As Usual Carnival Is Behind The Times.....Royal Debuts Biodegradable Straws

Maybe they should be prohibited since because they don’t provide them, they are not expecting them in the trash. Then when yours show up, they get missed, adding to the problem. They have a very good reason for not providing them but self important people bring their own—or do you take them home with you to dispose.

Agree!  If you don't like the edible ones, then bring stainless or silicone.  If you bring your own plastic ones, then you shouldn't be throwing them in the trash with everything else because that is the real issue.

Actually the real issue wasn’t that the straws were mixed in with regular trash it was because they were being mixed in with food waste and dumped into the ocean. If you bring a plastic straw and throw it away in your cabin it will not be dumped into the ocean. During the period this became an issue for Carnival there were pictures circulating showing the lack of separation from food waste. This resulted in a hefty fine for Carnival and the changes from disposable straws, stirs, wooden coffee sticks, individual butter wrapped in foil, drink umbrellas are just some of the obvious items that I can recall.  So please if you plan on bringing disposable plastic straws toss them in your stateroom trash and not in a dining venue or on the lido deck.

This is true only if you disregard the 800 lb gorilla in the environmental room called methane slip.  [..incredibly informative post from ChEngKP follows...]

Someone stated in a different online venue that LNG-fueled ships also have to use 10% diesel as some sort of "spark plug."   Any truth to that?  It sounded, if you'll pardon the pun, a bit fishy.

It's really about 5%, but that's correct.  The "auto-ignition" temperature (the temperature where the fuel will self-ignite, and for a diesel, the temperature that the compressed air in the cylinder has to reach for ignition) for methane is 1000*F.  The same auto-ignition temp for diesel fuel is 410*F.  It would be virtually impossible to compress enough air to reach 1000*F (and have a usable amount of area for energy conversion), so a little diesel is injected with the methane to "start the ball rolling".  Once the diesel ignites, the flame will spread to the methane.  LNG powered vehicles on land utilize a spark plug instead of the diesel injection.

On my Royal cruise to Alaska last week, I received a paper straw in my fruity drink. So they are still also using paper, at least on some ships.

Must not have gotten the memo. Maybe the pigeon was blown off course?
