Just booked on the Sky

Just booked an anniversary cruise on the Sky for June 2023. We know it’s an older ship but are fine with that as we plan on relaxing. Only one port we have not been to so plan on staying on the ship most of the time. Any info on amount of kids would be on the ship? I know it’s June but it doesn’t have a lot of bells and whistles for the kids. Anyone been on one recently and has info?
Also, any other info would be appreciated

I was on the Sky a couple weeks ago.  Mine was a weekend cruise to Nassau (GSC was cancelled due to rough seas.)  I'll try to separate the weekend cruise experience from the Sky experience.

A previous experience on RCI as well as this one has shown me that weekend "Booze Cruises" draw a clientele whom you wouldn't generally find on a longer sailing.  I don't necessarily mean that in a good way 🙂  I kind of knew that going in but had a good deal, an expiring airline credit, and would have been 1 point short of Sapphire after my October cruise.  This got me 3 points.  So there's that.

However, the ship was my least favorite of the 8 ships I've been on, a few more than once:

  • It's among the oldest ships in the fleet (20+ years.)  Fewer amenities than people would expect on the newer offerings.
  • There were fewer specialty restaurants (and Le Bistro was in a really odd location.)  The food at Cagney's and Le Bistro was very good as was the service.
  • The buffet was the buffet.  It tended to be crowded at breakfast but otherwise OK.  I didn't eat at MDR.  Pizza at La Cucina on embarkation day was good, not great.
  • There were fewer bars than on the larger ships and most were hopping.  It was sometimes difficult to get service.  I tend to like something a bit more sedate.
  • Casino was small and smoky.
  • On my sailing, there were a fair number of kids because it was a budget cruise and it was the weekend.  I'd expect you'll see a lot of kids given that school is out, especially if your sailing is one of the lower price points.

Everyone's tastes are different but I would probably pass if given the chance to sail on the Sky again.

We’re there a good number of kids on your cruise? Ours is a ten day and not one of the shorter ones. It’s beginning of June so not all schools are out as of that time (at least when I went to school☺️)

There were a mix of families and young groups (weddings/bachelorette parties etc.)  Of course, the demographic of a 10 day is going to be a lot different than a booze cruise 🙂

My husband and I will be on the Sky for a 7 night cruise next month. Let me know what specific info you want and I will try to locate.

@undecided1Thanks for that. We are just looking to relax. If can let us know how the pool area is. The Mdr’s. Probably going to do our free specialty dinner at teppanyki, so if dine there how was it. General shape of the ship and the demographics. Thanks in advance

We just got off of a 5 day on the Sky this morning and there were very few kids on our sailing. There is literally nothing for kids to do onboard, aside from a kind of sad looking kids club and arcade. No slides or cool putting green. We actually felt kind of bad for the handful of kids we did see, they must have been so upset when we docked next to the Disney ship in Cozumel. The slide looks amazing!

Does the Sky have a Teppanyaki? It isn't on the website.

Well then I quest we will pick another place for our free at sea dinner😉

Le Bistro (deck 5 mid/aft, starboard), Cagney's, and the Pinnacle Lounge and Sushi Bar (both on deck 12 AFT) are the specialty restaurants on the SKY!

I am holding a stateroom for June 8 sailing and plan to book on Tuesday. We too will be celebrating a big anniversary. I just wanted a small ship and an itinerary with access to beach time.

We did a sky trip labor day weekend in 2019 and it was a very full ship with NCL selling cabins for $50 a night last minute. There were some small children and teenagers but I wasn't bothered by them. Only one screaming incident that I recall and the mom handled it well. They did have the children's programs in full swing (pre-pandemic), I remember a group of small ones being led through the 2nd level of the atrium once singing it was brief and cute not disruptive.

The Spinnaker is the observation lounge and it was always peaceful there during the day. Spinnaker and our balcony were our escape when the ship felt crowded.

I was on Sky this past March for a 3 night run to Key West and Nassau.  NCL did a nice job with the refurb on this ship, however with that said it is an old ship and lacks the bells and whistles of the newer Breakaway class vessels.  The pool area is small and pretty sad, didn't use it at all during our trip.  Service was great as it is on all NCL ships.  Le Bistro was excellent, we ate there two out of the 3 nights.  Casino was so smoky that I only played for about an hour the entire weekend.  On the newer ships with the sealed off smoking area I normally play for a lot longer than this.
