Woohoo! Looks like the duct tape and zip ties held. Radiance is backing in to the east berth at Canada Place cruise terminal.

Ditto!  See you soon @Cruisefanatic71 as we also step onboard on the 17th.  For all of the weeks/months of planning and anticipation, it is hard to believe that the time is almost here.

Royal Caribbean’s Radiance of the Seas has had a rocky start to this year’s Alaska cruise season. Propulsion issues already forced the popular cruise line to cancel its 7-night Alaska cruise scheduled for April 26, 2024, and now the subsequent sailing, embarking on May 3, 2024, has gotten an unexpected itinerary change.

Instead of calling on Skagway, Alaska, the originally planned port for May 8, the Radiance-class vessel will visit Haines, Alaska. The rest of the itinerary is thus far unaffected and future cruises, which generally all follow the same itinerary, are still scheduled to call on Skagway.  "

So is Haines not on the regular NB itinerary? On our SB in June, we are supposed to go to Skagway from 7AM to 5PM and then stop in Haines from 7PM to 11PM.

Skagway has dock availability issues right now. That's why it was canceled.

Hopefully it's a one-off, would hate to miss Skagway, it's one of the more scenic ports.

They're hoping to get the new dock up and running soon. It was supposed to be done over the winter but the replacement dock had all sorts of issues.

Agreed.  Though it still has its tourist shops, etc (after all, they DO need to make money) Skagway has a more laid back atmosphere.  We also prefer because hiking trails can be found close in to port.

I first visited about 30 years ago, arriving on the Alaska Marine Highway Ferry, staying overnight and taking the train and coach to Whitehorse the next morning.

Of course, back then there were a lot less and much smaller cruise ships visiting and once they left, we had the town almost to ourselves. Must be quite a different experience today. 🙂

She‘s near Prince Rupert right now and sailing at a decent speed of 20 knots. So it seems that the Azipods are fine now. At the current speed, they arrive in Juneau approximately 45 min. late, but they still have 12 hours to catch up and maybe they crank up the speed a bit later.

The Syemour Narrows between Vancouver Island and the Mainland are a bit of interesting water. The tide is often too strong for cruise ships to transit, so they need to wait till slack tide, which of course is ever-changing. So sometimes they rush out of Vancouver at full speed to make it to the Narrows in time, other times they have a leisurely sail out of Vancouver and then have the pedal to the metal afterward to make it to Juneau in time. Looks like Radiance had a fairly relaxing sail up to the narrows and is now full speed ahead!

  • Host Kat changed the title to On Radiance ... all ports cancelled due to issues with propulsion system

Just completed the May 3rd northbound.  All seems well onboard. (Doing a total B-4-B)

We've been told the Skagway dock is now completed and all future stops will be made as planned.

Just received an update. We're expected to Tender into Skagway this week. It wouldn't be a big deal but my wife is a full-time wheelchair user.   No tenders for us.

Had to cancel our White Pass Train trip  .. .

Thank you for the update @STEVE-O.  I am happy to hear that Skagway hasn't been cancelled altogether, but sorry that you and your DW will have to miss it.

Crossing our fingers that Skagway (tendered or not) is still "a go" for the May 17 sailing of Radiance.  The White Pass excursion is one that we are most looking forward to.

Thank you again and hoping that the rest of your trip goes as planned.  Have a great cruise!
