Tiggertastic Posted April 8, 2011 #1 Share Posted April 8, 2011 We are going to be in Naples in October on the NCL jade Can anyone recommend a private company or way to do sorrento for the day please. We did it one year on a cruise tour and they hired a train and it was a quick journey but NCL don't have anything similar thanks Jan
euro cruiser Posted April 8, 2011 #2 Share Posted April 8, 2011 You have lots of public transportation options, if you are interested. You can walk to Molo Beverello (next to the cruise port) and take a ferry or hydrofoil to Sorrento. You can take a bus, or you can take the Circumvesuviana train. rebeccalouiseagain Posted April 8, 2011 #3 Share Posted April 8, 2011 The Hydrofoil would be the way to go. I did the train and I didn't get off in Pompeii where you need to transfer. I headed for "Sarno" instead of Sorrento and it took me forever to get where I was going and then everything closed in the afternoon for their "siesta". So the only place I could get something to eat was at a gelateria, which was good but not the kind of stylish lunch I was looking for. Just make sure you know where you are going ahead of time. Sorrento is beautiful.
JLC@SD Posted April 8, 2011 #4 Share Posted April 8, 2011 I would highly recommend going to Sorrento by ferry......you will have a spectacular view from the water, port area.
agabbymama Posted April 8, 2011 #5 Share Posted April 8, 2011 Just a word of caution. We were on the Grand Princess in '08 and had planned to take the hydrofoil to Sorrento and the Circumvesuviana train back to Naples. Our plans went awry when the Captain announced we were at the opposite end of the docks from the hydrofoil, but that there would be a shuttle. The shuttle didn't leave the ship until 9:00 am and the hydrofoil also departed at 9:00. We knew we could not walk the 1/4 mile, and none of the 100 or so taxi drivers wanted that short a fare. I had a Plan "A", but no Plan "B" for when plan A fell apart. We ended up hiring one of the local taxi drivers (they are not guides, and can't actually take you into the sites, they are just drivers). We ended up paying approx $150 pp for the 8 hour day, but we both agreed it was the best day of our 21 day trip. He was our personal driver, stopping where we wanted stop, eating when we wanted to eat, he carried our packages, escorted us across busy streets. He was truly a delight. So Old World, concern for two older ladies travelling without a male escort. I would suggest going to your roll call on this website and see if anyone else wants to share a tour with you. cruising grandma Posted April 12, 2011 #8 Share Posted April 12, 2011 We walked down from the ship, bought tickets and got on the early hydrofoil....when we arrived in Sorrento, we paid a very small amount for a bus to the top of the hill. We toured all around Sorrento, had a nice lunch, walked back down. There are stairs part of the way down, and then the long slope back to the hydrofoil. Beautiful day! We were the only "tourists" on the hydrofoil. We saw other cruisers in Sorrento, who had paid a lot more and didn't have as much time to enjoy as we did. I am trying to find out if we can go by hydrofoil to Positano from Naples. Does anyone know??
euro cruiser Posted April 12, 2011 #9 Share Posted April 12, 2011 I am trying to find out if we can go by hydrofoil to Positano from Naples. Does anyone know?? You take a boat to Sorrento and change there for a boat that goes down the Amalfi Coast.
cruising grandma Posted April 12, 2011 #10 Share Posted April 12, 2011 You take a boat to Sorrento and change there for a boat that goes down the Amalfi Coast. Thanks, Eurocruiser. After a little more research lastnight, I emailed a tour company for the trip. It looks like not enough time to really enjoy Positano, if going by hydrofoil or the trains/buses, etc. The tour company goes to Positano and Ravello. If you were cruising into Naples, and wanted to go to Positano for the day(we are there 7:00 - 6:30), how would you do it?? Thanks for all your helpful comments on cruise critic! sunsetbeachgal Posted April 12, 2011 #11 Share Posted April 12, 2011 We were lucky that our cruise last September went to Sorrento -it was a small ship so we tendered. Sorrento is just fabulous, but be forewarned that if your plans include shopping (and there is alot of great shopping there!) that most of the stores observe an afternoon "siesta" and close up-it is around 1-4PM. Therefore, you would need to shop in the morning if you are only there for the day!

I would probably go by boat as the public transit options by land are pretty awful. My fallback option, if the boats were not an option, would probably be to rent a car and drive myself. However, I've been there several times and driven in and around Naples - it's not a great option for a first timer. This is one of the rare situations where I would advise paying for a car and driver. Alternately you could hire a Naples taxi at the port - there is a set fare for a day trip to the Amalfi Coast of 220 Euro (no time limit). You can read and download the set taxi fares here: http://www.comune.napoli.it/flex/cm/pages/ServeBLOB.php/L/EN/IDPagina/6665

We spent just a little time in Pompeii, then went to Sorrento where we spend some time exploring before driving up the Amalfi Coast. It was a great day, and we really liked the company we used. They will really tailor it to your preferences.
browneyes7 Posted April 13, 2011 #14 Share Posted April 13, 2011 We've been to Sorrento several times. We have always taken the train to Sorrento from Naples. If you want to visit Positano, there is a bus stop right by the Sorrento train station where you can buy a bus ticket to Positano. We did this, and loved Positano. We took the bus back to Sorrento, and caught the train back to Naples. We are going again soon and are thinking about trying to go farther down the Amalfi Coast.:)

euro cruiser Posted April 13, 2011 #16 Share Posted April 13, 2011 About how long did it take to get to Positano from Sorrento by train? What about by boat? There is no train option - from Sorrento to Positano your options are the SITA bus or a ferry. You can see the bus schedules here: http://www.sitabus.it/sitabus/campania/orarioCAMPANIA/QUADROXV.pdf. If the bus is on time, it takes 45 minutes to an hour from Sorrento to Positano. Depending on the boat, it can take between 25 - 45 minutes. Softball20 Posted April 13, 2011 #17 Share Posted April 13, 2011 Oops - my mistake. I went back and re-read the previous post, which does clearly say bus. In any event - about how long would either option take? Thanks!

I haven't done the ferry from Sorrento to Positano, but it is an option. The bus ride was quite memorable! :)
carolinaski Posted April 21, 2011 #19 Share Posted April 21, 2011 Any thoughts on what to do when in Sorrento? We will be there for a few hours and have elementary kids with us (although they like history as well).
RickT Posted June 14, 2011 #20 Share Posted June 14, 2011 We looked up the Hydrofoil to Sorrento and it seems easy and quick. The Schedule back in the afternoon is either too early or leaves a little late for my level of comfort. Has anyone taken other boats from Sorrento to Naples? I've looked at the Metro de Mere and have to call in an Italian friend to help..
