Hi- we are booked and paid for on France's Finest starting june16th. We are told 

we got the last room on each ship.  Our sales agent at Viking also said there are no promotions

that might now get us a discount, beverage package etc for this departure. But he also 

tells me to keep checking for promos. 

 

Does anyone know of any promos that might work? We've only been on 

one prior Viking trip so not sure about how things work.

It’s closer to the front elevators which tend to be less busy and they take you to the area in front of the theater where you assemble for most of the excursions. It’s a lot less walking.

 

Midship has less motion so it’s better if you encounter rough seas.

This is a really great deal on the Patagonian fjords cruises from Santiago to Ushuaia. We sailed on the Octantis last October and it’s one of the most enjoyable scenic cruises we’ve ever been on. If you’re thinking about experiencing an Expedition ship and fear Antarctica is a bit too much, this is the cruise for you. Seeing several glaciers up close and watching the calving was incredible.

We have done the Antarctica cruise and fell in love with Expedition ships but their costs are usually so high.  This cruise seems to be a bit more inline.  We have done the SA onthe Jupiter between Santiago to Buenos Aires,  we really enjoyed that too.  I am intriqued to be able to get closer to some of the glaciers and poke into the smaller inlets.  From trying to look at the itinerary I can not tell how often the "toys" can be deployed and used as the xcursions for the day.  Can you help with that questions....fearful to just ask Viking rep as they often don't have the right information available to them.  Thanks,

There's an expedition thread, and people there will be more than happy to answer your questions. Odds are, everything you would ever want to know or never thought you'd ask has been answered there.

 

That being said, I concur.... I've done two itineraries on the expedition ships. The design of the ships is fantastic, but 400 pax is too much for me, and I don't know the repeatability of the way Viking does excursions would meet my needs down the road specifically for expedition cruise tours.

The “toys” were deployed a number of times. It is highly weather dependent, not so much because of rain but because of the wind speed creating swells. Above a certain number of knots they cannot deploy. If necessary the captain may redeploy the ship to more favorable areas to launch the toys. They do their best to give you the expedition experience. 
 

We were able to do two zodiac rides, including a landing near a glacial where we then hiked about a 1/2 mile to get closer, and two Special Operations Boat rides in the fjords (that was a blast, see video in my thread). We could have also done kayaking (too demanding) and taken a sub ride (too costly for our taste).

 

Remember that unlike Antarctica there are also ports to call on so it wasn’t like we hap to depend only on the “toys” for our daily activities. 
 

One other thing. The ship has a Chilean pilot for all of the sailing up until Port Williams. This allowed us to pass extremely close to Cape Horn, closer than an ocean cruise. Because of the pilot, we also took some detours in the fjords to see additional ice fields and scenery. Unlike on the Jupiter, you’ll spend most of the time scenic cruising and exploring the fjords in awe.

The Chilean fjords are repositioning cruises so they tend to not sail at capacity. On our cruise the travel consultant said there were 320 passengers on board, including 40 on the Longitudinal World Cruise. There are also 250 crew. She mentioned she had a friend on competing expedition ship that had 500 pax with only 150 crew and wondered how they cope.

free air is nice but last time we did FREE it was not very good connections or our choice of airline even with the Air Plus the up charges were very high!

I always look at the fare without the offer code.  Sometimes there’s a big difference and sometimes not that much.  I personally don’t like free air because I like to control my own airfare.  I will also compare Viking’s airfare upgrade options to what I can book on my own to see if it is a good deal or not.  On our last cruise, we upgraded to Viking’s premium economy but had to pay air deviation ($100 each,) air plus ($150 each,) AND $110 air differential each to get the nonstop flight I wanted.  With all the add ons, Viking’s price save us about $200 total.

 

On our next cruise, we used an offer code that had free air and free Silver Spirits.  We just don’t want to do economy any more, so we looked at the air upgrade costs.  Viking’s business fare was the same as what I could book on my own (before all the extra fees,) so I’m booking my own airfare with great connections, etc.. 😊

A November ‘24 West Indies Explorer sailing with free air is $4,699 pp (PV2, the lowest PV for which I can select a stateroom). A November ‘25 sailing in the same category (though PV3 is available for self select stateroom) on the same ship (Sea) is $4,399 pp (after $500 off for current sale) but the economy air is $999 pp. Total cruise with air is $9,398 in ‘24 compared to $10,796 in ‘25.

 

I prefer the cruise only fares discount to the included free air pricing approach (if it’s free the consumer is the product 🧐) as we fly business/first and want greater flexibility choosing flights, though foregoing included transfers adds costs.
