Best way to fly to Hong Kong

I was looking at flights to Hong Kong but cannot decide what is the best route to go from Florida. We have time so could stop off somewhere for a couple of nights to break the journey or we could take the most direct route with minimum amount of stops. We are quite used to regular 9 hour flights and cope well with them but this is so much further.

Also what is the best airline to fly, with regard to reliability, comfort and space.

Cathay Pacfic is a very well respected airline and based in Hong Kong. They are part of Oneworld (American) and have many nonstop flights from the US. I believe Singapore Airlines flies nonstop from San Francisco and they are always ranked as one of worlds best airlines.

Air Canada has great connections through Toronto, and most often very good fares.

We just flew round trip JFK to HKG on Cathay. It was fantastic and we were in economy. The seats were really comfortable and service was top notch.

Just be careful on the word best.

For some it is the airline and for others it is the number of connections or the price.

We live in South Georgia and usually fly Delta. On our recent Asia trip, we flew to Japan, spend time there, then a cruise ending in Hong Kong.

We used skymiles for the trip and were on Korean Air lines, which was excellent. Flew to Seoul than non-stop to Atlanta, then to JAX. It was a long trip, but the Seoul to Atlanta non-stop was good.

Check Kayak for best prices and look for good flights with as few stops as possible.

Sure, you can stop off somewhere, like LAX, Seattle or Hawaii, but that will likely cost you.

You did not say where in Florida??

We are doing this in March -- MCO-ORD-HKG on UA. Least amount of flights and least chance of losing luggage. Another alternative MCO-EWR-HKG.

Yes -- UA is not the best, but it is FF miles.

You could also try the other way (through Europe) --

MCO-FRA-HKG on LH

MCO-London-HKG on Virgin.

Let us know what time of the year are you planning to flying to HKG and your home (preferred) airport (MIA, MCO, etc.) - and whether you have a preferred alliance/airlines (with its ever-changing mileage accrual programs) ? Will you be flying coach (Y) and/or looking for possible (confirmed) upgrades using earned miles to flying in J or F (business or first) ?

You could fly non-stop to HKG via DFW/ATL (and, further north via ORD or JFK - which I would recommend avoiding during the winter months to best avoid WX or delays) - and, instead - connect via LAX/SFO (as those can be easy stopover - outbound & inbound on the return - although, not necessary doing any good for jetlag) LAX/SFO/DFW/ATL/JFK are all still 13 to 14+ hours of non-stop flying direct to HKG, typically on wide-bodied 777's.

In terms of service, reliability, comfort & re-heated gallery food served at 33,000 - CX or Cathay Pacific is popular & preferred by most "budget" conscious but smart travelers, on personal/vacation & on business trips alike.

OP mentioned time & able to do a stopover for several days - is Seoul, South Korea on the "radar" - no visas necessary & if you fly KE (Korean Air) or Asiana, the stopover is basically free and they use mostly the double decker A380's - excellent choice, IMO - and, the best seat pitch at 34" (vs. UA's typically 31" x 17.5" width) and 18" width - with 10" IFE (seatback personal TV) A good local T/A familiar with booking Asia flights can offer options & best prices and work with your schedule - and come up with optimal routing.

We do a fair amount of TPAC flying on a regular basis and only flying non-US carriers - highly recommend Cathay Pacific (CX) and Korean Air (KE) as they are using some of the newest aircrafts on their long haul routes and maintained them well - not to mention better food. CX offer Economy Plus for a bit of extra legroom on their 777's - but, with KE's roomy "Economy" cabin on the lower deck of their A388's - standard economy is just fine. E+ on CX is extra cost, typically about $800 more p/p on a round trip basis or $1,600 for 2 people flying together - still, a lot less than flying up front in the Business cabin $$$$ (for some).

Thanks for all the help. We are flying in Feb and most likely it would be economy or premium economy. Had thought of a stop in Japan on the way but had not considered south Korea I will look into that.
