Breakaway - cruising New Year's alone, would you do it?

There are lots of people who enjoy meeting others at mealtime. If the host/hostess doesn't ask if you want to be seated at a sharing table, tell them. My husband and I always ask for a sharing table and have met some lovely people. We always enjoy hearing about their travels.

Thanks for the tip! :)

Good for you! What airport are you flying into? What hotel? There are some very nice, helpful people on the east coast departures board.

Flying into LGA and I'm going to use Hotwire and let the universe "decide" where I'm going to stay... within reason. ;p

Waldorf Astoria closed - Dont they know about your big plans? 😉

We are doing the same Cruise as we did this Year, Epic in June tru the Med 😊. Right now a British, a Scottish, one Belgium, one from Florida and a German (that would be me). One from Australia is still in planning Status.

In case you are interested in a Review of a fellow solo Cruiser on the Epic, look for Bra_BE2014, you can also find it in my history of posts.

You will find the right Dress for sure, its the one which makes YOU feel beautiful about yourself.

Please remember: even if life has been harsh and nasty, it brought you to this exact moment where an amazing Cruise is coming up in just a couple of weeks 🍸

Re: The Waldorf Astoria... right? LOL It is slightly disappointing, but I'll manage to get over it. Ever since I watched the movie Serendipity (about a dozen times) I've wanted to have a drink or a meal in that hotel. I'm sure if I try really hard, I can find my way back to NY again though. It's closed for years... that's some renos they're doing.

Thank you for reminding me that life is amazing. I'm a lucky lady to be able to just head off on a NYE cruise... even if it is alone. Maybe in spite of it, I'll have the grandest time. :drink:

And one more thing...a previous poster mentioned about reunions. Well, I have met up with my ‘cruise fam’ a number of times both on cruises and on land, amazing people who I’d never have met without travelling solo. We are having an almighty ‘autumn meltdown ‘ which kicks off tomorrow in Scotland, full on fancy dress madness with an Alice in Wonderland theme. There’s even a long distance romance in the mix, that couple are currently doing the Epic TA just now, it’s all too magical! Cheers to loving yourself and living every minute that you can!!

Sounds like a great time! I love costume parties (your fancy dress) though nobody I know would ever do it. Not even on Halloween! I read a bit of a review by a lady from Manchester who met someone special on her cruise. Love happens all over the world.

Thanks... I'm trying very hard to be happy and start putting me first for a change. ;)

Thanks and back at you!

Have a great time on your Cruise 🍹🍸

How about we suggest our favourite Drinks to Monnom, so she can toast to us from afar...

Please have a Mango Meltdown for me 😊

Oooooh Mango Meltdown sounds yummy! I'll try and remember this and toast you with this specific drink. :tropical-drink:

Good for you to take the plunge, I am sure you will have a great time.

To ensure you don’t get lonely why don’t you turn this into a live review and all of us who are landlocked being envious can keep you company.

Enjoy!

That sounds like a great idea, but I wouldn't know what to do? I posted a short review of a cruise a while ago, but it wasn't anything exciting. I'm not sure I'm getting the internet package, but if I do, I'll post something for sure.

Thanks for the good wishes... I think it'll be a great time. :D

I took the plunge and booked the cruise! I honestly can't believe I'm doing this. I'm scared and excited. LOL Strange combination for a holiday.

I can totally relate as that's exactly how I felt earlier this year. I had a fantastic first cruise experience in a Solo Studio on The Epic and I would love to do a New Year cruise... I've booked my next solo cruise for next summer though. You will have a wonderful time I'm sure. :)

Edited to add... my 2nd cruise is New York to Bermuda next summer... also very excited to be cruising out of New York. Looking forward to hearing about your experience.

That's a good way to look at it. 13 times, wow! That's a lot of cruising. Hence the name, I guess ;)

You will love it. I sail solo all the time. I enjoy it because everything is on MY schedule. If I want to relax, I relax. If I want to explore or meet people there are tons of opportunities. Breakaway is a great ship with plenty to do, or plenty of chances to just be by yourself and get away from it all. Kindle on a balcony is one of my guilty pleasures. I also love the casino, and by the end of the first day of the cruise I've made plenty of friends at the craps table that I see every day the rest of the cruise.

Don't hesitate to do it!

