Carnival Hub App

We had both but I believe the chat feature through the hub is still $5.00 extra. With the wifi package we were able to just use our regular text messaging. The Wifi is per unit so unless you purchase 2 separate wifi packages you will not be able to communicate unless the hub chat is activated with the $5.00 fee for each unit.

Good Morning my fellow cruisers. I will be on the Vista in 13 days and I have a quick question about the hub app. If you purchase an internet plan do you still have to pay the $5 for the Hub app or is that included? Or would you have to pay for both?

There is no charge for the HUB app. There is a $5 per device charge to use the chat feature of the HUB app. That is completely separate from the wifi package. You are not required to purchase the chat feature.

Is that $5 for the whole Cruise per person or is it $5 per day per person?

So that is $5 per device for the whole Cruise? And does the chat Feature work pretty good?

Chat didn't work that well when I used it about a year ago but Carnival has made significant modifications to the Hub so it may work better now. Make sure you have updated to the latest version of the app prior to sailing.

Incorrect. You MUST have wifi for the Hub app to work, you just don't have to pay for the wifi used solely for the Hub.
Thank you Mr. Splitting Hairs.

Actually that's more than just splitting hairs. You're effectively insulting the previous poster by insinuating that they thought that they could engage in an online discussion with somebody without actually connecting their device to a network. That's pretty darned rude.

The Hub app is free. You can use it to look at your S&S account, the Fun Times, and even have it send you event reminders if you want to go to something in the Fun Times.

If you want to chat using the Hub app, it is single charge of $5 per person, no matter the length of the cruise.

You do not have to buy a wifi package to chat on the Hub app.

The chat feature is ... spotty at best. Even with everyone's phone on with the app open, we'd get messages when it was convenient for the app. Many texts didn't show up for hours, and most of them were timestamped several hours in the future. Every so often, we could text in real time, and it was great. But that's not always the case.

We used it, we'd probably get it again, but I think it works on "cruise time", where everything is slowed down and relaxed. ;)

Thank you. Glad you told me that I downloaded my app 2 years ago.

That's not good. I was hoping to use it to keep up with my 11 year old. Any suggestions of what might work better?

We are sailing next week and I will be using it for our 12 and 16 yr olds. Based on what I have read.....keep the app open so it updates regularly/better. But in case that's not working. Mandatory check in at breakfast, lunch, dinner pre designated spots. And the I plan to go over fun times and set the reminders on where we will be to meet up also. Just a suggestion. HTH

The biggest negative in regards to going the social media package route and the chat hub route is that you cannot connect with cruisers who only use the Hub app if u decide the social media package is better.

But it is still great that you have options and different levels of function.

Just off the Pride today and we had the chat feature on the Hub app. We never received a lot of the messages or they were really late. We finally quit using it and went with FB messaging. We should have all ask for our $5.00 back. I don't think we would pay for it again.

Just off the Vista...the chat feature on HUB was so much worse than it's been on other cruises! We sailed with another family, and we tried to have a group message with all 9 of us. The chat would randomly stop working for people - it would just stop showing them the group message. And you couldn't re-add them...bc they were already added! So we'd have to start a new group. After 17 times...it got quite old. It was pretty good for person to person texting. But don't even bother with group messages...it just doesn't seem to have the capability!!!

First off the HUB app chat feature is $5 per device, not per person. The signal from each device has it's on "phone #" which is used distinguish your device from the one(s) you are trying to contact through the chat add-on.

The HUB app works with WiFi to access an intranet that is somewhat unique to the ship you are on. Hence it only being able to work while you are on the ship. As long as you downloaded the app prior to the muster there is no need for an internet WiFi plan.

The on board WiFi repeaters are prevalent in or near the many lounges, ocean's plaza, atrium, internal promenade, and Lido ( & on some ships the Sun deck) but are somewhat blocked in the dining room, specialty restaurants, spa, show theaters, sports deck, and comedy club. The signal is also just about non-existent in the casino and cabin areas. Not sure of the capacity in the kid's camps nor teen club, as we don't utilize those areas. As with some other venue specific apps the more users, the more lag or glitches will be experienced by the HUB till hardware improvements are available and made to each ship.

The internet WiFi plans sold on board are limited by the same repeaters that the HUB app utilizes. Again the more people trying to use the bandwidth the slower it goes. The exception being, supposedly, with the premium package, which by Carnival's own description seems to be a separate bandwidth with faster processing speeds (kind of like 2G vs. 4G). Each WiFi plan has it's limitations as to which websites it can access, and which apps it will allow to run.

The internet WiFi packages are charged by unique log-on. So multiple devices can be used by a single user ID, as long as you log-off device A before using logging-in to device B. This makes it possible for a family or group to split the cost of sharing just one plan. Conversely one device could be used by multiple people with their own login, including the terminals in the public computer area on board. Great for saving money but lousy for staying in real-time contact with each while on board.

I have to disagree about the signal being nonexistent in cabin areas. I have received internet in my cabin from decks 1 to 9 no different than on Lido or Promenade. Who is going to be out and about using internet all the time? I would venture to say a good portion of it is when you're in your cabin. That's certainly the case with me.

We usually we stay forward and never lower than deck 4, usually on Sun (10) or Spa (11) decks when possible. And lack of signal has been our experience for those cabins.

Weird. I’ve been on 9 and even up on Serenity and had signal just fine. Cell service is almost nonexistent in the cabins if you have an inside but I’ve never had a problem with wi-fi.
