Toomanycritters Posted August 31, 2016 #1 Share Posted August 31, 2016 Hi everyone, I recently read a review in which the poster mentioned that they had a balcony room (presumably on a higher deck) and they hardly used it because they were on the side of the ship designated for public smoking. They said they could smell the smoke to the extent that they didn't use their balcony or keep their balcony door to the room open. I believe they said they were on an Oasis class ship ( I think) So my question is: Is there a 'side' of the ship designated for smoking and is this often a problem for people with balconies on that side? I've booked a Port side (I think...it's on the left when facing forward), deck 11 balcony room on Harmony OTS for next year and want to make sure smelling smoke would not be an issue. Are guests allowed to smoke on their balconies because I can see how that would be a problem if your neighbours smoked! Thanks, Suzanne

Toomanycritters Posted August 31, 2016 Author #3 Share Posted August 31, 2016 Thank you, I didn't think so, although I wonder how enforceable it is even if you complain to guest services about it, but I was mainly wondering if it is possible to smell it wafting down from the public areas? Does anyone know?

Does anyone know? I've not smelled it wafting from any public smoking area - I don't think that will be an issue. That said, there are definitely people who ignore the rules and decide to smoke on their balconies - I experienced this firsthand a few times. These people irritate me on many levels, not the least of which is putting everyone at else at risk for fire, I mean where are they tossing or extinguishing their smoking materials since they need to "hide" them??? When I smell smoke, I call Guest Relations and they have investigated each time.
cruiseguy1016 Posted August 31, 2016 #5 Share Posted August 31, 2016 The starboard side of the pool deck is usually the designated smoking side. I can't say for sure what it will be on Harmony but that's been what I have experienced on several other ships I have been on.
LovesCruising Posted August 31, 2016 #6 Share Posted August 31, 2016 It could come from an outside deck that has a smoking section. Normally the pool area wouldn't affect balconys, however I know on Anthem for example people have complained of smelling smoke from I believe the deck 5 outside of Two70. You would have to find where the deck smoking areas are and then book a cabin away from that area to be sure.
Clarea Posted August 31, 2016 #7 Share Posted August 31, 2016 Thank you, I didn't think so, although I wonder how enforceable it is even if you complain to guest services about it, ... We were told to call security directly when we had a problem with a balcony smoker next door. It was taken care of quickly.
Cruising Golfer Posted August 31, 2016 #8 Share Posted August 31, 2016 Not sure about RRCL, but last cruise on NCL our room steward told us the we were smoking in the room when what it was, was a cigar that I brought back half smoked from our trip on shore. So I know NCL keeps a close eye on smoking on balconies...
troykahack Posted August 31, 2016 #9 Share Posted August 31, 2016 We too are non smokers. I am a convert, the worse kind. I quit, so others can too. We almost always book something with a balcony, going forward, under present circumstances we are always booking something with a balcony. We have smelled someone smoking near us on the balcony. We call security and it seems to go away and doesn't seem to repeat itself. I don't think they tell the neighbor smoking that it was you who reported them. I hope soon, all of the ships, are smoke free, especially the casino where we like to spend a lot of our time, as long as the smoke doesn't get too overwhelming. It would be much better for them not to allow smoking.

leisuretraveler223 Posted August 31, 2016 #12 Share Posted August 31, 2016 Having trouble seeing how anyone on a balcony of an Oasis class ship could smell smoke from an outdoor public smoking area. I think the only outdoor areas are on the pool deck (no balconies really above that other than lofts and those are not really close), and maybe on deck 5. But I'd be surprised if the smoke from deck five crept out and up to any of the balconies...

All interior areas of all Celebrity ships there is no smoking. We would like to see RCCL do the same. Edited August 31, 2016 by davekathy
north29 Posted August 31, 2016 #14 Share Posted August 31, 2016 from a smoking area in at least a 20 MPH wind your nose is better than mine, and I'm a X smoker and hate smoke. troykahack Posted August 31, 2016 #15 Share Posted August 31, 2016 for a no smoking casino you should travel on Celebrity. Why? Smoking is no longer fashionable or safe. Why shouldn't 90% of the guest be able to enjoy a cruise without smoke. Smokers say they frequent the casino more than non-smokers. I don't believe this at all, they frequent it more because that is one of the few places they can smoke inside and near a bar. Eliminate the smokers and many more non-smokers will replace them. Having said that, smoking on a Balcony is another issue, worth a Guest relations call. Smoking on a balcony was my reference. I don't know if I have smelled smoke form a area above by the pool. Two of my upcoming cruises I will be on the deck below a smoking area by the pool. I hope we don't smell Super Mario smoking.... I doubt they would ask him to stop. I could live with this.... you listening RCCL Ban smoking in casino and all PUBLIC areas where both may occupy. If they want to designate and out of the way area outside to smoke, so be it. But not on Balconies or Casino. It is already banned on balconies but people still do it.

I am saying.... remove the smokers, they will be replaced by non-smokers.... I say that because we like the casino but don't go or stay when the smoke gets too bad.. so what did I say that I contradicted myself?

Thanks, Suzanne As others have posted no smoking is allowed on the balconies of any RCCL ship. IF you see it or smell it report it to GS. Enjoy your Cruise. hansolosmom Posted August 31, 2016 #25 Share Posted August 31, 2016 Going back to the OP's question - it's usually smoke from people on their balconies that people smell as opposed to the smoking areas on the ship. I could however see if you are in port perhaps smelling something from the public areas. I am extremely sensitive to smoke and I have never really had any issues while on the balcony other than one time when someone 2 decks below us was sitting and smoking on their balcony while we were docked.
