ABQrobin Posted November 17, 2017 #3 Share Posted November 17, 2017 not the regular ferry, it looks like it was a specially booked catamaran for a group of German tourists. Once again, a reason to be careful when booking a tour outside of the cruise lines.

c-leg5 Posted November 17, 2017 #8 Share Posted November 17, 2017 (edited) This appears to be an English translation of the above link but it is unclear from the news report whether the cruiseline contracted the tour, or whether it was the group of tourists themselves. https://thebajapost.com/2017/11/16/catamaran-sinks-in-cozumel-95-german-passengers-rescued-including-a-baby/ I have never been to Passion Island but I was under the impression if you didn’t go by twister boat, or the long way round by road, you were transported by catamaran directly from your pier? ABQrobin Posted November 17, 2017 #9 Share Posted November 17, 2017 Google translate: Cozumel.- A catamaran-type tourist boat with 95 German passengers and a baby sank partially after being left adrift and being dragged by the strong waves in the northern part of the island. The engines of the boat "Mazu" failed halfway to Isla de la Pasión where they were taking tourists from a cruise. They were quickly dragged towards the high seas and the waves caused it to capsize. Private boatmen, diving tourism services, hotels, extreme sports and fishing, went to the place and, after 20 minutes of maneuvers, evacuated all, both crew and passengers. Meanwhile, the partially submerged catamaran was towed by another boat to a dry marina. The visitors came from the boat "Main Schiff 6" that landed this morning in Punta Langosta, and had contracted a tour with the company "Isla de la Pasión" to be taken to the place of the same name, boarding this boat, from the pier Aldora It was towards this place where the Germans were taken by the different boats after their rescue. Although there was an ambulance in the place, nobody required medical attention. A battleship of the Navy of Mexico went to the place of the initiate but did not intervene, the rescue being already taking place. Port Captaincy inspectors did not go to the dock to verify the status of passengers or investigate what happened. Sorry..... should have said not one of the big cruise companies. Main Schiff 6 is a German cruise line. All passengers came from there, according to article. Also, I have friends who live in Cozumel who say that the catamaran is an independent op. Glad everyone is safe. While it was an independent operation people need to know it still can happen.

This is the same translation as the link above. I am not sure what difference it makes what size cruise line you are sailing with? Are you saying this was not one of the forms of transport provided by the Isla Pasion company similar to what is provided to Carnival and Royal? Passion Island is an independent company isn't it? Rare crewsweeper Posted November 19, 2017 #12 Share Posted November 19, 2017 I think though the point is this was NOT a ferry!! Not a public ferry and not an independent cruise excursion ferry to the mainland. It was a catamaran excursion to Passion Island. But glad all were rescued safely. bUU Posted November 19, 2017 #13 Share Posted November 19, 2017 Most of the ferries I saw there this past week were catamarans but they are significantly larger than the one that sank.
Betty in Cozumel Posted November 20, 2017 #14 Share Posted November 20, 2017 The boat did not sink or capsize. It was a catamaran used to tender people from a cruise ship to Passion Island in the north. For us locals here in Cozumel; we are not familiar with this boat. IMHO it was overloaded with 95 people and the local boats from Cozumel responded very fast and got everyone off safely.
hawk1972 Posted November 20, 2017 #15 Share Posted November 20, 2017 The blue and yellow boat in this photo looks like the one we have ridden twice on excursions to Passion Island.
Betty in Cozumel Posted November 20, 2017 #16 Share Posted November 20, 2017 Yes these blue/yellow Ultramar tender boats are what we are mostly use to seeing transferring cruise ship passengers.
