RAS4331 Posted August 31, 2019 #1 Share Posted August 31, 2019 We'll be sailing to the Caribbean on the Zuiderdam (Holland America). We are first-time cruisers. My husband HATES wearing a tie. If he wears a nice collared shirt and sport coat, will this be acceptable for formal night or the upscale restaurants, or will he be rejected without a tie? Rare ontheweb Posted August 31, 2019 #4 Share Posted August 31, 2019 Definitely do not need the tie. I'm not sure that he even needs the jacket as it is now a Gala night not a Formal night.
lenquixote66 Posted August 31, 2019 #5 Share Posted August 31, 2019 HAL had a dress night until 2015.I had to wear a tie every day when I was working.I do not miss it.I have not worn one on a cruise in 4 years. Enjoy the Zuiderdam.
RAS4331 Posted September 1, 2019 Author #6 Share Posted September 1, 2019 Good to know he won't be thrown overboard for being under-dressed. 🙂 Thank you all.

Gala Nights for men are slacks (not jeans) and a collared shirt. You will see some Tux and some jackets and ties but in the Caribbean you will see about 50% in slacks (Think Dockers) and a collared shirt.
sppunk Posted September 1, 2019 #8 Share Posted September 1, 2019 No tie necessary. He can not carry the jacket either. It’s not necessary.
