Kiwi_cruiser Posted December 24, 2016 #1 Share Posted December 24, 2016 We have never visited Puerto Quetzal before, and I was wondering what did you do there for the day? or What would you recommend doing there for the day?
PT 109 Posted December 26, 2016 #2 Share Posted December 26, 2016 Check out this excursion to Santa Teresita thermal hot springs. It is a very relaxing day, lovely and clean pools, excellent food. We had a fabulous day on our Panama Canal cruise when we docked here. https://www.viator.com/tours/Puerto-Quetzal/Puerto-Quetzal-Shore-Excursion-Thermal-Circuit-and-Hot-Springs-with-Lunch/d5176-3022P44 Sent from my iPad using Forums
LocoLoco1 Posted January 3, 2017 #3 Share Posted January 3, 2017 In my opinion...that would be a very long day, sequestered within the confines of Puerto Quetzal's 'Welcome Center' Perimeter. Careful, local touts are 'hacking' honest Internet comments about Puerto Quetzal on TripAdvisor etc etc. The city of Antigua, Guatemala in the Mountains is where vast majority will go by Motorcoach. LocoLoco1 That's where we (and lots of folks on our Panama Canal cruise Roll Call) will be headed in a few weeks. Given what I've read, I'm really looking forward to it. (And we've taken the advice here and elsewhere to book our tranportation through the cruise line.)

Rare Turtles06 Posted March 11, 2017 #6 Share Posted March 11, 2017 Thank You guys for the information :) I posted in this thread prior to our cruise re our plans to visit Antigua when we called at Puerto Quetzal on our Panama Canal cruise. We are back now, so if you'd like to read my thoughts on our visit, my review thread (with photos) is at this link: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2456255 Go to post 50 in that thread. Hope it's helpful.
marysb Posted April 26, 2017 #7 Share Posted April 26, 2017 We found Antigua a real highlight. Yes, it is an hour and a half away, but that is part of the tour- see the countryside and hear the guide. We did "Antigua on your own" and it was great. You get an air conditioned bus, a guide on the bus, and then you can poke around the charming old city on your own. A great day!
yeahoot Posted May 4, 2017 #8 Share Posted May 4, 2017 Shuttle to Antigua is available at the port. I didn't catch the cost. Also, independent tour operators have booths at port. Perhapsyou can find additional information about them on the Internet.

Rare Turtles06 Posted May 24, 2017 #10 Share Posted May 24, 2017 Curious as to why you are going through the cruise line. Is the area not safe? Back now for several months. It was not an issue of safety, but of the long distance from the port. Most of what I'd read on here mentioned the possibility of traffic jams on the two-lane road, and advised booking the ship's RT transport to Antigua. Easy peasy, and no worries about a late return. Glad we did it that way. See post 6 above for the link to my full trip report, including our day in Antigua.
OCruisers Posted May 24, 2017 #11 Share Posted May 24, 2017 "Antigua On Our Own" thru the ship is a good choice. :D
urquie Posted June 14, 2017 #12 Share Posted June 14, 2017 "Antigua On Our Own" thru the ship is a good choice. :D Any idea what this might cost? A typical price range would be great to know. bluegiraffe Posted June 17, 2017 #13 Share Posted June 17, 2017 Just to throw something different in the mix, we went to the Mayan ruins of Iximche. This involved a 2.5 hour drive up into the highlands (the ruins are at 7000 feet and the lovely, cool weather made for a very nice change!), a fascinating tour of the ruins, lunch at a local ranch (quite good local food) and 2.5 hours back. NCL doesn't have it posted yet, for 12/2017 sailingsSent from my iPad using Forums We took and enjoyed the "Antigua On Our Own" excursion with Princess. It was about $45 pp. ... 8 hours total ... about an hour and a half travel time on the bus each way. Feel sure the NCL will be much the same. marysb Posted July 13, 2017 #15 Share Posted July 13, 2017 We took the ship tour to Antigua as it was inexpensive as excursions go ( around $50), it was a long way from port, and the best part -you get an air conditioned coach instead of a little van or taxi.
