Black Jack when to hit?

Last cruise we saw a lady playing black-jack. She seemed to win every day. She was very cool and semed to be very knowledgeable about black-jack. She almost always seemed to do the right thing. What surprised us most she always hit SOFT 18, when the dealer has a 9, ace

10 or paint. Seemed to work for her. Could it be the right thing to do? we would love to win half as much as she did.

Thanks for your imput

Yes, it is the correct thing to do, always hit a Ace 7, with the dealer showing a 9, 10 0r Ace.

It's absolutely the correct thing to do!

Keep in mind, doing the correct thing gives you better odds of winning but doesn't assure that you'll always win.

It's always better to be Lucky than Good! :D

You should keep in mind that most of the times, the dealer is going to have a picture card underneath, so hitting on a soft 17 or soft 18 would be the correct move. When playing BJ and unsure of weather to hit to not, you can ask the dealer what he would do if he was playing or ask him what the rules (book) say to do.

I'd rather be good than lucky. Lasts longer.

I play a lot of BJ. Only at the anchor seat. Play two last hands at the table. Don't care what happens upstream. It is just me and the dealer at that point in time. With two hands, I can play them against each other. Works for me a great percentage of the time.

My son, who is an excellent player does the same thing.

LOL... seriously? You must also split 10s! Learn your Basic Strategy http://wizardofodds.com/games/blackjack/strategy/4-decks/

Hit Soft 17 and 18 vs 9,10,A

Just thought that I would throw this out.

I did that once. Had a grouchy old man at the table. I was anchor. If he lost, he blamed me. Not to me but and announcement to every other player including the dealer and pit boss.

I even offered to exchange seats with him. No reply.

I finally had enough. Split a pair of 10's and made sure that I lost em both. That did it. He huffed off and for the rest of the cruise, never sat at the table with me again.

Dealer smiled and winked and the pit boss bought me a drink. Every other player applauded. Now and then you can be a hero by doing something stupid.

Keep havin' fun at the tables. Harry

I don't get how that is the correct thing.. the only thing that will help you is a ace, two, or three... there are many more cards in the deck... personally, i take my chances and hope the dealer has a low card underneath and busts.

The majority of the time, the dealer has a picture card underneath, which is why you should take a hit. Yes something you have a feeling the dealer's down card is a low one, but that is rare.

But if you don't draw A 2 3 you can still take another card.

If you've got a soft Ace and dealer shows 7 or better, you only stand on the soft Ace if you're 10 better than what the dealer is showing.

But if you have soft 17 and you draw an 8, now you have 15, which is not going to beat the dealers possible 17. And then you need to hit, which raises your chances of busting.

Best blackjack story I ever heard had to do with a very bad idea. WHen Foxwoods casino first opened it had tons of players trying to get in on the action but no room at any tables. So what they did was allow someone standing behind a player at the blackjack table to bet on that players upcoming hand. Some kid was playing for $10 a hand and a guy behind him liked the players process. SO the next hand he put down a thousand dollars on the next hand. The kid got dealt 2 picture cards and the dealer had a 6 up. The kid turned to the guy behind him and said "For $100 I won't take a hit".

wow... now that's funny! Did the kid get his hundred bucks??

I have seen this on Carnival too to where you could stand behind a play with the person in front of you... a long time ago... not sure if you can do this now...

That is correct, but you actually have better odds of winning the hand by hitting.

There is only about a 7.5% chance that the dealer is holding a 9 giving him that 17.

But there is a 37.5% chance dealer has paint or Ace, and you've just lost.

There is also another 15% chance the dealer has 2 or 3 in the hole... and now you lose to 8, 9 or paint. So more than half the cards in the deck (52.5%) either beat you or put you in serious trouble.

And this is why you hit soft 17 on dealer 8.

Stand on soft 17 only when dealer shows 7 or less.
