The best tour we've ever taken was this one with Paul McNeil....Just amazing.

Contact him quickly as his tours have been known to sell out.

Opt for the Titanic tour not the Peggy's Cove...you'll be so glad you did.

We have always done Halifax on our own, and have never been disappointed.  The boardwalk, right at the ship, goes along the waterfront, and leads to eateries, breweries, Maritime Museum, and more.  If you care to walk uphill, you can find old cemeteries, botanic gardens, the Citadel. Lots to do, right there.

we did a walking tour..."Historic Halifax by Foot"  by TayMac tours...   We were pleased it was a great tour.

Just want to put in a second thumbs-up for TayMac Tours.  Great pace, great information, and it left us with time for a delicious lunch, walk along the boardwalk for ice cream and beer.  FYI  if you're on a cruise stop it might be helpful to note that the Public Library (that looks like a big stack of books) has free WiFi and restrooms.

Halifax is a pretty easy city to walk around to hit up all the main sites (within the city), as long as you can do hills.

We were there last September and got a taxi up to the citadel to start with.  Spent a while there as we found the costumed guides very good.  Then walked downhill in a slightly roundabout route, stopping for a drink and snack, and ended the day in the immigration museum followed by a good bar by the cruise terminal.

Worked very well and the only hill walking we did was down.  Cannot remember the cost, if the taxi, but not much for the short run one way and no problems finding it as we left the terminal.

We are due back there in late July this year and think I had heard there was a gardens and Cathedral worth seeing, so we are thinking of just heading to those then spending more time on the board walk area.  Would be interested if there are any other must do's in the City as we are unlikely to  return after that as both cruises were/are long round trips from the UK if about one month in length, going in different directions.

We very much appreciated help we got from this board.

The Halifax Public Gardens are absolutely beautiful and well worth a visit (assuming the weather cooperates).  They are back up the hill, not that far from the Citadel.  Do what you did before, take a cab up the hill.  Saves time apart from everything else.

I suspect your reference to the Cathedral is to St. Mary's Cathedral Basilica.  It's Gothic Revival architecture, which I always find interesting (and did when we visited).  If you look at a map, it's downhill from the Public Gardens, so you could start at the Gardens, walk down to the Basilica, and then walk down to the waterfront.

A "must do" for us along the waterfront is to have some BeaverTails.  Yum!  (They are located at 1549 Lower Water Street, about midway along the boardwalk in a cluster of other food shacks.)

If it's pouring rain that day and you're looking for something indoors that you haven't already visited, there's the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. We haven't been there yet, so I can't give a personal recommendation.

I hope this was helpful.  Enjoy your trip!

Thanks a lot.  That has just made me start a folder on Favorites to save down links, so added these.  I have already looked at your links on the net and Google Earth - they are very useful,  It is always particularly good to have something to do if the day is a washout 🙂

Halifax is our most southerly point this summer, so hoping for some good weather.  Other stops are three in Newfoundland, Red Bay in Labrador and then north for scenic cruising near the entrance to Hudson Bay, followed by three ports in Greenland and one in Iceland after that.  So very weather dependant altogether.
