Do You Ever Feel Self-Conscious on a Cruise?

Recommended Posts

I concur with all the positive affirmations that you have been given, but there have been times, strange as this may sound, when I have been embarrassed for other people. I know this is bizarre to be embarrassed for somebody I don't even know, but it has happened. I have seen people wear outfits that are so outlandish and revealing I have been embarrassed on their behalf. But I do think you should wear what you feel comfortable and not worry about what others think.

You're right. I went on spring break with a friend in high school to Destin beach, Florida, and the outfits her parents wore.... Bless their hearts, they are beautiful people on the inside and out, but let's just say that what they were wearing wasn't exactly what I would have selected. However that's freedom of choice, and I'm happy they were comfortable.

Sugar, If that's you in those PICS you are beautiful! Nursing school has made you crazy!!:D Believe me, you will be the envy of many an old fat lady like me...;) You will look back at these times when you are older and realize how truly lovely you were....Take it from me. You go on this cruise and knock em dead! You'll be amazed by the folks you see, all of who will be having a ball as they should and not giving a hoot what they look like. Best of luck for a great cruise and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a Sparkler!

Yes, that is one of the reasons why I work hard to stay in shape. The main reason is so I can enjoy a active and healthy life.

The last cruise I was on Nov 1 thru Nov 8 a woman 57 years of age died from a heart attack on a snorkeling trip. I heard from one of the passengers on that trip that her husband could only stand there and watch her die. The crew was not prepared to handle the situation. They pulled up their anchors and left some of the snorkelers in the water as they raced to shore. She was dead before they got there. I was told that the lady was way overweight. A very sad situation.

I'd suggest an egoectomy for you. Glad that you want to enjoy health, as you define it.

But, before you lump all of us lumpy people as high risk, and in shape ones as low risk, just remember that Jim Fixx died of a AMI, the same as Yul Brynner. Brynner smoked, drank, and chased/caught lots of women. Jim Fixx ran a lot. If I'm gonna go, I'd rather go like Yul.

Seriously, though, family history and genetics is an important precursor to health. Fixx's family had a Hx of atherschlerosis. Fiix himself, in his mid 30's weighed over 200, and smoked 2 packs a day. He began running, stopped smoking and got in better shape, yet in his early 50's met his death.

So, to the OP, as an official leader of the lumpy club, I say enjoy your cruise, and don't worry what you think anyone else might be thinking.

Your presence and enjoyment is what matters. As to body shape, size, dimensions..those that matter don't mind, those that mind don't matter.

OMG!!! don't worry about how you look. I'm sure you look fine by just looking at your picture. I'm short and fluffly and yeah sometimes it bothers me but once I got on the ship it all went away!!!! I looked around and said what the heck I'm here to have fun and besides I'm on vacation!!!! For those that think being overweight is unhealthy well not for all of us. I do not have any medical problems being overweight. I know that its hard on your joints and makes you heart beat harder but being thin can cause the same thing!!!

So you go girl and have fun on your cruise and don't worry about a thing because once our on the ship you will know what I mean:D

DW is 5'0", 110 lbs, and loves to say how fat she is, or fat she feels in front of others.

It's a personality flaw, but she loves how she "hears", "oh you're not fat" as a result of her prompts.

She's also been bulemic and anorexic.

I love cruising and have been on many cruises. I seen all body types. I used to be thinner, but the cruises seem to shrink my clothes.

I wasn't self conscious until now. I had 2 major surgeries this year, which left me with 2 scars - a huge 14" scar on my chest/stomach and a 5" scar on my side - both look nasty. I wasn't supposed to make it.

I am on a cruise next month, and yes I will hang out at the pool and go to the beach, but I will wear a shirt at all times. I shouldn't get suntaned on the scars and I don't want stares. I would gladly trade being overweight instead.

Most people will not stare at a "fluffy" person, usually it is the "barbie" or "Ken" that gets the stares. Remember that the stares may come from jealous people. It's whats inside that counts.

Have a great time and hope you get the ring.

Aw. She is teeny! I'm sure she is beautiful, Pete. I'm glad she has overcome all of that!

