First, abandon the Burnaby and Airport locations as these are just too far away from the stuff you're going to be doing.

As to the others - I'm a local who lives in the city, so have no need to actually stay in hotels and thus can't say much about the rooms, but in terms of location I'd say that the Delta Suites on Hastings is marginally the best of the bunch. Walking to the pier with your suitcases could be faster than taking a cab (always slow traffic on cruise mornings), you're steps away from Gastown, hundreds of restos & bars within an easy 10 min walk.

The Pinnacle is about as close to the pier, but further West so a few blocks further from Gastown, Chinatown, Yaletown. OTOH, that much closer to Stanley Park & West End (although still far enough you'd likely want to cab or bus, which is why I give the edge to Delta Suites).

Residence Inn is closer to Granville Island, good for the eateries on Davie & Granville Sts, but again in terms of the areas most folks are likely to walk to a bit more distant than the other two.

But frankly, they're all downtown which means none of them are very far from anything - our entire downtown core with the vast majority of the tourist sites (or free shuttle pickup points) is barely 2 miles long and 1.5 wide, so you can't go wrong with any of these three.

Thanks, this helps - actually this will be post cruise arriving in Vancouver on Saturday - how far is the airport or what is the best way to get there?

I sorta do have a little bit of a problem, so keep this in mind :) My sister will have a walker or a wheelchair (we can push her) so knowing this still Delta is good?

also, we're thinking about taking a tour to Victoria, Butchart Gardens, do you know if there is a tour that you recommend for that, I heard it's about 1.5 hr away?

OR, Should we just take a tour of the city, with her not being able to walk good, I'm getting a little stressed, that's why I pick tours to do the visiting, might make it easier - thanks so much for all your help - i feel i need it :)

Gave my two cents on Victoria on your other Q.

With walker/chair, being closer to things YOU want to see becomes more relevant. Gastown v. popular, primarily the Water Street Drag (basically right outside Delta, Water St runs down past the Steam Clock to Gassy Jack statue - I call it the drag because of how many cruisers I see dragging bags around pre- or post-cruise!).

Consider a HOHO tour - which is about half the price of a traditional coach tour - as these stop at pretty much ALL the popular sites in the city. Get off or don't at each! Closest stop to Delta would be on Water Street so just a couple of blocks.

Airport - with someone who has mobility issues, take a cab. SkyTrain is easy and fast, with plenty storage space for cases, but unless you can trundle all the bags for both of you a cab is probably worth the extra coin. Metered fares, all companies same price so just get hotel to call one - expect to pay over $30, but unless traffic is outrageous well under $40. If you can handle all the bags, $4pp on weekdays or $2.75pp weekends and after 6:30pm weekdays (not sure what time your flight is). If you're 65+, those fares drop to $2.75/$1.75pp.

If she needs help with balance not just moving - i.e. grab bars in bathroom would be a good idea - then I'd ensure whatever hotel you pick has accessible rooms and book one. Local gov't tourism site with accessible travel info here.

Wow, you've helped me so much! I will be leaving on a sunday to the airport - if my flt leaves at 9:30 - what time should I get the cab to pick me up?

Is it one price for a cab or if you have two people will they charge more?

So the tour you gave me - there is a tour for 75.00 for four hrs. and they can hold our luggage and yes, probably goes to the same places as the HOHO bus, The hoho bus will be cheaper I'm assuming, and I like the idea you can get off when you want - do they give any history about the stops????

If we go w/ the hoho bus, where can we put our luggage if we can't check in yet?

We have stayed at the Marriott Pinacle downtown and the Marriott by the airport. Both are nice hotels, but rooms are a bit small (by my standards). Not much to do by the airport location (except shop at a very nice mall). Downtown has lots to do of course.

Only reason to stay at airport is to get to the airport easier in the morning (they have a shuttle).

Leave luggage at hotel - while room probably will not be ready (hotels near pier run very full in cruise season) they will be able to hold it for you.

Yes, the $75 tour - with Landsea or WestCoast locally, and probably them also if booked through cruiseline - is the one I'm comparing HOHO to. Comfier seats, but the luggage aspect is irrelevant unless you are going from ship to airport. HOHO is $45, some discount vouchers around e.g. City passports will knock about 15-20% off that.

