DeeGoofyNY Posted January 21, 2006 #128 Share Posted January 21, 2006 We returned from the 1/8 sailing onboard the Spirit. Being my first cruise it did give me an uneasy feeling, like if I was in the cabin that the windows blew out I may have had a slight heart attack! My biggest fear was my mom was in a wheelchair so you immediately think of her safety and ability to manuever, if our cabin was flooded. The flooded cabins were around the corner from us on the fifth floor mid ship. We spoke with one of the passengers whose cabin was flooded, her window did not blow out however. The water was knee deep, with the water coming out of the ceiling walls and under the door. We met her about 15-30 minutes after it occured so whe was still a bit shaken but not petrified, her biggest concern was her luggage was soaked. It was a bit frightening to step off the elevator and feel a "strong breeze" and see the entire floor covered with towels. The crew was a little flustered, at the start as we saw the hotel manager personally wheeling luggage down the halls and trying to reach crew staff on her radio to assist her. We took a few pictures of the hallway that evening, and some of the cabins before we disemarked the ship in NY, I will post them for anyone interested in seeing them. As far as when it occured my understanding was we were near Virginia at the time. And ironically the night prior they forcasted 31 degrees for the next morning and we woke to 71 degree weather with the pool filled and were able to enjoy a good 4 hours poolside in the sun before the weather changed after 1:30pm. All in all the biggest thing was the sound of the ship creaking as if it was going to bust at the seams. My mom has sailed about 10 times, through hurricanes and what not and that made her a little uneasy, as she never heard that before. I didn't take a dramamine until that evening and was fine. I did hear alot of passengers were cabin bound due to seasickness as well as many crew members. The captain did give continued updats thruoghout the night and some people actually had no idea what went on. As far as the Garden Room , the second main dining room, the windows blew out before they opened for dinner. I did not hear af any crew injuries from it. The dining room never opened again after the damage though. Here are a few pictures. Take Care Dee
CB750A Posted January 21, 2006 #129 Share Posted January 21, 2006 Does anyone know if any of the AFT Suites were damaged ? Thanks
seahorse Posted January 21, 2006 #130 Share Posted January 21, 2006 I would think that it would be very difficult to damage the aft cabins. You would have to "back into" the wave;) ..........I could be wrong.
sclauss Posted January 21, 2006 #131 Share Posted January 21, 2006 I've worn the patch for 3 subsequent cruises since I had the mdds incident and have not had a recurrence. I won't be cruising without a patch until I hit my 50's!!! Sharon
Seago2 Posted January 21, 2006 #132 Share Posted January 21, 2006 WOW DeeGoofy! Sounds like an up and down trip. I know what you mean about the creaking- I remember it well from my springtime cruise last year. It was LOUD. Thanks for the pictures. That's what makes this site great... people getting to their computers asap and telling their stories and posting what they got. We would NEVER have seen the inside of the staterooms otherwise. Pattymelt Posted January 21, 2006 #133 Share Posted January 21, 2006 I dont know about the aft suites but we were in the very front and we did have some damage bu not from water. The TV flew out of the stand and broke the table. One other day we had bad waves, we were on level 10 and when the waves came up we could see hem coming up over the bow of the ship that was scarier to me than the other storm. The sound of the waves hitting the ship was very loud and eery I must say I did not get much sleep that night although my husband slept right through it. Still had a good time though :)
Aimarg Posted January 22, 2006 #134 Share Posted January 22, 2006 Hi, Dee. We were on the same cruise and had a wonderful time on a lovely ship, even with the rough seas! The weather certainly turned quickly - were you at the poolside as the crew frantically started to drain the pool? Many of us got drenched by the waves but everyone seemed to take it in good spirits. We were impressed with the speedy and professional handling of the later situation by the crew and, although we did see some apprehensive passengers, we saw no panic and concur with your summation. From our cabin - 9500 (first cabin port side) - we certainly felt the tremendous pitching at the bow. We also had waves covering our balcony and water seeping through the siding door, but towels took care of the problem and we continued to enjoy the amenities that remained open. We never felt in any serious danger and actually found it to be quite an interesting, although hopefully a once-in-a-lifetime, experience. Hope you had a great vacation. If you have more photos, would you be able to post them for us? Marg

mbisson Posted January 22, 2006 #136 Share Posted January 22, 2006 I've heard Alaska has the roughest seas anytime of ] This was not our experience on the Spirit to Alaska - and from what I have heard from repeat cruisers, it is actually one of the smoothest cruises - on the Inside Passage that is.:) Actually, when the wind is blowing the passage almost becomes a funnel in places, and the narrow part of the funnel can get awfully bumpy! I've missed Skagway in the past because of this. But generally speaking the passage is smooth. -Monte
