is a link to the video.

I really don’t think want to be negative but one of the best things about cruising is leaving a port and commencing a journey. Despite the enforced Hollywood delay till midnight, it seems the ship is not leaving anytime soon (1 am). Determined to stay up but the excited crowds are quickly diminishing.

Checking QM2's track on AIS, it looks like you did finally start to get underway about 1:00am. It probably won't go over too well to learn that Hugh Jackman said during the onboard red carpet broadcast he was told the ship was probably not going to leave until 1:00. Seems the passengers may have been left in the dark about that.

All in the past now. Enjoy your crossing (and take good care of Mary for the next two weeks!).

I wasn't expecting the ceremony to take over the Grand Lobby and Deck 2 aft of that as it appeared to in the feed (I guess we only had our own guesses about what areas would be affected). If they intended to showcase the glamour and ambience of an ocean liner voyage I don't understand why they covered the Deck 2 walls with movie posters.

Was first seating Britannia dinner affected? Were passengers permitted to use the Deck 2 entrance to Britannia?

Were passengers permitted to view the red carpet in the O bby from Deck 3?

Disappointing start but overall the crossing exceeded high expectations. Will provide in the coming days a more complete review.
