You really need to allow at least 2 full days for these fly in bear tours. It is common for them to be delayed and canceled. EVERY year, people are stuck, unable to get back. You are timing this too tight. You would be somewhat better off, if you skip the 9-7 drive back to Anchorage, and allow this for a back up day. Even if you have to- you could drive back to Anchorage embarkment day and still have plenty of time to get to Whittier. But best would be an additional day over what you now have. You are a LONG way off, are you sure it is so fixed?

The cruise is fixed, the other days are not. Based on the emails with others and the few places in regards to that time of year, it should not be an issue. I am a pilot and if they are dumb enough to get hung up somewhere without a way back then that's bad for them. I have read that a few flights they started out, couldn't get in due to whether and they just turned around (that's the smart way). Its was the customers discretion to get their money back or go the next day if weather cleared up. If we make it great, if not then that's fine too.

So far I have not heard of anyone getting stuck.

Yeah- I make up the information I post. Alaska pilots are just plain "dumb" when they are grounded.

And this means it isn't an "issue" and doesn't happen? There were 6 people who joined a cruiseship I was on last year in Haines- who had happen exactly what I warn about.

This does happen.

Incredible, you reply to a post and get rude because you don't like the response back. So what bear sightseeing trip have you been on that you got stuck on?

Now we are having a conversation without all the other crap involved, the way it should be. That is 2 times out of hundreds I have read about so far. Sure the odds may be against me but I'll leave that decision to me based on weather while I'm there and other things I pay attention to.

Its doesn't take a "Dumb" pilot to figure this stuff out

Ok, just me, there is no need to be booking all these reservations so far out. :) (I don't have a lot of my bookings done for this year :) ) You also appear to missing a significant opportunity of savings- if of interest. In my opinion, your time is too short in Seward, and the boat tour you are planning, is essentially worthless, compared to other far superior tours. What Exit Glacier "tour"?? It's a national park, and an OK glacier to look at. If you walk to the upper level, it's an hour visit.

You would be better off, turning in your car the night prior. You will have to be at the train station by 9am, and you need to allow an hour- turning the car in, in the morning.

If I had done this as many times as you have :) I would probably have more confidence in the ability to do that. Probably should have said "tour Exit Glacier" instead of "Exit Glacier Tour". We debated over Seward - with just the one day, we felt like if all we did was the NW fjords tour (which I'm sure is outstanding), we would have sacrificed seeing/doing anything else that day. Won't know if that is a wise/unwise decision until we do it. And I really don't see how to squeeze more time in there without giving up something somewhere else. Turning the car in Sunday night is quite doable (you already saved me 1/2 day with your earlier post). Planning on getting TourSaver when comes out in November - I'll cancel and re-book if necessary - they won't be able to say they don't have a spot :).

After I booked the cruisetour, I started researching in earnest and realized limitations I had put on myself. I was able to add in two days before the cruisetour began and that allowed us to schedule PWS and some time to visit the Native Heritage Center and other Anchorage area attractions. I also agonized over Denali -- wish I had 2 full days to be in the main park area instead of just the one. I think I have now planned and reserved (**means reserved or ticketed) and am pretty happy with my choices. I also try to sketch out some places to eat that have good reviews and work them in if convenient, but I also ask locals for recommendations when I arrive at my destination. The coupons are from the Northern Lights book. The big ticket items are 26 glacier tour and chilkoot charter in Skagway but everything else was pretty reasonable in terms of cruise excursions prices  Looking forward to an amazing trip - and thank you to all who have helped along the way with your ideas and suggestions!

OK I am DONE! I've pre-booked everything that is important to us and everything else we'll fly by the seat of our pants. Here's what we're doing:

6/20 - arrive Anchorage at noon, take shuttle or cab to Embassy Suites, rent car Avis downtown and just relax and maybe sight see around Anchorage. Leaving open the possibilities of museums, biking the Tony Knowles route and whatever else may tickle our fancies.

6/21 - drive toward Denali. Stop in Talkeetna so my DS (17yo) can take a 40 minute flight lesson. Leave approx. 2pm and continue drive to Denali Bluffs Hotel.

6/22 - Raft Nenana river (10AM) and Midnight Sun ATV ride (11PM) - again overnight at Denali Bluffs.

6/23 - Take shuttle bus to Wonder Lake with the possibility of getting off at Eielson - overnight again at Denali Bluffs.

6/24 - drive to Homestead Cabins with possible stops at Independence Mine, Reindeer Farm, Musk Ox Farm or Eklutna.

6/25 - Trek on Matanuska Glacier and Zipline - overnight at Homestead Cabins

6/26 - drive back to Anchorage to pick up my mother at the airport by 5:46pm. Staying at the Embassy Suites again. Return rental car. Again possibly stopping at Independence Mine, Reindeer Farm, Musk Ox Farm, or Eklutna.

6/27 - take train to Seward and take Kenai Fjords Tour 11:30am (6 hour). Overnight at Holiday Inn Express.

6/28 - Tour Alaska Sea Life Center and do the Marine Mammal Encounter. Board Celebrity Millennium.

6/29 - at sea

6/30- Juneau - take Mendenhall bus to the glacier and hike for part of the day, then upon return to Juneau, walk around town

7/1 - Skagway - Chilkoot Charters Yukon Bus & Rail Excursion (train up, bus down).

7/2 - Icy Strait - Glacier Winds Whale Watching/Wildlife Viewing Tour

7/3 - Ketchikan - Misty Fjords Flightsee with Island Wings. Also thinking maybe any one of the following: city bus to Totem Bight/Potlatch Park, Duck Tour or just shopping (and eating!)

7/4 - at sea

7/5 - Vancouver - HOHO tour then catch train to Seattle

7/6 - Seattle - whatever "moves" us

7/7 - Fly back to Atlanta :(

I am sooooooooooooooooooooooo excited I can't even stand it! I've got all my confirmations and extra ideas (tours, shopping, food) in a binder and put together contact info for my in-laws. A couple of things only had deposits and the balance is due when we take the excursion, but those are the exception rather than the rule!

Time flies by fast enough and I really don't want it to go by any faster, but I so want to get to Alaska and see all it's wonder and beauty! Just so that when I do get there. time will craaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwwwllllllllllllllllll so I can savor every moment!

Thank you all for all of your help with my planning. When I started, it was so overwhelming, but you all helped me figure it all out!

My family and I will be going to Alaska on August 11 on the Golden Princess. My parents have cruised many times, but this is the first cruise for my DD (15) and me. I am so excited I can barely stand myself! :D

We fly into Seattle on the 10th, but late afternoon. Probably will have a little look-see around the city, but no big plans.

In Ketichkan we are taking a sea plane excursion through Sea Wind, spend the afternoon walking around (and shopping!).

In Juneau we are taking a Zip Line and Mendenhall Glacier tour through Princess. (Daughter's request, hope I can make it!! LOL)

In skagway we are renting a car and doing Murry's Travel Tips.

Victoria gives us just a few hours and we're doing the Garden excursion through princess.

Sadly the next day the ship returns to Seattle and we will be catching our flight home that afternoon. :(
