roger001 Posted March 18, 2018 #2 Share Posted March 18, 2018 Free wifi, most do not. However, about all have wifi that you can access at some of the businesses when you buy something.
havanadaydreaming Posted March 18, 2018 #3 Share Posted March 18, 2018 any time I wanted WiFi at/near port on an island I just went and had a beer or a bite. Sent from my SM-G955U using Forums mobile app
VideoTech Posted March 18, 2018 #4 Share Posted March 18, 2018 Do most ports in Caribbean islands have WiFi access? Watch and see where the crew goes when they get off the ship. Usually there's a shop or cafe in the port area that offers free internet access...you'll be able to tell by the crew clustered around tapping on their phones. Otherwise, most shops and cafes in the ports will advertise their internet access...all you have to do is buy a drink or a meal. Finally, many U.S. cell phone carriers offer packages that can include data in many of the Caribbean islands. Check with your carrier.
sanger727 Posted March 18, 2018 #5 Share Posted March 18, 2018 Its not as easy to find as it sounds. On our last eastern Caribbean cruise we were fully prepared to buy something (drink or food) for WiFi access and only found it in 2 out of 4 ports. Not as easy to find as in the US. Rare BirdTravels Posted March 18, 2018 #6 Share Posted March 18, 2018 Be aware that “free” Wi-Fi in international ports (like some places in the US) are there explicitly to steal your personal information and infect your devices. Make sure you are 100% confident before you connect. And be especially wary of “free USB ports”. Like credit card skimmers, the are there to help themselves to your data if you unlock your device. Actually I just received an email from V@riz@n, 10dollars for day in most islands. So that’s probably the way to go. Thanks.

As you correctly point out, this can happen anywhere, including in many places here in the US. You should always be using a firewall, and preferably connecting over VPN. OCruisers Posted March 19, 2018 #9 Share Posted March 19, 2018 Crew memeber are good folks to ask. They are always a good source of where current free WIFI is located. ;)
Rare mking8288 Posted March 19, 2018 #10 Share Posted March 19, 2018 Not on a cruise ship, including NCL ... but, we don't worry about looking for open, unsecured WiFi or making a "small" purchase, especially for a few hours in these ports. Not worth our time, trouble & data security risks - many of the newer T-Mobile postpaid plans include international roaming, at slower 2.5G/3G speed, which is perfectly fine for basic email, news, weather & travel booking apps, etc. as long as they aren't demanding with bandwidth and/or latency, etc. Depending on one's choice & preference for VoIP, including WiFi calling that's hardware & carrier-specific in supporting - we have no trouble using cellular & WiFi data to make voice calls on Skype, FaceTime, Hangouts, Ooma (and, DW uses "WeChat" with her inner circle of family & friends, I don't) just about anywhere ... unlike video calling, WiFi calling only need a good 2.5G/256K to 3G (1- 3 Mbps, 2M is good) connection for it to work, nice to have faster 4G and LTE, but it's not a minimum requirement. For less than the price of a single alcohol beverage on a ship ... $10 USD, we get 1,000 MB or 1GB worth of 4G/HSPA+ global - international roaming data in 170 countries, based on actual usage as billed. Obviously, not a wise choice to streaming HD video, but these are among the cheapest rates ... where VPN secured WiFi from known SSiD's are available, usage is free abroad, at no charge. Between 2015 and this year, we spend an extra $5 USD on average while overseas and out of the U.S. on our data needs ... and, the free add-on data sim option turned my (unlocked) iPhone SE with an integrated battery case into a self-contained MiFi/hotspot that last up to 40 hours of continuous use. Just Google "Project Fi" for the details ... of course, feel free to join the crew at Dockyard in Bermuda next to the pirate ship and/or on the Nassau pier, outside corner at the post office/terminal building, if you can connect & get an "ip" address from the DHCP server at all.
