Meeting other people when travelling solo

Hi, I have never sailed solo before. Do any cruise lines have activities for solo travellers to meet each other in a non dating way. I would be a solo traveller, not a single.

I know some do, check the daily newsletter. Also check your roll call as it's a great way to meet before you even board.

It depends on the individual cruise, as well as the cruise line, and some will be more widely attended than others. However, there are plenty of places to meet other cruisers casually (sitting at a mixed dining table is a good one, IMO), and don't limit yourself to thinking you want to specifically meet solo cruisers. On my last cruise, some of the nicest people I met were a married couple seated at my dinner table (table for 8) as well as an adult daughter traveling with her parents whom I met having a pre-dinner drink in the lounge.

To me the best way is through your roll call. I was on IOS in April and there was a very nice lady from England that was cruising solo. She asked about a pre-cruise dinner and since we were having one we invited her to join us. She was a hoot and we had a great time at dinner. That was an 8 day cruise and we would see her around the ship with other people having fun. The roll call is also great for doing excursions with other people that are much cheaper than the cruise lines.

I have only sailed Cunard, so can't comment on any other… But yes, they do. They have a Solo's Coffee Meet and Greet to go and meet other Solo people onboard. Also, for people of a particular persuasion, the have the Friends of Dorothy LGBT meeting every night, which I attended and met some lovely people there…

All listed in the program.

Have a great time!

I second the roll call is the best way to go, My very first cruise was solo, met some amazing people the first day at the pool from my board. Another lady traveling solo became a very good friend of mine as we now have cruised several times since, and one of the married couples on that same cruise I cruised with last year, and will be cruising again on the same sailing in November. These boards were the best fine ever!!!

I agree with the roll call suggestion. And it doesn't matter to me if I

meet other solo cruisers or not. As long as people are friendly, their

maritial status does not make any difference to me at all.

I have not had much luck meeting solos via the roll calls. I did meet for a single/solo lunch on the Allure and the RCCL rep introduced me to the other single cruiser, escorted us to the MDR and went on her merry way. We had a very nice lunch and conversation and would always greet each other and share small talk whenever we ran into each other again on the ship. The other single/solo activities were a bust -- I was the only person that showed up. I am an extroverted person so I did not have a problem chatting with people I met at the bars or entertainment venues. I also hung out with a married couple that were my dining room dinner companions.

I want to ammend something I posted earlier......I meant to say

chatting on the roll call is a fun way to meet other cruisers on your

sailing but that does not mean there will be other solo cruisers on it.

I do agree with the previous poster though......I am also very outgoing

and it is very easy for me to meet people. As for meeting other

solos? That part does not matter to me. Single, solo, married, divorced,

traveling with a group, whatever....it does not matter to me what

someone's martial status happens to be.....

I suggest that you also look into the hosted/ "singles" cruises. They usually cost about the same, than booking through the line and many times most the group are just solo travelers and not looking to date. You can choose to participate in the activities outside of dinner such as cocktail parties and such.

I have only cruised solo, can't imagine sharing that small cabin with anyone else :p

Last year I did a lot of networking here and on FB (more on the latter) and ended up having the best cruise yet, met a lot of great people and still stay in touch via FB.

I agree! There is only room for one in those small cabins. Some times not enough room for me LOL. Me too. I have met some wonderful people and have stayed in touch through the years. I leave Thursday, solo again, on the Regal Princess and am looking forward to meeting more great people.

some NCL ships have studio cabins for one traveler and no single supplement. Plus they have the studio lounge to meetup in and they plan group dinners and activites.

I've sailed in a studio twice and going for a third time on Sunday.

Best way to travel solo IMHO

Have to agree with this. Roll call is good, but best solo cruising is on an a NCL ship with studio cabins/lounge. My Getaway cruise resulted in an upgrade from a studio to a balcony, but I joined the studio lounge get together as I had done many times on the a epic.. On RCCL, they had a solo gathering but no host like NCL has--so, I had no idea who was a solo and who was a drinker. I'd also advise against the singles cruise unless you are interested in finding a date/mate.

I will be taking my 4th cruise in September (first time on NCL) and I have been lucky enough to meet some very nice people on my first three cruises. On my Carnival cruise they did set up a singles/solo table for dinner. Most of the people were nice, but we didn't run in to each other other than dinner. On the two HAL cruises I did I was seated at dinner with couples and we had a blast.

Most people will be inclusive if they see you are alone. And I agree about the roll call...it's nice 'meeting' people before you even board the ship!! :D
