Pictures taken between Monday, November 1 and Sunday, November 7.

Fall activities demand more photographs!

Rules: See above

That's it. This isn't a contest.

All photos taken this week are welcome (not just cruising).

Prizes will not be awarded. Discovering the joy of photography is the prize.

The idea is to get folks out using their cameras for more than vacations and toddler birthdays.

Post one. Post many. Up to you.

Have fun with your camera and share your fun with others!

Now, there's something you don't see every fall day...in California. With the exception of a brief exile to Georgia, I have lived in the same area since birth. It is a semi-arid region where the awareness of Fall requires a calendar or a visit to a major retailer where the Christmas merchandise starts appearing at the end of September. While not common, there are some trees in our well-irrigated desert biome that reluctantly grunt out a few yellow leaves, but our fall colors tend to be mostly green and brown. We found this proud declaration of Fall’s arrival thanks to an hour‘s drive and a 3500’ rise in elevation that put us smack in the middle of an actual Fall season where apples grow, roads are narrow, snow can happen and the air smells like air.

Well we're getting to my favorite time of year for wildlife shooting in Florida...WINTER!  Many things to like about it - for one, it's a little cooler (we don't get 'winter' but the temps drop into the low 80s or mid-70s and humidity falls way down, so it's much more tolerable)...for another, many more species come down here to spend the winter so there's more to see and shoot.  And once the clocks roll back an hour, sunset comes sooner which is perfect for someone who has weekend afternoons to shoot and still wants to get home in time for dinner or going out.

This weekend, I popped out to the wetlands both Saturday and Sunday, as we had a nice cool front pass through that left us with sunny skies and temps int he low 70s both afternoons...and the birds and animals seemed to be much more active in the cooler air...

Female red-winged blackbird has a completely different look, but is quite lovely in the sun:

That same gorgeous light was showing off this tricolored heron in flight:

A rare sighting in my local wetlands, this northern harrier circled by to see if there was anything to hunt:

Even the lowly common American coot looks quite fetching when the late afternoon light hits him just right:

The petite pied-billed grebe always looks lovely, but even moreso in late winter afternoon light:
