rosijim Posted April 17, 2011 #3 Share Posted April 17, 2011 We have cruised twice on Viking, 7 days Southern France, and 15 days Budapest to Amsterdam. We prefer River Cruising to all other forms of cruising/touring. You get to know most of the guests, food is top notch, most shore excursions are included - although most are walking tours. Not at all like ocean cruising with 3000 of your closest friends.
bailey554 Posted April 27, 2011 #4 Share Posted April 27, 2011 http://www.facebook.com/board.php?uid=122446663491#!/board.php?uid=122446663491 Here's a link to the Viking River discussions on FaceBook. We just returned from the Danube River Cruise and enjoyed it very much. You have to understand there is no spa, nightly entertainment, or shops onboard. The ships carry about 200 guests, have several port cities that they stop at and there is a lot of walking. But it is a great way to see some beautiful scenery and history of old world Europe. We are hooked! Enjoy
maltese mickey Posted May 9, 2011 #5 Share Posted May 9, 2011 My husband and I want to take a Viking River Cruise (Paris/Normandy) in the fall of 2012. Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions regarding Viking River Cruises?:p We were on the Tulips and Windmills cruise this April on the Pride and had a wonderful time. Our second time with Viking, about 145 passengers, very congenial, relaxed and excellent staff, food and overall experience!
amarsh Posted May 15, 2011 #6 Share Posted May 15, 2011 We just returned from a 17 day land and cruise tour with Viking. Although we have cruised many times and a few in Europe, this was our first time on a river. Viking was 24/7 accomodating. We were very impressed with their organization and customer service and will be taking a Christmas Market cruise with them this December.

oregon50 Posted May 26, 2011 #8 Share Posted May 26, 2011 We were on the Tulips and Windmills cruise this April on the Pride and had a wonderful time. Our second time with Viking, about 145 passengers, very congenial, relaxed and excellent staff, food and overall experience! WOW! we were probably booked on same cruise. We walked away after one night onboard and ended up doing five days on Royal Crown. Totally opposite experiences. Worse than losing the cost of cruise, we had paid $$$ for the drink package. Nonetheless, we were happy with our decision.

suspaul Posted May 27, 2011 #10 Share Posted May 27, 2011 Hi amarsh: just curious, which cruise are you doing with Viking in December? We just returned last week from Viking's Imperial Jewels of China and couldn't have asked for a better trip, Viking does a great job don't they. Glad you enjoyed your first with them. We too are doing another Viking trip in December, Rhine Getaway - Basel to Amsterdam, 12.4.2011. Susan

dpendl Posted June 2, 2011 #13 Share Posted June 2, 2011 We took the "Christmas market Cruise" this past December. Here is our review. We found ourselves engulfed in a winter wonderland. Our trip from NYC was well scheduled and the flight that Viking had arranged on Lufthansa was very comfortable. We logged into the Lufthansa web site occasionally to upgrade and check our seating. (party of 4). On Our arrival in Basel we were quickly met by Viking representative and transported to the ship. We had flown all night so we were some of the first cruisers to arrive which meant we had the opportunity to speak with those that had just finished the cruise from Amsterdam. We spent a fabulous day in the sunshine of Basel taking tours and visiting our first Christmas markets. On departure the snow began to fall and this seemed to set the stage for a trip through winter wonderland.(see pictures at www.pendls.com) Every port of call was well planned and lead by very knowledgeable guides. The service on board was impeccable and with all our wants fulfilled. It should be noted there is not much to do in the ship as compared to other ships but our time was well spent at the Christmas markets. We were disappointed that Viking charged a fee for us to spend extra time in Amsterdam on our own. (well worth it!) This cruise will allow you take in a number of different cities of Europe and still not feel rushed. It is cold so appropriate clothing is a must to maximize your enjoyment. sk8teacher Posted January 12, 2012 #16 Share Posted January 12, 2012 We are looking at this also. Is there smoking on ship? Also where does it dock in Paris? Smoking is only allowed on the sun deck. Docking is at the Port de Grenelle/Quai de Grenelle, an easy 15-20 minute walk from the Eiffel Tower. Cheers,

Rare Peregrina651 Posted February 10, 2012 #21 Share Posted February 10, 2012 Thank You! Just booked the "Rhine Getaway" for December 2 and was already booked on the Cultural Delights in September. It's going to be a river cruising year! The Viking China thread -- 7 years old and counting -- is full of information about all of Vikings China itineraries. You will find folks who have done the cruise answering questions for those who are about to embark. It is kind of like an uber-roll call or a one stop destination for Viking China questions. Since we are packing a small bag, not sure how to do laundry. Laundry price lists are available on the Viking website for all of the cruises. There is no self-serve laundry and there is no dry cleaning. We, too, packed a small bag and used the laundry service to get us through the trip. The hard part is the timing. We had laundry done as soon as arrived on board and then just before we disembarked for the remaining days of the tour. While we really like traveling light (carry-on luggage only), we were a bit overzealous on the shopping and ended up buying another suitcase (which we then had to check) in order to get everything home.
