dress code from 5-10 p.m. EVERY night on the ship

RevNeal,

I am not ashamed to say DH and I are of the second group. As stated before, my money is just as green and HAL is quite willing to take it. Fancy clothes do not make the person.

I absolutely agree ... fancy clothes do not make the person. I've known plenty in fancy duds who were duds. Conversely, I've known plenty in rags who were princes. And, finally, I've know plenty who have been dressed up nicely who were, likewise, fabulous people. In short ... fancy clothing does not make the person; and, neither does fancy clothing it make the person a snob, stuffed shirt, snooty, or intolerant.

Oh yeah, two of the more entertaining posters. Nice mask there. I'm still trying to figure out what I should wear for Halloween. :) Since this is still a dress code thread, maybe someone has some ideas?

I really can't say. I'll be boarding the Rotterdam on All-Hallows-Eve, and I'll be in Italy ... so this will be a "year without a costume." :D

Hey, maybe I can dress up like Copper and go trick-or-treating aboard ship for pillow chocolates?;)

Matthew 6:28

You know that one.:)

And what about those other smart casual nights. Some say jeans are an absolute taboo, others say they are fine as long as the wearer has a jacket and a coordinated outfit (which is in itself is subject to opinion based on what we have observed ).

Actually, that's NOT what I said. I have, repeatedly, said that since jeans are no longer included in the prohibited list, they are allowed. Period. In response to criticism from someone who claimed that jeans couldn't be dressy-enough for Smart Casual night, I ONCE gave a photographic example of how jeans are not only accepted on Smart Casual night but can even be accessorized so-as to make the resultant outfit quite dressy and stylish. But nowhere did I indicate that one had to so-accessorize them with a jacket in order for them to be okay. Please don't add content or intent where it doesn't belong.

Matthew 6:28

You know that one.:)

Absolutely! :)

But don't stop at the end of verse 28! :D

And why do you worry about Tuxedos? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his Tuxedos was not clothed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you with Tuxedos and dresses—you of little faith? Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What's on the menu in the Main Dining room?’ or ‘Where's the Wine Steward?’ or ‘What's the Dress Code for the evening?’ For it is the HAL Mariners who strive for all these things; and indeed your heavenly Father knows that you need these Tuxedos. But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these Tuxedos will be given to you as well.

The translation is obscure, but the meaning is the same. :D

One of my very favorite Bible verses.

And mine, as well.

In all seriousness, the original is a very comforting passage which reminds me that all that I have comes as a gift from God and not because I am in any way better or more deserving than anybody else. In response, it calls me to give thanks for that which I have received and, then, to give to others.

I am not quite sure why anyone dressed casually after dinner on formal night would care that some busybody gave them the 'look'. We need to take people as they are, not as we want them to be.

Some are bothered apparnetly-I have read the posts. One in particular I remember, a gal said she had planned to call it a night after the show and was in her room about 10 pm in her jammies. Her hubby had decided to go to the casino, and she did not want to go. Her sister called her stateroom, (they were traveling with their husbands, 2 couples) and wanted her to go up to the lido because Sis had the munchies-Sis was still dressed, so she threw on some sweats and they left. She said an older couple in the elevator stared at her as if she was a leper.

As I told her, they were out of line -not her-she was respecting the suggested code. It was best to simply ignore such people and not allow them to know they upset her. Besides, if it ends at 10 pm-then it should not have mattered anyway.

I am happy to let members of the HAL crew make the final decison. It seems to me that they are the only ones with the vote on this issue. My guess is that they will vote with the cash register.

However CDRMARK is on the Rotterdam live right now and reported in

I will post the smoking rules later. Very well-defined in an onboard handout, which btw states "Coat and tie are required in the MDR for gentlemen for formal nights". Nice to see it unequivocally stated. :) Now if they could get the web-site in lock step...

While formal nights are normally sea days, one of ours was designated on the evening we sailed from Istanbul. I have no idea why that was, but some passengers did not get the memo and I saw one couple in casual wear denied entry to the MDR. No confrontation, rhubarb, or brouhaha.

I saw one gentleman up in the Crows Nest in tails....apparently he did not get the word that formal is uncomfortable and snobbish and that he should feel out of place.

Cheers

Mark

Just to set the record straight! That wasn't Pipedreams who posted the "Goals" pic, that was me in an attempt to "lighten up" a situation on an adjacent dress code thread!

I, and not Pipedreams, should therefor be the target of Mommy's wrath which, I have a feeling, was the intention of her first paragraph;) If that particular pic offends some here, that was certainly not my intention and I hereby offer my apologies to those who are offended!

No need to apologize to me Copper!!!! I recognize comic relief when I see it. :D

I have no issue if HAL insists on coat and tie in the MDR on formal night-that is their right to do so. Equally I have no problem whatsoever if someone does enter the dining room in casual clothes on formal night (because of no enforcement) and I could care less if they sit at our table. We are not that uptight. The notion of enforcing this dress standard past the MDR on formal nights will not fly, cannot be enforced, and would be economically disadvantageous to HAL. Whether people agree or not, understand or not, a good number of people change into casual clothing after the formal dinner. If we attend, we always do. And if we don't attend, we still roam about the ship in casual clothing..including an appearance at the show lounge, the shops, the casino, maybe a bar, and always on the top deck.

Roam all you want - HAL does not enforce "da code" in areas other than the MDR (and that has been inconsistent) on formal night.
