How to buy and transfer case of wine?

for all of you who carry on a case or two.....is that flown with you or do you buy in port? I'm leaving out of San Juan on the 1st of May and would love to find a case of wine somewhere to bring aboard. I don't want to necessary fly it due to possible damage and extra baggage fees to fly it. Suggestions? Thanks!

Princess is cool with 2 bottles per person, per their rules.

Cases of wine? Has anyone really been able to do this? Just curious.

Royal Caribbean wouldn't even let us bring a few bottles of our own water.

Sigh. For info on policy please see the several threads opened over the last two weeks. Actually 2 bottles per is nowhere on Princess policy anyway.

As far as a case, you would have to buy it in San Juan. Interstate alcohol laws would make it way too complicated and expensive to ship, and if it flew with you it would be either cargo or an extra checked bag with the attendant cost, thus reducing most savings. Check the SJ port of call for suggestions on where to purchase.

Sure did....In SFO we bought a case of wine, walked through security with it right on the top of our luggage. Absolutely no problem, probably because we had a 30 day cruise to SYD and needed it!

We take a case of wine on our long cruises. Just slap a luggage tag on it and hand it to the porters. We also write our name and cabin number ON the box. Never a problem. Don't worry, Princess still makes hundreds off us with mixed drinks and the casino. :D

We arrived rather late in the day at the San Juan port and they had a small selection left, none all that appealing for the price. There were a lot of empty shelves though so I think if we had gotten there earlier in the day we would have had better luck. As it was we chose two boxes of wine. They certainly weren't the best wine I've ever had but were very drinkable:D.

That's why some people choose Princess or HAL. They treat you like an adult, unlike other cruise lines.

We sailed on the CB 2 years ago, and as someone on these boards suggested we had our cab driver stop at the Pueblo Supermarket on the way to the pier. My DH went into the store while I stayed in the cab with all our stuff. DH was able to purchase several bottles of wine (they have a much better selection at the store instead of the Liquor store at the port). We were able to put the wine in our luggage and went on board with no trouble.:D

Have you read your cruise contract? If you had, you would have noted that there is no limit on HAL and on Princess.

WEBEGONE: So you buy the case in port? I know I sound stupid but just verifying. I will be arriving early so I'll plan to label the box as you suggested.

We usually sail out of Ft. Lauderdale so we bring the case from our favorite store in our town. But when we sailed from Rome, yes, we bought a case in port and took it on board. 12 days later, back in Rome to begin the 2nd half of our B2B, we bought another case in port and took it on board.

WE take a 5 litre box, which is equivalent to six bottles and easier to carry than a case of bottles. Take two and you have the equivalent of a case of 12 bottles.

We have also taken Black Box. Easy to pack, fits in the fridge, tastes OK. But for a variety, we still perfer the case route.

San Juan is just not a good wine town, never has been, My BF bought a lightweight hand truck/luggage carrier at Sears several yrs. ago for our month long cruise out of FLL. It was fun watching the other cruisers while we waited to board. I guess jealousy the operative word. Did it on HAL also.

We’ve done this too and they are pretty cool about bringing more on. Have to think something like a “spring break” cruise would be less forgiving.

Yes, they don’t have a policy on 2 bottles but do have a policy that indicates 1 bottle per person although that bottle can be 750ml. Can be found under the FAQs>Onboard Policy>Alcohol

http://www.princess.com/learn/faq_answer/onboard/experience.jsp

I have never heard or seen them taking wine from anyone. We were told to drop our tequila off at the bad person table after boarding in Puerto Vallarta in January although the elevator door happened to open at the appropriate time and we were able to slip by… :)

The legalities of the amount of wine you can take onboard are determined by the Passage Contract that you sign and agree to at the time of your booking.

That Passage Contract says that you can bring wine and champagne onboard, but nowhere in that Passage Contract is there any limitation on the amount/volume of wine you can bring onboard. (Read Section 5 Para 2 of your Passage Contract on Alcohol Policy) I and many others on these boards disregard the FAQs and go by the Passage Contract.

When in doubt, make a copy of the Passage Contract you have agreed to, and take it with you should somebody try to hassle you at embarkation.

Took 10 litres of wine on in Sydney, Australia and not a word was said.

We kindly request that you do not bring alcoholic beverages (other than wine and/or champagne) onboard for consumption.

Alcoholic beverages sourced from shore-side and brought onboard, no matter where sourced, will be collected at the gangway for safekeeping and will be delivered to the passenger's stateroom on the last day of the cruise.

A member of the ship's security staff will be at the gangway to assist passengers with the storage of their alcoholic beverage purchases. The only exception to the above rule, is that passengers are permitted to bring one bottle of wine and/or champagne per person purchased in a shoreside location onboard. If the wine and/or champagne is brought to the dining room for consumption, a $15.00 per bottle corkage fee will be applied to the passenger's shipboard account. We prefer that passengers bring wine/champagne no larger than 750ml, however, magnums are acceptable. Wine in a box is not encouraged.

Passengers are also permitted to consume the wine and/or champagne in the privacy of their stateroom only, but it may not be brought into any public lounge for consumption.

Please note that any wines and champagnes supplied from the ship's stock to passengers would not be subject to a corkage fee.

The post I was responding to was specified as their "policy" and not the legalities of the issue. I responded appropriately and provided a link to their "policy". If it was a legality issue, I would have responded differently.

We deviate from this policy and have never had a problem taking wine onboard in any quantity, but in clarifying the statement thought it important to post because it amounted to misinformation. It's all good and I think we are all in agreement here.

Love that comment that "wine in a box is not encouraged". I don't encourage that either personally :D. Although I must say at least its not the nasty Almaden stuff of ages past these days.

We hopped onto the Grand Princess with 6 1.5 liter bottles and no one blinked an eye. We also chilled our metal water bottles filled up with wine and took them on deck -ask for a bucket of ice and you're all set.

Wonder if any of you have had success bringing an open bottle into the dining room and avoiding the corkage fee.....

So is a case of wine different from a box of wine? I want to buy the box wine and slap a bag ticket on it. Can this be done?

Thanks.

Also where is the best place to buy liquor? I leave from FT Lauderdale in a few weeks.