I know I'm not a very big girl. But I'm bigger than I used to be, and along with a few pounds creeping back on,it has brought me to feel bad about myself. I lost 22 lbs this year. Early this year. I bought all new clothes and such in smaller sizes, and my cheerleading uniform could button on the tightest button. Now, I'm in between my smaller clothes and my "before" clothes. It just makes me feel bad about myself, you know? I think part of the reason this has happened is because I'm with someone now that loves me for me, so I eat whatever he cooks for me if he cooks, and I don't feel bad when I'm with him.

Jordan, I keep looking at your pics and all I can say is HUBBA HUBBA!! If he doesn't get you that sparkler and make you his bride on this cruie HE IS CRAZY!!!!

The reason I say all bodies are perfect and beautiful is because I am a veteran...I have scars from various skirmishes around our planet and for a long time I was self-concious (some of those scars are on the inside..kno what I mean?) some very intense help from the VA and my beautiful, wonderful wife have finally helped me to feel somewhat normal.

Please, please, please don't be self-conscious, you are a babe inside and out!!!!!

I finally quit smoking after 14 different attempts...chantix worked like a miracle, but..packed on 35 extra pounds. My doctor wasnt upset about the weight gain but I was. Problem is, with being disabled I am restricted to only a few exercises. Plus my activity is wayyyyyy down to what it was pre-disability. I use to be a very active nurse working full time 12 hr shifts, wife and mother of two sons who were active in all kinds after school stuff...then the world fell in...but in the end, some good things came out of the disability..my sons both changed for the better...and so did my husband. They went from being somewhat selfish to completely selfless in their devotion to me and many others after that. My sons learned how to cook, clean, laundry etc. Gradually I have been able to return to doing some of these things on "good" days. But my days of being able to really lose weight or good exercise are over but at this point..hell I am so happy to be alive and cruising...God hears me say it so often he knows what I mean lol. Don't worry about looks..worry about the love in your heart and the singing in your soul...then you can have fun anywhere :D

Hear hear

Jordan and Jennlee.

It made me sad to read both of your posts with you feeling down about yourselves.

You are both beautiful ladies as Bulldog says "inside AND out"

You are going to be with people you love and people who love you..that is all that matters

Jordan if this guy knows whats go for him , he'll get down on one knee and beg you to marry him.

Jennlee, I don't know if you are in a relationship , but you are gonna make some guy very lucky one day.

Go and enjoy.

Some people want just want to see what pleases them and makes them feel good and if you don't follow that pattern YOU are being selfish to THEM.

They only want to see people in tuxes and gowns on formal night. They don't want to see a guy with "man boobs" without a shirt around the pool

They don't want to see someone in shorts in the casino or showroom after dinner. And they call YOU selfish if you don't conform.:) :)

A few years back there was a guy that was trying to get a system like this in place . Fortunately he got his ass kicked when he tried to invade Russia and a short time later blew his brains out in his bunker during a harmonica solo :)

Enjoy your cruises, and yourselves , and the people you love.

It will make your life wonderful and at the same time piss off the people who try and make you feel bad about yourselves.

God Bless Sweet lady :)

What a wonderful attitude

I am sorry for your medical problems , but I applaud you and your family on how you have dealt with it and overcome so much.

It is so easy to become bitter and withdrawn after a thing like that, but you ahve showed them all.

I hope your family and mine , and all the great CCers here (whining, dissapproving pains in the asses can stay home *LOL*) can cruise together one day.

Lets raise hell and drive'em all crazy :)

Best of luck to you always

Taking your health seriously is understandable; being too young (making an assumption here) to remember Red Skelton is a tragedy, he was the best comedian ever; a joke is a joke is a joke, some will find it funny, others will not and still others will attack a person for making a joke they do not find funny...it is up to you to decide which person you will be ;)

Thats the problem with the world today

People l have forgotten how to laugh at Red Skelton, and Don Rickles, and Jack E Leonard (all comics who made us laugh at ourselves and others)

Lighten up, no one is getting out of here alive , laugh a little :)

You take things too seriously; should learn how to laugh at life and laugh with others rather than attacking someone for making a joke

What part of "I didn't know it was a joke" don't you get:confused: Did I attack after he told me it was a joke.......no thankyouverymuch........