All HOHOs go to MANY more stops than the tour buses, and all have commentary. The Trolley uses small vehicles, has most stops, and all live driver talking - but if you do get off and back on, those smaller buses mean potentially longer wait for a seat! All other HOHOs are now amalgamated under WestCoast Sightseeing brand, not sure if they have kept canned commentary or gone all live. Bigger buses, random types (some double, some open top) but all at least twice the pax of the trolleys - but no stops at all in East Van (compare the maps - you miss a winery, police museum, science world and a few other minor stops).

Cabs charge per vehicle. All will hold 3 and lots of luggage - if you are 4 people you may need a van which are same cost, but <20% of the fleets so ask hotel to call and specifically ask for one. It's a half-hour to YVR, you should be there 3 hours early per official guidelines but personally 2hrs should be enough at that time as no same-day cruisers will hit the airport until after you do so queues will be modest on Sunday until at least 8am.

So for me, I'd call the cab to come at 7am - if you're more of a nervous traveler, push it as early as 6am. You can ask for wheelchair assistance at the airport - contact them in advance - and you will get some degree of expedited service even if you don't have Global Entry/NEXUS. I often see wheelchairs being escorted to front of the line.

I also have Mariott points we are going to use. We chose the Pinacle downtown hotel. Could change to the Delta hotel, same points reward cost. So it all depends on amenities.

Yes, I see 35,000 points for both hotels, so I just decided on Delta hotel, they said they would hold luggage if your coming from the cruise port and can't check in yet if rooms aren't available. They said to just request an early check in time and it should be fine.

Looking at each one the only reason for us was the reviews and pics on various websites. The pinnacle just looks nicer. Distance to the port is about the same.

We stayed at the Marriott Pinnacle last September and wouldn't hesitate to stay there again. We had a room on a high level with a harbor view, was beautiful.

If you are planning on using any of the hoho buses, it is best to walk to Canada Place and board there as the ones that stop at the hotel arrive there full or with one or two available seats.

Morning of our cruise, we used a taxi to the pier. It was around $7 CND. We went early, around 10:30 if I remember correctly, and had no issues with traffic. Royal Caribbean had shuttles running from that hotel, my DH ran into a rep who said we were smart to leave early as the buses were leaving around 11:30. We got out of there to beat the craziness.

If you have concierge access, they had a good breakfast and a decent spread for happy hour.

I was stressing over which Marriott to choose as well. Ended up with Dekta Suites before and Marriott Pinnacle after.

I like nice hotels and just switch to Marriott Pinnacle from Delta. You never know what you're actually gonna get - which is a better view, the harbor or the city, if we get a view of the city on a high floor is that nice you think? I love seeing the city lights in our nashville hotel

We are staying at the Pinnacle next June also . I picked another hotel before changing to Pinnacle also after reading reviews I was stressed out too.

Just make sure you tell your cab driver the Marriott Pinnacle, not the Pinnacle Hotel as they are two different hotels. They are right across from each other but you want to be dropped off in the correct driveway.:)

Any additional opinions after actually staying at the Delta Suites?

Delta hotels is a Canadian brand, was part of the same group as Fairmount before being independent and finally taken over by Marriot. Stayed at many Delta over the years, I don't think you will go wrong staying there. I have only ever attended meetings at the Marriot Pinnacle. So can't offer a comparison there.

If you are looking for an upscale hotel make certain it is Marriot Pinnacle and not the Pinnacle Hotel (the one across the street). The Pinnacle Hotel tries to be upscale but it older and a bit dated.

Thank you so much for the feedback. We saw a really good price for the Delta Suites on a discount site and after pricing around decided to book there. I was hoping it was a good choice. We wanted to be near dining and shopping for the 2 nights we will be staying after the cruise as well as have a room large enough to be comfortable.

What discount site did you use?

It was the hotel deals through Cruise Compete. They give you free access when you sign up to use their website. Expedia was pricing the suites at 255 per night and the actual Marriott site was higher than that. We got it for 140 per night plus fees. Turned out to be about 170 total per night. We were pretty happy with that price for September.

If you are a Marriott Rewards member, go and link your account to a new Starwood SPG account. You can move points back and forth for stays! Then, you can open up your choices to some hotels like the Westin Bayshore (my fave in Vancouver).

Thanks for the info. I'm thinking of upgrading our room at the Bayshore. Do you have any room recommendations for this hotel?
