Why do people get drunk on a cruise?

Let me start by saying that I'm not a big drinker. I like to drink wine with dinner, have a margarita with co-workers after a bad week at work, etc. I guess they get drunk because it is vacation and they want to let go and have a good time. I don't really think there is anything wrong with that idea. Especially on a cruise ship. They don't have to drive anywhere!!! There are some who I think get obnoxious, but that can be said about just about anywhere with any group of people. Why do you ask?

I drink a little more, and definitely more often, on a cruise than I do at home. I don't think I get to the point where most people would know I'm "over the limit" though. Certainly not loud, obnoxious, falling down or getting sick.

I don't have to drive home and I don't have to work the next morning.

I've attempted to ask this question before (in response to a bunch of VERY rancorous posts about the change in RCCI policy as to carry-on alchohol) with very little sucess. I was just curious as to why the drinking portion of the cruise was so important to these cruisers to have caused such an uproar and so many emotional responses when RCCI changed their policy about carry-ons. It just didn't make sense to me.

I too am not much of a drinker -- more than one glass of wine with dinner and I'll just fall asleep:D !

So now you know why I DON'T drink and why I am curious as to why other people really need to drink in order to consider their vacation a success. Not certain if this is the reason the OP asked, but this is why I looked at this tread.

I really didn't think you were kidding...these all sound like very good reasons to me :D ! For me drinking on a cruise is just more relaxing as there's nothing that has to be done (work, appointments, bills etc.) & it's just about enjoying a vacation... each person has different things that they enjoy.

I'm really asking about why folks get drunk, not have a drink or two. It seems to me that getting drunk would not be a pleasant way to spend a vacation. The few people I've known that have gotten drunk don't recall parts of the cruise, get sick, or have a hang over, etc. Just seems unpleasant to me, so I'm trying to understand the other side of the equation.

First let me start off by saying that I never start a day by saying, "I'm going to get drunk today." What generally happens is that I happen to have a glass of wine or two too many, and I get silly and giggly. I am never mean or obnoxious when I drink. I just end up having a lot of fun. I don't have to worry about driving, which I invariably worry about at home. I am on holidays, and if I happen to have to much to drink, so be it. It doesn't affect anybody else but me. Usually, a good morning workout and a few Tylenol cures the problem the next day.

Now, I did have a really bad experience with tequila a few years ago on my first cruise. I avoid tequila like the plague now. That was a very unpleasant experience, and one I will avoid in the future.;)

I'm trying to figure out why non-smoking, non-drinking, non-gambling, Bible thumpers try to be judgemental and impose their will on me.

I'm in the casino, in the smoking section, enjoying a beverage of my choice (or 2, or 3):D , spending my own hard earned money, and enjoying life. If someone else can't understand how I could possibly be enjoying myself,,, then,,,I guess that's just one of the many unsolved mysteries of life.

Time is too short on this Earth for me to worry about how or why other people live the lives that they do. If they are happy living their life the way they do, then I'm very happy for them.

Perhaps that was one of those nasty GOLD tequilas - hate those suckers! You may want to give the lovely silvers - I recommend Patron- a try. Sure, it costs a little more, but worth it.

All those reasons seem good to me! But in all seriousness, why do you care, browe? Unless a drunk person is bothering you (and by bothering I mean insulting/threatening/getting physical), just let them be. I feel that on any vacation people like to do things that maybe they wouldn't normally do at home. If that includes drinking copious amounts of alcohol, then I say let them. I definitely drink (I'm 21, it's what kids my age do) but I've come to realize that I don't like waking up feeling like crap the next morning, so I know my limits. But like I said, as long as they're not doing you any harm, it really shouldn't matter to you if a person gets drunk on a cruise. Also, if you don't want to drink and you don't see the point, no one is going to force a pitcher of margaritas down your throat.:)

Few weeks ago on a Friday night DH is making supper he asks if he made a pitcher of margaritas would I drink a margarita?? Ah, is the moon in the sky??? hellya!! ;)

Little later we sit down to one of his amazing rib eye with blue cheese and also drink a nice bottle of red ......Certainly couldn't have driven a car but by no means was I *wasted*

I awake next morning at 4 with a wicked hangover that lasts all day. Couldn't even keep water down until the afternoon.....:(

I did drink a little too much one maybe two nights of the last cruise pretty much the same way, it can be easy to do with pre-dinner drinks, bottle of wine, brandy with coffee......not drinking enough water.....maybe going out dancing later....

Oh the Chocolate Haagan Daz Coke floats at the ice cream bar next to the pool were an amazing hangover cure!!!

I had one which made me feel so much better that the two very green looking young twenty ladies (with double the hangover) sitting next to me tried them and the floats worked for curing them too ;0

Its the same reason why people get drunk at sporting events. I have no idea why someone would waste $100 on tickets and at least $50 on beer (at $8 a pop it sure adds up) to go up and down 30 rows of stairs 5 times during each quarter to go to the restroom and to get the next round of drinks while having to continually crawl over the 10 people who are seated next to you. I guess how each person defines "fun" is different. I understand that its a vacation, people like to relax and enjoy themselves with a drink or two. But I think the original poster means those people who get absolutely smashed drunk. And still the answer is as long as they consider it fun and a good use of time and money they will continue to do it.

Hi,

Why do people get drunk on a cruise? I'm curious to hear from those that actually do get drunk on a cruise to understand the rationale.

Cheers,

B

Well I have only been drunk once in my life and that was 30 plus years ago-so I am not who you want to hear from-but my guess is people get drunk on a cruise for the same reason they get drunk at home-they consider it "fun".

I am always amazed when many post their bar bills here. I gues hubby and I are pretty boring since ours is never over about $300 for both of us for our drinks-and a lot of that for me is actually specality coffees and diet cokes.

Heck if we spent what many do on alcohol I guess we would do good to take a cruise once every 2 or 3 years instead of averaging a cruise about every 8 months. I am sure though those people make the cruise companies happy.

I have wondered that also about smuggling alcohol. I for one, usually order some sort of drink when I go to a lounge to listen to the entertainment but I am not one to sit in my stateroom and guzzle-to me you could stay home and do that-why take a cruise to do that? I enjoy the lounges.

I had one person reply to me that he always has a couple of drinks to "unwind" every night after work and he also needed to "unwind" every evening on a cruise before going to dinner. He sounded to me like a an alcoholic in denial, why would anyone need to unwind on a cruiseship? Your cares are miles away then-at least all my cares are left at home when I am on a cruise.

Now I can understand high bar bills for those who are really into quality wine-good wine is expensive and those that enjoy that are actually rarely drunk. They also would not smuggle their wine but would either pay the corkage fee or just buy the wine on ship. since they are used to spending $50 or much more for a bottle of wine-they would not be in the smuggling group.

We are not big into wine though-so our bar bill stays low. We don't drink wine and we don't get drunk-so our bill stays low.

Coming at this from a different direction than most; but I am a pretty heavy and regular drinker in real life, but when I go on vacation I don't want, or need alchohol. I want to experience every wonderful moment with full awareness of what's going on. (I know - my real life must be pretty dismal) But I'm actually pretty amused by all the "amatuers" who pay all that $ for the booze, after already springing for the cost of the cruise itself. On the other hand, I do appreciate that some people need a drink to unwind because they keep thinking about work or other concerns they can't shake, and that is fine; nobody should be judging anybody else, except that too is human nature.
