mistyraj Posted November 6, 2015 #1 Share Posted November 6, 2015 We are planning to try and stay in Civitavecchia and not travel to Rome. We want to try and do something DIY and hopefully stay local as we are travelling with a 2 year old. Is there much to do in Civitavecchia without traveling to Rome? Any ideas or tips would be appreciated Thanks

euro cruiser Posted November 6, 2015 #3 Share Posted November 6, 2015 (edited) There really isn't a lot to do there but you could have a nice stroll along the waterfront and check out the shops in town. For a nicer beach experience you could take the train one stop south to Santa Marinella. It's around a point from the port so you're not looking at big ships coming in and out all day and it's better set up for beach going, more of a resort community than Civitavecchia. Rare Keith1010 Posted November 6, 2015 #4 Share Posted November 6, 2015 You can make it a nice leisurely day. There are lots of streets with sidewalks with shops, markets and restaurants and it might be fun to have lunch there. On most days there is an outdoor market which is fun to browse around. We also walk on the path towards the train station by the water. Keith
NMLady Posted November 7, 2015 #5 Share Posted November 7, 2015 Having a port stop in Civitavechia, whet is the easist way from port into town? We have spent time in Rome so don't wish to go to Rome during port stop. We don't wish to take the train anywhere. We just wish to spend some time exploring the town. So, what's the best way to get there from the ship?
kuldalai Posted November 7, 2015 #6 Share Posted November 7, 2015 W A L K . Its not far from the port entry to the heart of town and a lovely waterfront promenade . Civitavecchia is a lovely port town, not industrial like so many cruise ports. Nearby well worth visiting are the wonderful Roman ruins at Ostia Antica the old port of Rome . Do a Google search for tours .

Nor would be particularly easy with a toddler.

You and I must have vastly different ideas of lovely. Civitavecchia is not a particularly lovely town compared with many others of its size in Italy, nor does it have much of significant interest. I believe "pleasant" would be the kindest adjective I'd apply......
agabbymama Posted November 7, 2015 #9 Share Posted November 7, 2015 Aside from the actual small Port town of Civitavecchia, the only real site of interest at the location is Forte Michelangelo. It is a large fort built to protect the town of Civitavecchia. As cruisemom stated, I wouldn't call the port lovely either, rather interesting would be my adjective. If you google Civitavecchia, then look for Tripadvisor in the responses, there are quite a few photos of the town, coast and fort. Have a great trip! But you can make it a nice day and sometimes you need a relaxing day if you are doing a lot of other touring on your voyage. I didn't include photos of our walk along the water nor of the various streets lined with stores and restaurants. I have to say with each passing year this town does get nicer and nicer. Is it Taormina? No. Florence. No way. But each area of Italy has its own history and often people just rush through places to see I've been here, there and here and there. Sometimes it's nice just to take a nice stroll and see what you can discover. After all this is the world we live in and each place makes up our world even if it is not Paris, or London, or New York City, Cairo, or Rome. bearette Posted November 8, 2015 #13 Share Posted November 8, 2015 (edited) If you don't want to do much there is a nice looking park along the waterfront. There is also a beach there and shops. You can walk around and see the church and just enjoy being in Italy. My husband and I liked it from just the walk to and from the train station and said we would like to go back. For 12 Euro you can take the train to do Rome on your own and at your own pace. I would recommend doing that since the train is fun for a toddler and you can still move around inside. The toddler is free as well. Then go to the colisseum stop and buy the tickets that day at the Capital hill which is a combo ticket. Start there and at the Palentine hill then go to the Colosseum. Jump back on the train and return with a stop for lunch/ gelato. Head south to find the non-touristy places to eat. This way if anyone gets tired you can leave if it is raining then you can switch to an indoor museum. I did Rome with twin toddlers so this is doable but our cruise started there instead of ending there. Edited November 8, 2015 by bearette

Keith Thank you so much for taking the time to post the links to the photos. We enjoy learning of other cultures and that market is fascinating. Your philosophy mirrors ours. Thank you for sharing. We will have had five days of intensive touring in four other countries so it will be nice to just wander and see what we can find since we've spent a few days in Rome. mistyraj Posted November 10, 2015 Author #17 Share Posted November 10, 2015 Thanks all for the great advice- I should have added we will be there in December so probably not beach weather. Can anyone recommend any places in town to get a authentic Italian pizza? Or anywhere you have eaten and enjoyed?
ROCruiser Posted November 28, 2015 #18 Share Posted November 28, 2015 I agree with Keith. Other than visiting ruins and famous sites in ports, we love to just walk around town, feel the beats of the place, smell the aroma from local bakeries, and try out local food. We spent a couple of hours strolling through Civi on our turnaround day, checked out the fort, churches, and market. It was a relaxing morning and we enjoyed our time spent in town.
