How much luggage do you bring???

I've been making notes since I started reading the CC posts. And the list has grown since reading the "tips and tricks from cruise experts" thread. We're normally light packers. But with the nightlights, hamper, folding cooler, insulated drink containers, life vest for my son, medicine stash, power strip (and more) and the beach supplies -- we're already at 4 big suitcases for our family of 3 even while being selective about which things to bring.

So how many pieces of luggage do you usually end up with for a 7 night cruise? And I haven't remembered to check how many luggage tags we got in our cruise docs. Leaving this Friday for Miami, and on the Navigator on Saturday... yippeee, 2 more days!!!

I suspect that for the three of us we'll have two 28" pullman's, a garment bag, and a tote bag or a roll-on to carry with us as we board. If my husband decides to bring his laptop it might add one more small carry-on for that.

The last time we cruised we really over packed, taking about double that (although we also had a weeks land vacation with the cruise). We didn't use a lot of what we brought. Not making that mistake again. I'd rather send a couple shirts out to be laundered than haul all that luggage. One of teh big space hogs is shoes, so this time we're going to coordinate clothes better so we can bring a lot less of those.

Your three responses above are what I consider moderate amounts. I was expecting more since I read people bringing beer and other drinks, etc. Thanks for your input. I should review all the stuff I've already packed and maybe I can cut down.

Just returned and had to unpack:(

We took 2 large (29inch) suitcases and a garment bag. Also had a roll-aboard packed with things needed for our overnight prior to boarding the ship. Carried that on the plane so it was packed with personal stuff and medicines. Checked it through on the way home. We had plenty of extra room on the way down and packed full on the way home! Shopping in the islands-ya know! Have to think about that too!

Have a great trip!

3 of us........3 airline carryons. This includes drink mixers and all. My advice is that you will only wear about half of what you take. This is ust how we like to travel. We don't like to check luggage, wait for luggage, or wait for our deck to be called to get our luggage and get off.

Everyone is different but we have our packing down to a science. Last summer we did a trip to the Dominican Republic with a stopover at DisneyWorld with our 7 yr. old with just a carryone each.

Then again, if you don't mind hasslig your luggage, take everything you could possibly want or need and have the time of your life!

The ship has no limit. The only restriction is supposedly 200 lbs per person which would be hard to exceed but would probably not be enforced. The only person that would know you were over the limit would be the porter you give your luggage to. A nice tip to him would take care of any problem.:)

Last time we tried it my DH's way - didn't work. :o So next time we'll take pretty much every piece of luggage we own. 1 large pullman, 1 medium pullman, 1 rolling garment bag, 1 tote for shoes, and 1 carry-on each. We always spend at least an extra week or two in Florida, so I have to take a lot.

Did the Splendour Med Oct. 23., 3 days pre & 2 days post cruise in Barcelona. I had one roll-on which I carried on the plane & ship & 1 back pack, he had one roll-on. Even with this small amount of luggage we had formal attire for our 2 formal nights. Those vacuum pack ziplock bags are GREAT!.

Last 7-day Alaska we had one 26-inch and one 22-inch checked & each carried on a big bag. DH's big shoes (running, hiking, tux & a pair of slip-ons) took up a lot of space (and weigh a ton), so that's where we're cutting back next time. I think I can get him down to 2 pairs!

For a 7-day land trip to Italy plus a 7-day Med cruise, we each took a 22-inch bag & knapsack. That worked very well. We sent about 2/3 of our stuff to the laundry as soon as we embarked & had it back the next day. It ran about $60, and it was money well spent - we hate lugging luggage!

Remember to carry on a day or two's worth of clothing & ALL of your valuable items in case your main bag gets lost or delayed.

There Is No Right Or Wrong Answer As To How Many Pieces Of Luggage You Will Need...for All Of The 1st Timers They Will Probably Take Tooo Much...for Those Folks Who Have Been On A Cruise Before And It's For 7 Days For A Husband And Wife 1 Piece For Each And Share A Garment Bag For The Dresses And Suites And Maybe A Duffle For The Shoes That Should Be Plenty...if Memory Serves Me Correct I Think Rccl Gives You 2 Luggage Tags Per Passanger...as Part Of You Cruise Documents...(should Get This A Couple Of Weeks Before Sailing...enjoy And Happy Holidays...

We fit everything in to 2 carryons with wheels (20" x 13") and 1 small carryon (the type you actually carry) + a garmet bag for formals. We are a family of 4. Mind you we've been a few times and have learned that you don't need to pack much.

Hmmm, I don't know how some of you packed so light...

There were four of us, and we had two checked bags (one very large), and a carry on sachel EACH, and I still wished I had a few things I didn't bring with me.

All but a few of the button-up-shirts/ties that I took for Smart Casual nights got used too!

The one thing I found is that I would have packed more underwear and socks. Those islands are hot and we did an activity excursion at each port, so we usually got back to the ship pretty damp from the heat/humidity. Also, while the dinning room was air conditioned, with the "at sea" humidity we also got quite damp on formal nights and usually changed back to casual afterwards for the shows/casino. I also forgot to pack a pair of jeans which are required for Ice Skating.

I found the "Smart Casual" dinner nights be be very "negotial" in meaning, as one of the days was competing with the long stay in port in Aruba so our dinner crew told everyone that night would be "extra casual". The first and last night were also very flexible because of packing issues. As a result we didn't need the extra button-up-shirts/ties that we packed, but these three things ended up being the only thing I didn't use during the trip.

Check out my cruise review for more details on packing and baggage.
