question about the sushi bar

Why do people insist on thinking sushi = raw fish?

Sushi is actually the vinegar rice and it can be topped with anything.

The rice is what determines if it's sushi, not the topping.

Sashimi = raw fish.

Sashimi is the only food item with raw fish as a requirement for the definition.

Thanks for clarifying!!! Being Japanese and with Sashimi being a staple in my diet (especially during Tuna fishing season) drives me nuts with the preconceived notions! I am finding some places don't even use vinegar rice! Anyway... thanks again!

Thank you for clarifying. I can't count how many times I have had to explain the difference to people who say they don't like sushi because they won't eat raw fish. Some of the best sushi I have had has been tempura, but i will take a good Ahi tuna or yellowtail sashimi over that, any day.

Ah, I see someone beat me to the clarification of raw fish does not mean "sushi. Yes, sushi refers to the rice not the type of fish used.

I am new to eating sushi, so I personally like the sushi offered on the ship. Maybe because I haven't had "real" sushi. But, it is made on the spot, not just put out on plates. It's kinda fun to watch the man make the rolls.

"Not much fresh fish" translates into ZERO raw fish.

That's not true, we just got off the Destiny in December and had "raw" fish....both tuna and salmon as well as rolls. They were yummy and every night the offerings changed, but always included 1-2 different "raw" fish choices.

We were on the Dream in December, and it was the first ship (out of all Carnival ships we have sailed in addition to other lines) where we really enjoyed the sushi. There WAS raw fish - tuna, salmon... and it made for a perfect snack before dinner. They even had spicy mayo. Great job to the sushi chef on the Carnival Dream!

It is good to have the definitions clarified, thankyou. Anyway, I have only recently begun to appreciate sushi. I did enjoy it last October on the Liberty. We had the late dining seating at 8.15, and it was a nice snack at about 5.30 or 6pm. Not too heavy. I also thought that the sake sp? was a good deal at 1.95. It was just a little cup, about 2oz, but the perfect accompaniement.:)

Love this website :)!!!

Does anyone know if Sensation has a sushi bar??? That would really be the icing on the cake for our first 'family' cruise!!!!!

I read your post too fast and the first thing I thought of was icing on sushi, lol.

I've never been on the Sensation, but after looking on Carnival's website i found that there is a Sushi Bar on the Promenade deck between the photo gallery and casino. Enjoy!

There was a sushi bar outside of the Sports Bar on the Legend in December. One night there were salmon rolls which had to be pretty close to raw since I don't think cooked salmon could be rolled. My daughter said that the raw salmon went thru hot water so "technically" it wasn't raw...... but we thought it was good and had seconds...and thirds.

I had it on the Fantasy a couple of years ago when they first started it. I found it extremely mediocre and didn't go back to it after two times. I can get better stuff at a grocery store and I have decided even that isn't worth the trouble.

Reading some of the previous posts, they may have improved their offering. I will try it again this fall if they are offering it.

We had some on the Legend back in May of 09. I thought it was at best just OK. I love Sushi and Sashimi and have it often. It was not like what you would find in a good restaurant. The biggest problem we had was the amount of food they would give out (only 3 thin pieces at a time). The line to get to the bar was never less then 5-8 min long witch I don't mind when on vacation normally. But what would happen is you would sit down eat your to eat your 3 pieces of sushi and back in line for another 5-8 min. This got old quickly and I just left. I was disappointed with it over all and will know what to expect next time. If you don't know good sushi and sashimi you won't be disappointed.

Just my thoughts hope this helps.

I was on the Splendor last week and that ship has a sushi bar on the 5th deck between the casino and all the clubs. It was closed on the first elegant night (Monday) because they had the photo sets all over that area of the ship. The hours were 5PM-8:15PM. They served tapas two nights rather than sushi -- however I didn't stop by on those nights. On the sushi nights, there were only two choices. I do recall having raw ahi tuna (or maybe it was lightly seared?), unagi (bbq eel), a portabello & (cooked) mackerel roll, and a smoked salmon roll. There was little to no waiting involved and the chefs would gladly give multiple plates. They also had pickled cucumbers and carrots each night.
