Izzywiz Posted April 15, 2021 #979 Share Posted April 15, 2021 Lovely to have you back on board Bee-ass and great pictures of the Muscat area. We haven't done the boat trip but it is on our 'to do' list. After our time in Oman we are journeying to the Red Sea ports of Safaga, Sharm El-Sheikh and Aquaba tomorrow. Muscat...
Izzywiz Posted April 15, 2021 #980 Share Posted April 15, 2021 We heard a lot of complaints from passengers about the stop in Salalah. People said that the port was very industrial and a long way from the town (true) and that there isn't much to see in the town...also true although the beach is gorgeous. We like to get away from towns and had a wonderful trip to the coast and then up into the mountains to visit Job's Tomb. The Marneef caves and Blow hole...

Aulanis Posted April 15, 2021 #983 Share Posted April 15, 2021 (edited) Our walk from ship to Khasab - would have helped if we had not followed what we thought were road signs. They were but only pointed to hotel complex which is unfortunately in opposite direction to the town. Did not matter and we gave up after a while and went in the right direction but never reached Khasab No big deal we had been before and there is IIRC only a bakery , a post office and a small shop. What was interesting was the fleet of small boats going past our ship back & forth- never found out where they were going or what they were carrying. We nearly didnt go the "gate" had a handwritten note on saying closed. As it was not across the path we decided to go up and see if we could get in, hoping it wasnt a wasted climb. I did suggest to DW that she could go up and give me a wave if it was open LOL . There is an office , other side of a car park but we didnt see it until we came back down -didnt seem to be anyone about though. Izzywiz Posted April 16, 2021 #988 Share Posted April 16, 2021 Hi fellow cruisers and welcome to the Red Sea. I'm not sure where in the world the Bungle66 picture shows but it looks very pretty. Tomorrow we transit the Suez Canal as we head back to Europe. I'm starting today's Red Sea journey with pictures of the security guards boarding the ship before we sailed through the 'pirate waters' around the Horn of Africa,,, We visited Safaga in 2010 in our adventurous days and did the desert quad biking... before heading into the town,...

Izzywiz Posted April 16, 2021 #998 Share Posted April 16, 2021 Hi Ardennais, thanks for asking although that is a tricky one and difficult to put in order but here goes...Petra, Machu Picchu, Iguazu Falls, Angkor Wat and The Terracotta Army closely followed by the Registan in Samarkand, the rock churches in Lalibela, Ethiopia, The temples in Bagan, Myanmar, the ice fields in Greenland and the view from the top of Table mountain plus many, many more. I’ve loved everywhere that we have visited in this wonderful world and really hope that we can keep healthy enough during our twilight years to see even more 😄

Izzywiz Posted April 16, 2021 #1000 Share Posted April 16, 2021 I think I got my passion for travel from my Dad who back-packed all over Europe before the war and who read stories of distant places to me from a young age. Dad spoke several languages with a fair amount of fluency (I was hopeless!) and he was always keen to take me abroad. We went to Loretta de Mar for my first foreign trip when I was 9 in 1957 and that really sparked my love of different cultures. I studied geography and history at college and that fed the flames even more. I’m extremely lucky that my dear husband enjoys travelling as much as I do. When our son was young and we did family holidays to the 'costas', we always hired a car and explored the off the beaten track areas. I remember our son grumbling about having to visit “another pile of old stones” on one of our many (he said “interminable”) visits to the local historical and cultural sights. cruising since 1992 has given us the opportunity to visit fabulous places and we also do land tours but, unfortunately, age is catching up with us so we are trying to do as much as possible in the years that we have left. We have been so lucky in our lives.
