Late 2016 and 2017 Cruises from NYC

It's never too early to speculate about the next round of itinerary releases. NCL has released many late-2016 and 2017 itineraries, but not from New York.

The Gem is moving to San Juan in mid-October 2016. The latest Breakaway cruise available for booking also in October. i wonder what NCL has planned beyond October 2016.

Will the new NCL Bliss come to New York to replace the Gem? Or will only the Breakaway be based in New York after October 2016? If the Bliss is indeed coming to New York, will the Breakaway move to another homeport or will NYC have two mega-ships? Or, will another Gem-class ship be transferred to New York?

I believe Miami will have both the Getaway and the brand new NCL Escape starting in November 2015.

It will be interesting to see what NCL has planned. We should know in a month or two, I would think.

Rick.

I'm still trying to figure out where the Gem is after 12/11/16? I can't find any cruises for her later in December and would love to travel out of San Juan and visit the S. Caribbean. Being a teacher, I'm tied to the expensive holiday cruises. :( Hopefully they'll post something soon.

I don't think NCL would move breakaway from NY as it is designed around the city. but I would LOVE if Bliss came there and there were 2 mega ships in NY!

The last Gem cruise leaving from NYC is a repositioning cruise to San Juan, leaving on October 15, 2016. I believe it is a 14-day repo.

My wife and I would also prefer a Caribbean itinerary of at least nine days. We are taking an 8-night Florida/Bahamas Gem cruise in April since we got an excellent price. It hard to believe that the Gem has now been based in NYC for nearly 8 years. It's our favorite ship. However, if we find out the that the Bliss is coming to NYC, we may change our April 2016 cruise.

I'll have to disagree with you there. I think it's quite sad that there won't be a Jewel class ship based in NY after the Gem leaves.

I am with you there. After being on the breakaway a second time last December, I felt no need to go back nor would I be interested in a similar ship like the Bliss. The breakaway class is fine for the first time but does not hold my interest the second time around. Mainly due to lack of entertainment suitable for families after dinner. It can't even accomodate a different show every evening due to a theatre that can only accomodate one sixth of the double occupancy available on the ship.

Needless to say, my family are very much looking forward to sailing the Gem this December where I can decide to attend a family friendly show 10 minutes beforehand should I choose every evening. Not to mention a bunch of other things we can't find on the Breakaway.

To be fair I do prefer the cabins on the Breakaway.

I asked this question on another thread, is the Bliss coming to NYC?

For Jan. 2017 all the traditional NCL winter ports are available for booking except NYC and all the ships are available except the Gem and the BA.

We are booked on the last Gem cruise available to book out of San Juan (Dec 2016). It's a great itinerary. We have eyeballed a similar cruise on Carnival out of San Juan for some time and are thrilled NCL is offering something similar.

Maybe the Gem will repo back to Boston for Bermuda after San Juan.

The Bliss is currently scheduled to be completed in March 2017; however, since the Gem is leaving NYC in October 2016, perhaps NCL is planning on accelerating the completion to November 2016. The Escape is due to arrive in Miami this November, so perhaps the Bliss will complete a year later.

I would think that NCL will make an announcement regarding the NYC schedule in March or April.

I think that the Gem is going to stay in San Juan for the 2017 winter season. Unless NCL is going to move one of their big ship to a new destination, Bliss will have to be in New York. Unless, they are going to try Port Canaveral. Miami could not handle three Breakaway and breakaway plus ships. Tampa, New Orleans, Houston - I would say now. What about LA, maybe

It would be nice to have 3 ships leaving out of ny perhaps Friday to Bermuda like the dawn does from Boston. As much as it would be nice to have a new mega ship like bliss in ny. The jewel class would be sorely missed.

Unfortunately, I don't see NCL having three ships out of NYC during the winter. Where can they go?

At this time I think it unlikely to see 3 ships out of NYC but I could see 2 of the newest ones. We too like having the Jewel class and the BA class ships here for a change of pace.

Dry dock is scheduled for late 2015...a year before what's being discussed in this thread.

The gem was scheduled for dry dock November 2015, but has now scheduled cruises through this November, so either NCL will postpone dry dock to January 2017 or continue renovations while at sea, as they did this past November when they installed new carpeting, restaurant, etc. Also, I can't see the Gem in dry dock over the December holidays.

On another note, we, too, would be very unhappy if the Gem or another Jewel-type ship leaves NYC. We did 5 cruises on the Gem last year, 5 bookings this year, and 2 in 2017, including a 15-day repositioning to San Juan (sob!).

I'm looking at the Gem's schedule on NCL.com and it has a gap from Oct. 30 to Nov. 13, 2015...so it appears to me that the drydock is still planned.

Cruise ships under 15 years old are required to be pulled out of service and drydocked every five years for required safety inspections. Older ships require two drydocks with that 5 year span. I suspect the Gem's 5 year inspection would be the reason it's going to be drydocked in 2015.

This is my 3rd since the beginning of the year, I have 6 booked and no more vacation time till 2017

How do you get these comp? Is it from NCL or land-based casino? If land, which one?

Do you need to earn a certain number of points or lose a certain amount of money to get these? When I called CAS, they told me I didn't lose enough money...I thought it was based on points, but was told otherwise...

  • 2 months later...

I have been looking far ahead to see where I might use up my future cruise deposit, and just discovered that the Gem will be leaving New York with the October 2016 repositioning to San Juan.

I checked the NCL site, and could find no info there beyond that time. So I searched and brought up this thread, and even though its from February, there still does not seem to be any new information available. I even called the NCL res office, but they too had no info.

I am truly sorry to see the Gem ( and the Jewel class) leave here. We have been fortunate to be able to take it for granted for many years of having two all-year-round NCL ships homeported here. While there is speculation that the Bliss will come here in the Spring of 2017, that does not necessarily mean it will stay along with the Breakaway all-year-round.

One result of the reduction in inventory, will mean that the remaining ships, the Breakaway and whatever RCI keeps here, will sell better, and probably cost more....

My hope is that the Gem will come back on a permanent basis after her stay at San Juan.....
