Drinks Package

One should take into account the currency value in these prices. Today for example, the £39-95 price is $52.40 in U.S. dollars and $68.12 in Canadian dollars. To take into account both passengers, the package for us is $136.24 CDN. You might see why we would not consider this per day charge as it represents our minimum daily wage. For the sake of comparison, what would £39-95 represent in the UK?

Minimum wage =£7.83 ph x 7 = £55.51pd

So that's £80 per day for a couple. I just don't get it. That's a helluva lot of booze, coffee, soft drinks

Your comment sent me to Google where I found that the average daily consumption of alcohol in the UK, based for both men and women and expressed in £'s is £8.8

Those with the ship's package will unlikely consume 9 X their daily home consumption, so the package price should be of some concern to them.

You can’t compare the two - you’re on holiday remember not at work!!

Anyway what does it matter, people can choose to spend and drink as much as they want on their own holiday, it’s their business and no one else’s. it’s also quite patronising to assume people are so stupid that they can’t make an informed decision

I just can't imagine how you can get through that much in a day, let alone every day. So I have a large glass of wine in the bar before dinner. £12 Then we have a bottle of wine at the table. £18? during the day, I might have a Costa Coffee - £2.95? So that's £32.95 between us for one day. Even if we have another drink and add £10, its 42.95. This package would cost us £80 pppd>

Each to their own - It's obvious that, even reading just the posts on this site, there are those who would find the package great value whilst on holiday whatever they may or may not drink at home (their business), others might find it fifty/fifty whilst the remainder wouldn't get near getting value from the package.

Whilst it's optional, no problem, do your own maths and then buy or avoid as the case may be.

Our question is based on costs not volume consumed. The question is, can you purchase your beverages individually for a lower cost than that of the package. Something to consider.

OK, so for us we have a drink each in the bar. £11 say. We then have a bottle of wine with dinner - £18 say we drink the whole bottle at dinner. Sometimes we do, mainly we don't. We both also have a Costa Coffee. £6? That's £35. So just suppose we also have a speciality coffee after dinner. Very occasionally, we do that. that another £10 at a guess. That's £45. We've got a long way to go to get to £80 per day?

Surly it's going to raise the number of excessive drinkers onboard trying to get their money's worth which in turn changes the atmosphere?

It will be like the loud all inclusive benidorm style holidays any sensible person goes out of their way to avoid!!!

Not that i know anything as i'm still waiting to go on our first cruise in November so have others that have been on the other cruise lines that offer a package seen this to be the case?

We have found that the shorter the cruise the more revelry and the less discretion. Although that has applied to the first couple of days on a longer cruise but perhaps the resulting ill effect has something to do with the days of moderation that follow. But we have yet to experience anything that would put us off further cruising, with the exception of one particular line.

Guess we’ll just have to accept that some drink more than others?

I’ve never seen ‘rowdy’ behaviour on a cruise - when you’ve actually been on one you’ll see for yourself

I imagine everyone will have calculated this in advance of buying the package - it would be the first thing you do?

I have cruised 22 times with P&O and 20 times with Marella (Thompson) Marella have had all inclusive packages for many years and from next year it is included in the fare. I have seen as many drunks on my P&O cruises as I have on Marella. So drinks packages do not encourage drunkenness. What can encourage Benidorm like behaviour are large parties going on short cruises It can happen on long cruises, Auroras Sydney to Singapore segment was marred by a load mouthed drunk boarding at Brisbane who thought he could play blackjack. He made constant negative comments about other peoples play and security were called twice. Despite many complaints P&O did nothing about it. Why? because he was losing lots of money. Then there was the 'gentleman' who got drunk and racially insulted a young lady casino dealer, he was 'invited' to leave the ship next day, xmas eve. I was on that cruise but missed the incident. again P&O. Finally there was a recent incident gossiped about on Marella Explorer where a large family group got drunk on the first day and fisticuffs occurred. Next day was a sea day but the captain diverted to a port and threw the whole lot off. I hope they were billed for the extra fuel and port fees.

It is definitely a hiding to nowhere saying that you feel for you the drinks package will be a good thing. It doesn't matter how many times you outline the maths the majority of posts are all about alcohol and how that will be lowering the tone of P&O and everyone will be drunk trying to get good value for their package. So that must mean no-one, like me, will have an extra costa or 2, buy more water, not feel faint whenever the waiter brings me a large diet coke and I realise that I could have almost bought 2 litres for that at home. 15 alcoholic drinks a day - might do rarely but spend more than £39.50 on all that is included alcoholic and non-alcoholic yes in a heartbeat do it every cruise whether its a sea day or port day.

Do I care they may stop passengers bringing drink on board at embarkation? why the heck would anyone? The room service spirits are cheap, fat lot of good 1 litre of wine will do to bring major savings for a week long cruise let alone longer. Will P&O raise drink prices to make the package attractive? Well if you follow the majority of posters logic why would they because the whole shipload of passengers will then be half cut all day making the most of their "alcoholics anonymous" drinks package and recreating that poor maligned resort of Benidorm. Fuel costs will soar as the Captain will be always diverting to disembark drunken Family X or Y

If it isn't worth it for you don't buy it. If you feel it is make your purchase but please let those of us that do not to have to feel that we have to constantly be looking over our shoulder at disapproving fellow passengers who from previous posts it would appear are going to label us as, at best, as having a drink problem.

I don't think it involves more rowdiness, well don't think it would on Aurora or Arcadia. I have passed through Benidorm on a driving holiday. Horrendous. Everything based on the Brits. Fish and chips, steak and kidney pies and beer. It was really horrible. Mind you that was many moons ago.

We had all inclusive drinks on a Fred cruise as part of the fare. That was fine. I wonder if they will incorporate it as part of the fare instead of buying a package.

I’m smiling because that’s exactly what people say about P&O!

Precisely and who knows what will happen when that dastardly drinks package gets rolled out to Arcadia and Aurora next week? How many will succumb? Because if they do then they had better watch their fellow passengers attitude. They will need to start getting to it early doors to get those 15 alcoholic drinks down them that is seen as the only reason for having the package. By late afternoon things may well start kicking up a notch or two as heads swim, tempers flare, let the fighting commence. Oh and best get funds in place just in case of emergency disembarkation

Or will some give it considered thought, see more options all round, opportunities for trying a mocktail or cocktail, having an extra glass of wine and just try it, generally going about their usual holiday pattern.