Take a peek at my reviews...I’m sure you’ll get the idea! As for drink of choice, I also love a mango meltdown...and prosecco, and vodka and and and! Try a shot of cafe patron too...best danger in the world!!

Mango meltdown really sounds yummy! The others though, sound pretty strong and I like my drinks weak cause I'm a lightweight. LOL

I'm seriously debating booking a cruise for one out of New York for New Year's. I've never travelled anywhere alone before and I'm a little nervous about it. Would 'you' do it? I'm worried instead of being home alone this year, I'll be alone on a ship full of people

Go and enjoy.

That's great to hear! :) So many people seem to be cruising alone and I think NCL is really doing a great job with their solo cabins. Do any of the other cruise lines offer solo cabins?

I'm glad you enjoyed it so much, you're doing it again. I am very excited about cruising out of NY now, for sure. I've wanted to go back to NY for a long time and though it's alone, I am excited about being in The Big Apple! And now, thanks to you all... I am super excited to be sailing out of NY. I think it would be better in summer.

Absolutely! At the last minute I was forced to travel by myself and it turned out to be the best trip of my life. That was 8 years ago and I still chat with an amazing group of individuals i met with on the trip. Go have fun, just be a little cautious with alcohol consumption so that you do not get yourself into any undesired situations. Get involved in a few activities, dont be afraid to strike up a conversation the the person sitting next to you on the sundeck or dining room!

Enjoy and good luck!

Thank you! I am very excited about going and doing whatever I want for a week. No family, no kids, no ex, nobody! I wish I had a balcony, but it was way out of my budget and I think it'll be good to be in the studio cabins to mingle with others that are solo as well. I went ahead last night and bought the thermal suites pass... that's my guilty pleasure. I LOVE sitting in the water relaxing without the noise of the kids yelling. Don't get me wrong, I'm not some cranky old lady... but I do like the quiet areas at times too. ;p

Sounds like so many people have amazing solo experiences cruising. You must have met some great people to still be in touch 8 years later. Wow, I'm impressed.

I really didn't give much thought to consuming too much alcohol. I don't usually drink much alcohol, so the hangovers are going to be misery. NCL sells Party Patches though, so I'm going to load up on those and hope they help! Good idea on getting involved with activities on the ship. I don't think I'm getting off the ship unless it's to text or call home. I'm going to enjoy a quieter ship, I believe. ;)

I second, third and fourth what everyone is saying. My husband and I used to do everything together, but I also enjoyed my alone time. He died in a car accident a few years ago, and we had no children. I have been on several vacations alone since, one to a remote island with not many tourists on it. I loved it. I also took two cruises with girlfriends this year, and sometimes we are together, and sometimes we do our own thing. I haven't cruised alone yet, but I'm sure I will. I like hanging out on deck alone and reading and watching the sea. I used to live in NY, and I always wanted to cruise out of there. It sounds like a perfect place to start. Take an Uber or Lyft to the terminal. We do it all the time.

I've cruised solo 17 times, almost all on Norwegian. On Breakaway, I would absolutely do New Years Eve. Be sure to go to the solo travelers meeting on embarkation day. It will be listed in the newsletter (Freestyle Daily).

I'd do it in a heartbeat!

You will not be alone if you reach out to others by starting a conversation with them.

At mealtime ask to be seated at a sharing table.

Meet other solo travelers in the meetings at studio cabins lounge.

I don’t think you can share a table on NCL with Freestyle Cruising. You sit at a table according to your party size like a restaurant.

I was just on the Sun, did the PC from San Fran, first solo cruise after losing my DH and you certainly can ask to share a table. Every morning, and evening I was offered to share a table, no problem at all to meet others and wonderful to not have to dine alone.

OP, have a wonderful cruise and hopefully you'll feel as I and many others do, that it's really the greatest of experiences.

Enjoy :wine-glass:

Did my first solo in September (Dawn from Boston to Bermuda). I was apprehensive, but now I look back on it as one of the best cruises I've been on. NCL really knows how to take care of their solo passengers. I went to a specialty restaurant 5 nights. Thought it would be awkward, but it was awesome.

I'm sorry for your loss :(

It would be easy to do with some girlfriends... some moments I'm super excited and some moments, I'm terrified. It is what it is now, as it's all booked and paid for. I think cruising out of NY will be great.

Thanks :)
