Need ideas about saving money on food in OSJ

We will be staying at the Sheraton OSJ for two days before our cruise on Adventure OTS. We are cruising with family who are on a budget so we're looking for alternatives for meals that would decrease the cost for food, especially breakfast and lunch. So, we have a couple of questions.

1) Does the Sheraton OSJ have refrigerators/microwaves in the rooms? The information online doesn't state that they have them so I doubt it, but thought someone who has stayed there recently might know for sure.

2) Does the CVS near the Sheraton OSJ carry breakfast and/or lunch items, such as individual servings of heat and eat oatmeal, lunch sandwiches, salads, etc?

Thanks so much for any information or other suggestions you may have.

There is a supermax grocery store not too far from the hotel. Just ask for directions when you get there. We get fresh fruits, muffins, wine and snacks there. We have also gone to the CVS for some of these items. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the suggestions. I also saw that a Walgreens is being built near the Sheraton OSJ. Does anyone know if it is open for business yet? If so, do they carry breakfast and lunch items?

Many thanks!

Food at the hotel is VERY expensive and the two days I was there the service seemed very slow. Across from the CVS is a Subway. They had a good breakfast at pretty well " normal" prices. Our room did not have a fridge or microwave. If I remember right CVS had some food like sandwiches, etc? Hope I'm not mixing get it up with another CVS.

As I mentioned, the restaurant at the hotel was expensive, but I still splurged on the price of a carafe of coffee so I could sit out on the 2nd floor terrace off the dining room and watch the street and Harbour. It was beautiful......

We recently (May) stayed at the Sheraton Old San Juan...we had a junior suite and it didn't have a fridge or microwave. Where the casino used to be is now going to be a Walgreens...they were working on this and possibly it may be open by now.

Yes, the CVS has just about anything you might need.

Where is this CVS and Subway in location to the hotel? (Within walking distance I assume?)

Walk out the front door turn left then a few steps to the main street ocean front and turn right ... CVS is just a minute or two walk and will be on your right side (past Senior Frog's)..ocean is on your left so very easy to find....you will see Subway basically across the street from CVS.

Exactly.... and apparently there was a place to get good ice cream near the Subway as well - I didn't notice it but heard about it on the ship.

That Walgreens is several blocks up the hill a 10 minute walk away. There is a Walgreens being installed in the old casino portion of the Sheraton. The current CVS is at the end of the Sheraton block, maybe a 2-3 minute walk, much much closer. The Walgreens under construction will be right IN the Sheraton.

Fluffula, last year my son and I went to Mojitos Restaurant on Recinto Sur #323 for dinner.

https://www.facebook.com/Mojitos-Restaurant-1566342686934952/

I remember it as being not expensive but good authentic Puerto Rican food, and not noisy.

I will be in San Juan next week and planning to go back to this place. I will try to remember to post back on cc.

For breakfast we usually walk around and stop for a pastry or donut.

For lunch we usually have something quick and inexpensive, like pizza.

You and I may call it "nearby", but some people want "next door". Some people actually book taxis to go up to some of those restaurants that are a 5-10 minute walk away.

Unless someone is wedded to Walgreens, the one up the hill is the option right now. But, if any ole' drugstore/snack/booze pickup place is wanted, the CVS is much closer.

We’re back from a great cruise. Here is a google map of San Juan. You can do a search for what you are looking for, mark your places with a star, and use it on your phone as a guide for walking around. If you click on that location, you get more info like the tel number and website.

https://goo.gl/maps/Li73AMaht672

If you are staying at the Sheraton, it is shown on the map, on Calle Marina opposite the docks. The CVS has an entrance 1 block west.

Two blocks north of the Sheraton is a street called Recinto Sur, running east west. It is full of restaurants, including Mojitos (#323) and Raices (#315). We had a delicious dinner at Mojitos. The portions are large. The prices of the restaurants on this street seem to be similar. Here is the menu from Mojitos:

From the Sheraton, if you walk 4 blocks west along the water you arrive at Rotunda del Municipio and the start of Paseo de la Princesa. There were food trucks and kiosks. Filled crepes were about $2.50, hot dogs $2.25, hamburgers $3, empanadas $3, other treats $1 to $3:

If you walk north 3 blocks from the Rotunda del Municipio you arrive at Plaza de Armas. There is El Meson (sandwiches), Wendy’s, Subways, Walgreens, another pharmacy, and Supermax (grocery store) where they have a good selection of wines.

At Supermax I also bought individually wrapped sesame and sesame, flax and sunflower snacks ($2.75 a bag of 12 or 13 pieces). Good for excursions, some protein and low calorie. (I’m originally from China and they have the same snacks there).

We stayed at the Gallery Inn where there is free continental breakfast, but if you walk around, there are breakfast pastries in lots of locations.

This is wonderful information. Thank you so much! You have been a big help to me with my upcoming trip to San Juan.

Can I ask did you download something onto your phone to get this map? Or did you just go to google maps? How do you "mark it with a star"?

It’s easier to see on a desktop.

If you don’t have a Google Account, open one.

https://myaccount.google.com/

Open up google maps and sign in

https://www.google.com/maps

If you are in the Lite version of Google Maps, switch to the Full version. Scroll down for instructions.

https://support.google.com/maps/answer/3031966

On the upper left type in your search. (For example, Parrot Club)

A window opens showing the location and information, like address, tel, opening hours

Click on the star above the word SAVE

On my android cellphone the google maps app was pre-installed.

When you open up google maps on your phone, and you are signed in, your starred locations should show.

Oh my gosh...thank you so much! I have never even paid attention to any of that stuff and only used google maps to get directions around town. I didn't even realize there was a "star" bookmark.

I have managed to mark everything of interest. I'm playing around with it now to see how to pick some of the places and get directions to them using this app. :D
