Rust, torn carpet, barren railings -- where ARE the famous Summit pictures anyhow?

What is going on re: Summit. Posts are unbelievable. Sailed Summit 6/13-6/20. Family loved entire cruise. Food, staff, ship as a whole was great. First celeb cruise for dh. Was so impressed. Cova cafe, therapy pool. Son's family had a wondeful time. We were hesitant to bring a 10 and 12 yr. old on Celebrity. They raved about the activities and program available for kids. Senior staff went out of their way. Rust-some but nothing I would write home about. Can't believe these posts are about the ship we sailed on in June.

Are there two Summits?

Dirty shower floor? Two hours to get a steak?

Celebrity staff rude, and not speaking to you. I've experienced that on two other cruise lines, but never on Celbrity.

sometimes a vacation or anything else in life is what you make of it.:)

Hi fgc...I agree with you. I was on the ship twice this year and both

cruises were wonderful.:) And I am thinking about sailing her

in February on Superbowl weekend:D

You know that old saying, 2 people....same ship....same sailing.....

2 totally different experiences....it is like the 2 people were not

on the same ship or the same sailing.

I have to also agree with Larry, if something is dirty in the cabin? That

floor needs to be cleaned....now. Actually when I was on Summit

in May, they were grouting the edge around my shower.

Sorry the poster found it such a mess.

We are on Summit right now. So far everything is good the family is having a good time. We will be in Bermuda tomorrow. So far the ride has been very smooth.

We just did the galley tour and I was surprised that the tour was better than the one we took last time (Millennium? Infinity? I can't remember). It was better organized.

Internet connection is not a slow as I had feared.

Gotta go now to lunch. Then I have to go to the casino to get some of my money back that I lost yesterday......

Hi David, glad you are having such a good time:):D

We sailed on the 8/1 trip to NE/Canada also. Thought it was great. As someone previously stated the food in MDR at beginning of trip was disappointing, but everyone at our table agreed the last two dinners the food was markedly improved.

The staff was very accomodating. Never had any serious issues. All requests were taken care of quickly. If I was looking for problems, yes I probably could have found them. But, I was on vacation with family and only wanted to enjoy our time together. Our stateroom attendant was super. Rooms always well kept - even when we only went our for 1/2 an hour.

I did see some wear and rust. But that was expected on a ship that sails in the ocean with thousands on board every week. I would sail again on the Summit without giving it a second thought.

Life is too short.

Thanks, Lois. So far everything has been great on board here except the casino insisted that they take more of my money......We are pleased with the ship's condition

We met Walt (aka ivycruise) and his family before dinner at the Martini Bar. Nice family. Nice to see the people that I have been posting with on the roll call.

Dinner was excellent tonight and the comic at the Celebrity Theatre, Jim McDonald, was hilarious. I especially liked his slide photos comparing Celebrity versus Carnival.

My wife is headed to one of the shops in the Emporium--oh no, gotta go.

To answer the original question, search the photo gallery using the keywords rundown summit.

I realize that the request for photos was tongue in cheek, but for anyone who's curious about these, that's where you can find them, or many of them, anyway.

Of course, these are glaring examples of problems with an older ship, but are selective examples. They probably do not convey a complete picture. Anyone looking for problems will find them. You could probably find some similar pictures of Solstice, if you looked hard enough for them.

Aha mucho gracias! Actually I'm totally going with an open mind...I can have a good time anywhere! I'm Captain's Club Elite so obviously a fan of the X product. I was once on a Russian ferry boat in the Baltics for a week back in the 90's so I've already sailed the worst ship ever! And still had a good time, heck a great adventure actually! But yes, the Home Depot reference was meant to be a bit tongue and cheek! :)

Okay, I found a fairly recent shot of Summit at some unidentified port of call. This was taken on April 1st, 2010. I take back what I said before. It really looks like it's in bad shape.

Good post....please stain the balcony railings!;)

True, although I will admit....I saw that video and it was a bit scary.

I'm thinking to keep my packing to a minimum I'm gonna buy some white paint and some shellac, and of course duct tape! That should do it for most things I think!! I hear these things are expensive in Bermuda so it's best to bring my own I think! lol....

I've really got to stop reading these Summit posts, it's too stressful. I think the person who posted the infamous "rust on the balcony" photos really sums up the confusion and conflicting information out there. While he posted these pics and detailed some of his complaints with the ship, he also gave glowing reviews to many aspects of the ship and posted some photos that are wonderful. See for yourself:

I sailed on the Summit July 18-25 and encountered many problems. Occupied the Penthouse and an adjoining sky suite. Everything from broken springs in sofa beds and rollaway, plumbing leaks in three different locations broken bath fixtures and worst of all brown water running out of faucets and tub shower in both suites for several hours one evening. Beware..........................

How did Celebrity handle these problems? As someone else mentioned, if these issues aren't brought to the attention of management, they will continue.

Just about 25 days til we find out for ourselves--can;'t wait & we do have high expectations! I am more nervous about the weather!

it won't be S class but M class ships have a nice layout & I think this is a good size ship for Bermuda--not too many people on board..

Slow internet drives us wild--On Century it was so slow they kept giving people back their internet minutes-- sometimes more than 20 min to get one short e-mail..Hope it improves...

Hcat,

Be certain you pack plenty of patience for the internet. :)

Seriously, it was very slow the week of 18 July. On the other hand, everything else was what I have come to expect from Celebrity. You will not be disappointed, except maybe with the weather. Will keep my fingers crossed for no h********.

