Oosterdam cabin under disco?

Recommended Posts

I've been assigned main deck outside cabin 1058 which appears to be right under the disco. Does anyone know if these cabins should be avoided due to noise?

Any assistance is appreciated!

I wouldn't worry about it since HAL is full of mostly old farts that go to bed at 9:00pm....the disco should be shut down by 9:15pm...LOL!:D

I wouldn't believe this if I were you. The disco does not shut down at 9:15. How busy it will be will depend upon the people aboard. ;) If this was a guarantee, you might not be able to change your cabin and there can be worse places to be, but if it is of concern I would contact your TA or HAL (whichever is appropriate) to see if it can possibly be changed.

On the deck plan I'm looking at, your cabin appears to be under the edge of the Queen's Lounge and slightly down the hall from the Northern Lights Disco. It may be just fine.:)

You didn't say which departure you're on but if it's May 22, we may see you there. Enjoy Alaska.

The DJ in Northern Lights told us that the cabins under the disco are very noisy and he wishes they'd never put cabins there (or at least put the disco on a higher deck, not directly above passenger cabins). Seems like a design flaw on HAL's part to me. There's a chance that the disco could close or have an early night, but I would steer clear of the cabins directly underneath it. Hopefully your cabin is under the Queen's Lounge or midship area, as another poster mentioned...that location should be quieter.

If you booked a guaranty, you're pretty much out of luck as that's the risk when you don't pick a specific cabin number yourself and/or you state you're willing to be upgraded that said, I've read a lot of reviews about the O and don't recall reading any complaints about cabin noise on that deck. I will say we once had a cabin above a lounge and we did hear noise from the music; however, for some reason it was only heard in the bathroom.

On one Noordam cruise I was under the disco/casino area. I didn't hear anything, even when I was still awake. I expect I would have noticed the "thump. thump. thump." of the base, had it been too loud.

I have a review sent to me by another Cruise Critic Member dated 2009 of Oosterdam's 1058 and 1064....

Here is the review sent to me for the HAL Staterooms/Cabins Pages:

"Beware Main Level Cabins on Oosterdam: I just wanted to let everyone know to be careful when booking a cabin on the Main Level on the Oosterdam. We just got off the ship and had some noise issues with our cabin and others were expressing the same concerns. We booked room 1058 & 1064 so you can get an idea of the location.

The first issue was with the noise from the Queens Lounge. Prior to the refurb many of the dances would be held in the Crows Nest. With the Crows Nest becoming part of the Explorations Lounge the dancing has moved to the Queen's Lounge. The bands that were playing used a bass guitar that vibrated the beams above many of the rooms. This caused loud vibration sounds from 7 until around 11pm. The problem is that they can no longer have bands playing in the Crows nest away from everyone because they now have a library attached to it. This essentially renders the Crows nest unusable except as an extension of the library for reading. There are no other areas to handle bands so the Queen's Lounge is the only other place to do this. I think the only solution is to cancel the bands and dancing, but I don't think that is feasible.

The second issue was with what we think was a broken service elevator. A few times during the cruise there would be a very loud screeching noise and vibrating of the cabin. This happened at 5am the first night of the cruise, another time during the middle of the night on the 2nd or 3rd night, and twice at 11pm on the last night of the cruise. The last time this happened the front desk finally told the stewards to stop using that elevator.

The front desk was very apologetic for these issues and did everything they could to resolve them. Hopefully the elevator will be fixed soon to clear up the second issue. For the first issue, they are still working with the entertainment department to see what they can do, but it is an ongoing experiment.

I would still cruise HAL, but I would think twice about doing a cabin that is on the Main Level. Hopefully these issues will be resolved shortly. These cabins are really at a good location and are close to everything, they just have a noise issue. Information Dated 2009

Wish I could have given you better news on these 2 but...

There are other staterooms on this deck that do have great reviews: http://joanjett2000.topcities.com/HAL/Oosterdam/Deck-1.html
