Photographer looking for Nassau ideas

I live in Vegas so Atlantis just seems like an overblown Mandalay Bay to me. I will be there in December and would love to go see the "real" Nassua and get some great pics of the island and her people as I'm an aspiring travel photographer. Can anyone tell me the best places to go and how to get there to get the BEST pictures of local Nassau I can get?? Thanks:D

I totally agree with you about Atlantis being a Vegas knockoff.

I never get the draw why everybody wants to head over there.

I went my first time and Nassau and will never go back....

I would highly recommend this thread about Frommer's Walking tour.

http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=332656

We have done the tour twice and probably will do it again in two weeks when we are there with my In-Laws on their first trip to Nassau.

The Queen's Staircase on the tour and Fort Fincastle at the top of the staircase and it's view of the island are definitely not to be missed.

Another site that many recommend over on Paradise Island, that we haven't been to yet is the Cloisters...

Cloisters.jpg

Stroll about the remains of a 14th century French Monastery that was imported, stone by stone, to the United States by the newspaper baron William Randolph Hearst in the 1920s; 40 years later the Cloisters were bought by Huntington Hartford and installed at the top of a hill on Paradise Island overlooking Nassau Harbour. The Cloisters are a popular site for weddings.

Call (242) 363 3000 on Cloister Road Paradise Island.

Another good place, if you are interested in animal photography would be Ardastra gardens and Zoo.

The Flamingo marching show is neat and when they are done, they wander freely in the park with some peacocks, cockatoos, parrots.

There is also a Lorry Parrot feeding twice a day.

The parrots are tiny, but incredibly colorful.

Fort Charlotte is right near Adastra Gardens.

Haven't been there yet ourselves, but many recommend it also.

I'll try to see if I can come up with some other ideas..

The walking tour is really good but if you want to get a good variety of shots you should consider an Island tour, I think we have done them all and thouroughly enjoyed them, the best was a private tour we did and you can tailor where you want to go, better discussed with the driver, and he will wait for you if you want to walk around for a while. It is a little expensive unless you have a small group, another we enjoyed was a taste of Nassau tour which visits the Fort, and downtown amongst other places and was inexpensive and you can get lunch i between all that clicking.

How about the Fish Fry? I love the colorful buildings. You might be able to get pictures of a chef making the fresh conch salad. And then you can eat the salad. :)

I have some incredible pictures behind a few of those places in Fish Fry (Arawak Cay) where the "beach" is covered with conch shells and the little fishing boats in the Cay.

Queen's Staircase and the fort the lead to is not to miss. The waterfall is gorgeous that is aside the staircase.

Cable Beach is cool and you can get a tour of some of the amazing houses on Cable Beach. I did walk one time from downtown to the Casino (not recommended due to VERY long walk); however there were some good pics that came out of the walk of the ocean and beach, and some "local" establishments.
