Grandeur Engine Trouble

Recommended Posts

As I type this, my husband is picking up my sister and her husband at the Port Of Baltimore. They just returned from a 9 night and the Grandeur limped in four hours late due to engine trouble. Mass chaos, missed flights, and they said the line to get onto the ship is crazy...

I leave in the 17th. I sure hope we don't have any of the same problems.

I have a friend sailing the Grandeur today to Bermuda. They told them they were having engine problems. The are giving them a discount, took them to Inner harbor for the day and they were supposed to be able to board at 4:30 and leave sometime tonight. Apparently the ship can only go 18 knots as opposed to 22. This means the ship won't get to Bermuda until Tuesday at 5 pm and then it has to leave Wednesday at noon. I sure hope this problem will be fixed by the time we leave on the 17th!

Hubby and I have been having a really bad week. I don't think we could take it if our ship couldn't sail with us on it on July 17th! :( I'm sure they will have it fixed in no time! They can't afford to have anymore bad vibes over Grandeur! Hey all you folks that posted on here about being on the ship July 17th, here is the link to our roll call thread! Please check it out and join the fun!...

We were in Dundalk today at 10:30 looking for the ship.. The police officer said she wasn't expected in until 1 pm. We were over the Bay Bridge around 11 no ship. I hope she got in ok. Thanks for the info.

Wow this is a big problem. For the Bermuda run, it looks like it forces a two day visit into a half-day visit. For the Caribbean run... well, there is just no way they can make the itinerary at that speed. Hopefully they will get her fixed up in a jiffy.

We just got home from the Grandeur after limping up the bay. It was embarassing getting passed by the sail boats, LOL. Has she sailed yet?

Hey Jeff,

When did the trouble start? Was it something that you noticed right away?

Not sure when it started, we weren't told about it until around 7 this morning. But last night around 10:30 I noticed that we were sitting still in the water for a time. We walked up on deck shortly afterward and they had Deck 10 taped off, which we went under to get outside since the glass doors were open. While we were up on deck 10 we noticed that all of the red lights were lit (I assume that means ship in distress, correct me if I am wrong.) But we thought we were just waiting for the Channel to clear so we could enter it. When we woke up around 6 though I knew something was wrong since we were around 88 knots from Baltimore and making 15 knots. I could do the math to see we wouldn't make it by 8:00.

We also just got back. I was in the casino late (lol) and nothing was said. The first we heard about the problems was at 7 am. For people that made their own air arrangements, they offered free phone calls to the airlines to change flights and up to $100 each for any change fees imposed by the airlines. Everything seemed to be going smooth. They had breakfast, lunch, bars were open, the band was playing at the pool.

Giving RCI the benefit of the doubt, it probably started when we noticed it, but I'm sure they were working on it trying to rectify the situation. They probably didn't know until early in the morning that it couldn't be fixed and no announcement was made until a reasonable hour. There was a letter printed up that Hugh (formerly known as ScottishVirginCruiser, his name must be changed now since he is no longer a virgin cruiser) showed me in the Windjammer prior to the announcement, but not by much. RCI handled this about as well as could have been handled, IMHO.

Unrelated to the topic, since you were in the bay during daylight, did you happen to see Tangier Island when you went by? I don't know where it sits in relation to the channel in the bay.

Just called RCCL here is the scoop. They told me the ship is now sailing fine and the ship moved out on Sunday for their departure. We are sailing on Friday so I had some concerns.

They said everything is OK so keep your fingers crossed.
