Diamond Princess Cabin D-741

I realize this is a very old post but hope you will see this reply because your post became very helpful to me this past summer. It has taken me this long to reply because I only realized which site I found this on last month. I surprised my husband with his dream cruise this past July, 2011 - a ten day cruise through Alaska (land and sea). We are avid cruisers and cruise after cruise I upgraded my rooms to where I will only stay in suites now, yes I'm a brat. I also try to get aft cabins only. This was our first time on Princess and we were beyond excited when we walked into C755 (aft) on the Diamond Princess in Vancouver BC. The room was the largest suite we had ever stayed in. I was disappointed however because as we walked the long hall we saw all the birthday and anniversary signs and balloons and being my husbands 50th birthday he said am I getting that. Well, he should of because I ordered that and wine both of which were never arranged. The room butler was quick to remedy however.

Anyway, we were truly enjoying our first day, the balcony was enormous, we were able to enter the room at 12 PM. I told my husband we would have breakfast served on the balcony and dinners when we scenic cruised through the glaciers. I’m not a fan of mobs so I prefer to have my quiet balcony for pictures. On departure we were enjoying a bottle of wine out on the beautiful teak loungers when I caught the first whiff of garbage. I said ‘wow, we must be passing a garbage dump’. It got so bad I had to stick a flower under my nose to stay out there. I thought once we were out to sea I wouldn’t smell it any longer, ha. The next morning I went out to see the scenery and was smacked with that horrible smell again. This time I said there is a problem, this is no garbage dump, this is the ship. I called the front desk and reported the problem. They said they would send up the ‘ventilation specialist’?? OK, we waited, he came quickly, I opened the door and he had on a tool belt?? I said, you will not fix a smell with a tool belt. I took him outside and he said he cannot smell it??? I said are you serious? He said he would send in someone else because he didn’t smell anything. Now the room butler comes in, I said ‘oh, I wasn’t expecting you’. He said when there is a problem in his rooms he always comes to check it out. I took him out side, now mind you the minute you open the door you get smacked in the face with the foulest smell you can imagine! He said he didn’t smell anything and would call the Manager for me.

I sailed for a month in aft cabins C 753/C 748 on the Diamond two years ago and never smelled a thing. I sailed for a month this Oct/Nov in aft cabin C 748 on the Sapphire (twin of the Diamond) and only smelled steaks frying on the grill just one night. I did smell tobacco smoke from the next door suite on my aft balcony on those cruises.

I'm reviving this old thread to see if anyone has any CURRENT experiences with D741 on the Sapphire. I had to opportunity to choose this cabin for a future cruise, but I'm very hesitant to do so. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Lana,

We will be next door to D741 on our Hawaii cruise - maybe we can "sneek a peek?";)

I am going out on the Sapphire on Dec. 29 to Hawaii. I am either going to be the happiest camper on the face of the earth for 14 days, OR ........

I will get photos and post back after Jan. 12. I have read many reviews on this category cabin and just decided to "go with it" in the hopes views are stunning.

Just off the Diamond Princess D739 aft suite for 3. We could have booked a regular cabin on a more luxurious cruise line for what we paid but we were excited about having a large balcony on an Alaska cruise. Imagine our disappointment when we opened the balcony door to the horrendous stench of garbage. We were still in port and thought it was from a port facility but the smell never went away. When we first expressed concern on board an"engineer" was sent. All he did was walk in, open the balcony door and leave. A note was later delivered that said the problem was solved. The front desk acted like they never heard this complaint before but they finally gave us a sizable OBC. My feeling was that just like a visible obstruction, the problem should be disclosed before charging a premium for an aft suite. We were never able to use the balcony. Will never sail Princess again.

Oh dear!

We have this cabin booked for a 2015 Australia cruise.

Sadly, we may have to rethink this cruise.

Thanks for the heads up.

I will be writing a more extensive review soon. It was an okay cruise otherwise but Alaska is spectacular and a cruise is a good way to see it. I am still on the land tour portion. I would not book with Princess again because they did not disclose this on-going issue, have not corrected the problem and because of the way it was handled. We did not feel the OBC was adequate and we didn't like how they seemed to be in denial. Unfortunately there were no other suites available to move to.

Emairs, if you are otherwise a Princess fan you should just book a suite that is not on or near the aft and you should be fine.

Not being at the aft is a deal breaker for us, so will probably have to cancel this cruise.

Thanks for your input. I would be fine with the obstruction, which the website mentions, but I would be very unhappy with the odour.

The obstruction is not a factor at all. I usually love aft cabins, too but for a good itinerary it isn't a must, though could have been nice with so much beautiful scenery n AK. This was a nice sized suite and though still pricey it was a bargain compared to Regent and Seabourn. I guess you get what you pay for but I didn't expect a garbage stench!
