Susan-M Posted September 18, 2010 #2 Share Posted September 18, 2010 Normally the ATM's provide a choice of languages but perhaps there are some that don't, so you may not have done anything wrong. Hopefully you were able to find another ATM that did have English as one of the language options.
GSPLover Posted September 18, 2010 #3 Share Posted September 18, 2010 I couldn't get ATM machine to use english. Went to bank and ask for help. They wouldn't help. What was I doing wrong? In this case, simply go to another ATM. I've had that happen a couple of times.
Rare Hlitner Posted September 18, 2010 #4 Share Posted September 18, 2010 A good rule of thumb is that if the ATM doesn't do what you want (the first time) immedateily remove your card and go to a different ATM. In Europe you never have to go far. Hank
KirkNC Posted September 18, 2010 #5 Share Posted September 18, 2010 In Tunisia we had to go to four ATM's before we got one to work, all were in French only and the first three would only say that the transaction had failed. Kirk
riffatsea Posted September 18, 2010 #6 Share Posted September 18, 2010 In Italy most of the ATMs do have an English option but I agree if one doesn't do what you want go to another one. The bank itself has nothing to do with the ATM operation. In fact , in my experience folks inside the bank look at you like you are crazy if you ask them for help. Seabee Posted September 20, 2010 #7 Share Posted September 20, 2010 Just curious...if the ATM doesn't speak Engish and one doesn't speak Italian, how does one know how to cancel one's transaction to get the card back??
euro cruiser Posted September 20, 2010 #8 Share Posted September 20, 2010 If you really can't figure it out, do nothing. After 30 seconds the machine will cancel itself and give you your card back.
-Lew- Posted September 21, 2010 #9 Share Posted September 21, 2010 In Tunisia we had to go to four ATM's before we got one to work, all were in French only and the first three would only say that the transaction had failed. Quite often, ATMs in Europe will just stop working when they are out of cash rather than simply post notification. In Bruges last year an ATM kept telling me that my card was invalid when, in fact, it did not have enough cash for my withdrawal. The bank itself has nothing to do with the ATM operation. Of course is does! Who do you think loads the cash and consumables? Lew