mbisson Posted January 22, 2006 #137 Share Posted January 22, 2006 I was on the 12/29 sailing and all though rough going down we DID NOT have 30 foot waves. At times the swells were 18-20 feet per bridge report. Love it! Ya gotta remember how things "grow" with the passage of time. Wasn't the rogue wave over 200'? ;) -Monte
dongordon Posted January 22, 2006 #138 Share Posted January 22, 2006 We are booked on one of the deluxe suites on the Spirit and were wondering about your opinion about them. I believe there are 5 forward deluxe suites. Are they all the same or are the two on the end better or worse than the three middle suites that face the bow of the ship? Pattymelt Posted January 22, 2006 #139 Share Posted January 22, 2006 we were in 10001 which was really nice cabin, we looked into the one next to us and it did seem a little bigger and they had a balcony on the front and also one on the side. We really enjoyed the cruise even wih the weather, actually it got quite humerous after a while trying to walk straight I found the faster you go the easier it was. We are looking into a cruise for next Jan so the seas did not deter us. Hope you have a good time
foilman2002 Posted January 22, 2006 #140 Share Posted January 22, 2006 Dee, Wonder how much the news desks would have paid for your still shots and my video of the cleaning operation? I saw a flash going off at the other end of the hallway, I guess that was you. If not, someone else has some shots too. We came downstairs from the Crew Talent Show, and as soon as we stepped out we felt that breeze, and then I saw the ship's personnel. I looked at my video tape and you can see pants legs flapping from the wind. I personally saw one of the crew members being escorted away from the damaged rooms with an injured arm. It seems to have happened when the second wave hit the ship and water rushed through one of the windows he was trying to repair. I didn't hear of any other injuries. I must have seen the same woman you saw, she was upset about all of her belongings, but not frantic, nor did she look wet. We spoke to someone who said they ate in Garden at 8:00 Wednesday night, and others said they ate in the dining room while repairs were going on. We couldn't get in at 8:30, the doors were closed, so I don't know how they did. I too agree with your assessment of the situation and with Marg's description of the demeanor of the crew. I never felt in danger, never felt "out of touch", nor did I witness any "heavy handed" handling of the passengers. I was surprised that no one asked me not to videotape or take pictures, that was not their concern, helping the passengers and cleaning up was. Check your mail, I sent you the sunset photos I said I would. Larry
DeeGoofyNY Posted January 22, 2006 #141 Share Posted January 22, 2006 What a Small World..Hi Larry! Yes I received the sunsets and the monkey, good spotting him, I would have never noticed him in that first photo if we were driving along. Thank your wife for taking my email. Under your direction my sunset didn't come out half bad either...lol We were also at the crew show and must have come off the elevator the nearly the same time. The only other people I saw from that section were the young mother with her two children, she didn't look too troubled either, it appeared she wasn't in her cabin when it happened luckily, that would be scarey with the little ones. As far as the Garden room we were heading there when it was due to open and she sent us to Windows along with everyone on line, I guess it could have opened, but I passed there later to see if I can see the repairs and the doors were shut so who knows? Nervous laughter was the most I saw and I am guessing those that got sea sick had the worst of it. Be Well and thanks again. Take Care Dee
DeeGoofyNY Posted January 22, 2006 #142 Share Posted January 22, 2006 HIiMarg, It was a cruise to remember, as you said interesting but I could go with no repeat of it. I agree that the crew handled it very well, and from talking to some, it was their first time aboard with that kind of damage. I do have more photos but I haven't taken them off my card yet. I dropped my camera (my husbands camera actually, who wasn't with us, he is thrilled!) the last night and it is not working, those pictures I took were with my cousins camera. I have sea lag, I can't believe I am so tired, today is the first day I think I am back to normal. We were at the pool when the net came out, but not close enough to get splashed. While we were in, it started to get wavey, my cousin asked if it was a wave pool...lol Once I get my card read I will post the few additional ones I have. Hflors Posted January 22, 2006 #143 Share Posted January 22, 2006 Hubby and I are to be on this ship next Jan celebrating our 35th ann. I told him about what happened and he seriously asked me if maybe we should go on another ship? I laughed at him! And said "ARE YOU KIDDING? Who cares if one night of the cruise is rough that could happen anywhere? I think he realized what he said and then agreed that one of the reasons for booking this cruise was to be able to cruise out of NY. I don't think he thought how silly is sounded that he wanted to cancel a cruise just because of one wave a year ahead of time until I answered him. Got to love my sweet hubby! 34 years of marriage and counting to our cruise next Jan 2, 07 for the big 35!!!

electricron Posted January 23, 2006 #146 Share Posted January 23, 2006 Flounders said Cunard feels its refund offer is fair and that many passengers have accepted it. "Cunard takes the view that they are on board, they're enjoying all the facilities of the QM2, all the food, the entertainment and so on, so while we very much regret they're missing the ports, we feel the 50 percent compensates for that," he said.
