:p    We are taking Insignia cruise Sept1 Athens to Rome. Our final port is Civitavecchia. We are staying a week in Rapallo and planning to take a train. Does anybody know if Oceania has a shuttle from the ship to the train station. Any information is very appreciated.

Thanks Alla and Frank

Alla & Frank-

No shuttle is provided by O.

The Civitavecchia Port Authority does provide a (very un-scheduled) shuttle from the various ships in port to the port entrance (or, would one call it a port exit as you will be exiting?). It seemed to us that the shuttle ran about every 25 to 45 minutes.

Unfortunately, the train station is about 5 (longish) blocks from that port entrance/ exit.

We'd recommend that you take the taxi directly from the ship, rather than bothering to transfer luggage into a cab for only 5 blocks. We always feel odd taking a cab for such short distances.

You can get the Civitavecchia to Rome train schedule, fares and information at: http://www.raileurope.com/us/index.htm

Hope this helped-

The walk from the port exit ( where the port bus service drops you off) to the train station is not difficult for a normal person. Only if you suffer from a disability or would find a 10 minute stroll taxing , then you need to arrange a ride.

I understand for the 'ports -med' section of these boards that taxis will usually not take you as the train station is too close to the port. Maybe they would if you offered a lot of extra money.

Also depending on which platform you arrive into at Civitavecchia train station, you may have to climb 2 flights of stairs.

I'm travelling with my mother so the combination of the steps, and walking with all our baggage wasn't an option for us. We have booked a taxi transfer from FCO airport, which is expensive at 130 Euros - but money well spent compared to mum making her back worse dragging her case along.

The taxi transfer was cheaper than the transfer option offered by Oceania.

When we disembarked last week, we tried getting a cab from the ship but no drivers could be located at all. Similarly, at the port entrance when dropped off by the shuttle, none of the taxi drivers there would run us over to the station. They were all seeking fares to Rome or the airport, asking 100 Euros for the trip. Instead we rolled/lugged our luggage the 5-block/10-minute walk to the station. The course is flat if cobbly (for those who roll) and easy, you just walk along the main, waterside boulevard and cross the street when you get to the station. The stairs comment refers to a need to descend under the tracks and ascend on the far side of the platform, depending on your train. As we descended, one woman was bouncing her large rolling suitcase down the stairs. When she started dragging it up on the far side, a young man (kindness of strangers) help carry it up. BTW, the train fare to Rome was a little over 4 Euros pp.; even with a cab to our hotel and a tip at the far end, our transfer cost us under 20 Euros.

We took the train from Civitavecchia to Rome back in April of this year. As long as your luggage is on rollers you should be able to walk there. There was a shuttle bus that took us to the port entrance. Once there, we turned to the right and made the 10 minute or so walk to the station.

Also, if your train is headed into Rome, you'll stop at several train stations along the way. Make sure you have your luggage close at hand during the train ride. There have been reports of luggage being snatched by thieves just before the train door closes, not giving you enough time to react.

We will be on that cruise and are interested in sharing a taxi from the port to centre of Rome. If you are interested do respond.
