Navfun101 Posted September 22, 2017 #1 Share Posted September 22, 2017 wife and I are going on our first New England Cruise to: Boston, Portsmouth, Bar Harbor, St. John and Halifax. Which would be good ports to rent a car to tour and which sights would we not want to miss while touring? We are in the process of deciding between a mix of preplanned ship/cruise vs private excursions vs car rental self tours. Our timeframe is first week in October to start our cruise. Thanks! Underwatr Posted September 22, 2017 #3 Share Posted September 22, 2017 If you're interested in visiting Peggy's Cove from Halifax your best option is to rent a car and arrive an hour or two before the buses. As a bonus the cost to rent the car is on the order of one excursion ticket.
hallasm Posted September 22, 2017 #4 Share Posted September 22, 2017 You might get some inspiration from my Canada and New England review - we did ship excursion in all ports - did do Portland rather than Portsmouth. Other ports the same.

paul929207 Posted September 23, 2017 #6 Share Posted September 23, 2017 I agree with renting a car in Halifax. We went to Peggy's Cove and to the cemetery where many of those who died on the Titanic were buried

Rare geoherb Posted September 23, 2017 #8 Share Posted September 23, 2017 We enjoyed renting a car in Halifax to drive to Peggy's Cove, the cemetery with the Titanic graves, etc. on our second cruise to New England/Canada. On our first cruise there, though, we saw the sights in walking distance of the pier--the Public Gardens, Citadel, Province House, Maritime Museum of the Atlantic (with great Titanic exhibit), and Alexander Keith's Brewery. We had a great lobster lunch in a restaurant near the museum. It was a day full of interesting things.

A very short , pleasant walk from the termnal in Halifax and you will come to t he Maritime Museuum. t is along the board walk. They had some artifacts from t Titanic and a nice collection of ships' bells. I have a special attachment to ship's bells and really enjoyed viewing this colletion. TThen, walk a little futher down the board walk and stop for a wondderful lobster luunch.
