And I think we all can recall when we were told that cigarette smoking was safe.

Let's give it more time for additional research to be done before we raise the flags that it does no harm to those vaping or those around those that vape.

Its OK to be cautious about "side stream vapor" or whatever. It's not OK to ignore the science. There are a billion lives that can be saved if smokers switch to vaping, so we should encourage them. It's a classic case of harm reduction being better than prohibition.

NCL can do what it wants, but I think HAL's policy makes a lot of sense. It reduces side-stream vapor exposure to everyone, even those that pass by the smoking section. And it reduces the number of people in the smoking section, so the cruise line has less space they need to allocate to it. And the vapers are happier too, because they can enjoy a vape in the privacy of their cabins.

No science to that at all. Your entire argument is based on the false premise that smoking an electronic cigarette is safer or less dangerous than smoking a traditional tobacco cigarette. Smoking is smoking despite what type of cigarette the smoker utilizes.

Are cabins typically vented to the outside? Do I now need to worry about breathing in vaping fumes coming from another cabin?

On NCL, vaping is not allowed in the stateroom.

Right thanks. But what stops someone from doing it? Nothing. So I'm still curious if rooms share a common ventilation system or if they're separate. Same issue with cigarettes. They are not allowed but there is no employee in your room stopping you.

chengkp75 would be a better source for HVAC type questions

He's probably climbed through those things like Bishop in 'Aliens'...;p

The Earth is overcrowded as it is, if we can get rid of a billion smokers, what's the downside ?

I use the smaller set up in the casino so I do not put out so much steam/cloud but use my big mod in the stateroom. And yes, I am aware that technically we are not suppose to use them on our balcony or stateroom.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but from personal experience, if you vape in your stateroom, you do run the risk of setting off the "smoke" detector. :o

If you set off the smoke detector than there is more in that cloud than harmless vapor.

Remember that it's HAL that allows vaping in staterooms, and not NCL. I'm not sure about the ventilation systems.

Side stream vapor has very little in the way of harmful chemicals. The fact that we can detect parts per billion of these chemicals in the vape juice is not the same as in the vapor itself. Even then, nearly all poisons are harmless in small amounts and have to reach a certain level before they are a health hazard. So to be really sure, you have to do the research into the chemicals and how they impact you. I understand people who don't want the exposure, even if they do other risky things like drink alcohol that has this toxic stuff in it:

Volatile compounds in spirits [34]. All reported quantities in mg/100 mL of pure alcohol; i-amyl alcohols are 2-methyl-butanol and 3-methylbutanol.

There is no, and can be no, empirical evidence of that. Since there are absolutely no standards or regulations as to what manufacturers can and do put in the liquid used in electronic cigarettes, there is no way to reach a valid conclusion as to the safety of smoking them. It is a 100% absolute fact that many manufacturers include liquid nicotine in their products which is one of the most toxic substances known to man. Not only is it more toxic than tobacco infused with nicotine, a vaporized liquid is considerably smaller than the solid nicotine components in a standard cigarette. A such these much more toxic products can and do get deeper into the lungs and can easily cause massively more damage. One can choose to ignore these facts if they so desire, but that does not in any way change that they are 100% fact. Smoking an electronic cigarette and the by products of their use is by no means what-so-ever 'safer' than smoking a traditional tobacco cigarette.

The difference is, when I have a glass of wine, I am not forcing someone else to drink alcohol. Can you say that about vaping?

Here is the conclusion from the most comprehensive report on e-cigarettes yet from the prestigious National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. They recently released a 600 page report on e-cigarettes.

A panel of experts analyzed the findings of 800 peer-reviewed studies and came out with a grab bag of conclusions about e-cigarettes’ health impact — finding that e-cigarettes are safer than conventional cigarettes for individual smokers.

“Overall, e-cigarette aerosol contains fewer numbers and lower levels of toxicants than smoke from combustible tobacco cigarettes,” the committee found. There is also “conclusive evidence that completely substituting e-cigarettes for combustible tobacco cigarettes reduces users’ exposure to numerous toxicants and carcinogens present in combustible tobacco cigarettes” and “substantial evidence that completely switching from regular use of combustible tobacco cigarettes to e-cigarettes results in reduced short-term adverse health outcomes in several organ systems.”

Here, the evidence came from in vitro studies, animal studies, and human trials involving smokers who switched to e-cigarettes. (The human studies showed e-cigarette users had improvements in a range of cardiovascular, respiratory, and even dental health outcomes.)

Ignore the research if you will but the fact remains that although fresh air is still the best thing for your lungs, e-cigarettes are MUCH safer than traditional tobacco cigarettes.