I would be very careful Celebrity has a 2 rolls of duct tape and 2 cans of shellac per cabin limit that is very strictly inforced. You would not want your supplies confiscated by security on embarkation. I do believe however that Celbrity has just introduced a "Cabin Beautification" Package that you can purchase in advance of your cruise, that will contain a great selection of items you can use to spruce of your cabin and veranda. However, again I must warn you that this package is for your cabin use only and must not be shared with other cabins that have not purchased the package. One of the perks of the package is that since you will be essentially doing your own maintanence you are allowed to wear your "work clothes" in to the MDR on formal night. Any passenger that gives you a dirty look will immediately be transferred to the nearest Carnival ship.

Enjoy your cruise!

We just got off the Summit this past Sunday. I am working on a full review of the ship and it's crew. The main issue I had was the filthy shower floor in our stateroom, but there were others as well.

Hopefully I will have the review complete in the next couple of days with pictures. There were some positive things about our cruise....but I think everyone should consider the recent complaints before booking the Summit. This was our first Celebrity cruise and we not sure we will cruise with Celebrity again.

Well, if the shower was filthy, or any other issue in my cabin, I would have called immediately and had the problem handled...and that would be the end of that. I have enough confidence in the crew to know that all would have been taken care of immediately. Been on the Summit several times and found the crew to be very efficient and accommodating.

The second or third day on the ship they provide (in your cabin) and attention to detail sheet. They ask if anything at all needs to be addressed anywhere to drop it off at customer relations.

We had an issue with a blinking light in our cabin. It didn't do it all the time. We asked our cabin steward to look into it. I think he tried to fix it because it was working better for a day, but then wasn't. Also we had a slow drain in the shower. Neither of these bothered us. However on the last day we dropped off the form at the concierge desk. The gentleman there reviewed the issues with me and said they would be addressed. He seemed concerned and I am sure if we had dropped it off while we were on the ship these issues would have been fixed.

At the connections party we were told by the cruise director that if any problems occur, they should be addressed immediately. They want people to have an enjoyable cruise and not read about the problems AFTER they are off the ship when nothing could be done about it. The staff is courteous and professional.

Thank you for singling out my photographs as the source of the confusion regarding the Summit.

I'll certainly be more careful next time I choose to share something with this board.

After hearing all about the rust, we actually gave it some thought during our July cruise while we were looking around the ship. Yep, it's there, more than what we're used to seeing. It really seems to be affecting the decks/railings we could see from the back of the ship. Did it affect our cruise? Of course not. But there's no question that the Summit could go for a good paint job. Since many have noted that they did not see any rust, then you can probably assume that only certain parts of the ship are affected.

We did have an issue with non-functioning toilets over several days. Customer Service seemed tired of the issue and not very interested. But the "mainline" was repaired.

Summit simply looks her age, that's all. I'd sail her again in a heartbeat.

Hi Aaron:

I read Librarylady's post differently...I didn't see it as an attack on you at all. What I read in her post was that (1) there are are some areas of concern, (2) there are also a lot that is great about the Summit, and that (3) both of these perspectives can be seen if we look at your excellent pictures.

I thought the commentary you included with your pictures was very fair, and I thought Librarylady posted the link to your photos so that we could see the pros and the cons. While you had posted about some justified concerns, you had also seen much that was to be appreciated about the Summit.

Thank you very much for posting your pictures. They have helped me to see that, despite some areas that need to be addressed, overall, I would not hesitate to book the Summit.

Don't feel like you have to be more careful next time.

Even though not everybody posted pictures, there have been quite a few negative comments about the Summit lately, and it is for a reason.

Sure, some people had great experiences on her, some had good experiences with some negatives to it (I think that's you and me), and some people had horrible experiences. Of course these situations could happen in any ship or any line, but there is a pattern here with the Summit.

Don't feel bad for posting your truth. And by the way we were also quite dissatisfied with the balcony, not so much the railing but the glass and floor, very dirty.

I apologize if my comments and posting a link to your photos upset you; that was not my intention. I found your blog to be very balanced and informative and your photos were marvelous. I was responding to a question about the balcony picture, which I knew you had posted. I applaud you for sharing this information, regardless of the effect it has on people. Some people will panic and some will discount what you have to say - that's the nature of these boards. I don't doubt there are problems on Summit and I am glad people are pointing this out, however, I was saying that since I already have my cruise booked and practically paid for, I should not keep reading these reviews since it just leads to unnecessary worry now!

I think the most concerning aspect for me in particular is the condition of the balcony, we went out of our way to book a superior balcony because we do spend so much time on it, and really is a big part of our experience. Aaron- btw- your pictures are all beautiful, and truly show off the quality and beauty of Summit. In regards to the balcony specifically, I would bring this up immediately with our RA or Butler, because they are things they can do to fix the rust and the wood varnish on the railings. The railings actually surprise me the most, on Costa Atlantica this past fall they spent a whole port day shaving and re-varnishing all of the wood trim on all outside decks. When they were doing our room, I was coincidentally out on the balcony, the person doing the work said that this is "normal maintenance" for them, and something which is completed usually 2 or 3 times a year, and that they have the equipment to complete this work onboard.

Sometimes I kinda feel bad about being vocal onboard, not because I am afraid that the level of service will suffer, however because sometimes I feel as though particular service/crew members would be reprimanded rather than it being addressed on a more corporate level. I think something like rust, re painting, and re varnishing wood trim is more of a corporate/budgetary consideration rather than something which is completed in routine service. Most if not all pictures I have seen of the most frequented public areas are usually the best maintained, its the balconies and less frequented areas that seem to be in need to attention.
