Cruise to Alaska???

Recommended Posts

Is Carnival pulling out of Alaska? I know that late 2012 the Spirit is leaving North America to do Australia cruising. However, there has not been any cruises to Alaska posted for 2013. Are they not cruising to Alaska after Spirit leaves, or have they not decided what ship to put there yet?

We really want to go to Alaska but cannot go until 2013. Also, we are open to try other cruise lines, but we faithful to Carnival.

HAL has three ships, so their prices are usually less than Carnival's. Im not faithfull to any cruiseline.

I dont think Carnival has released all the iteneraries yet. So, dont know what else might be released.

I would check out all cruiselines, why be faithfull to just one. Princess has what some people think is the best cruise to Alaska with land tour. HAL fills 3 ships. Even RCL has a ship and it had great senior rates. I would shop and compare.

Did you know that you can book Princess or HAL land tours without booking your cruise on them. We did Princess a couple of weeks ago and it was very nice. The train is really special, and a perfect way to travel.

Thank you for the help, Firefly. I'm just real nervous to try a new cruiseline to me in a new location. I have only sailed Carnival (I know, I need to get out more), but have never sailed to Alaska. Therefore, if I sail to Alaska and didn't like it, at least I would like the sea days and fun onboard. But if I tried a new line and didn't like it or Alaska, I don't think it would be fun. By the way, I am 22. Maybe that's why I want to stay with Carnival for at least a few more years.

Your comments about other lines would be very respectful if you would like to give your opinions. (I actually encourage it since I would like to try new things) I just don't know anybody personally that has sailed other lines. Everyone I travel with likes Carnival.

As I said its about money.

If I can sail on HAL for $449 and Carnival is charging $779 for the same 7 days .. Im going to put up with the older demographic on HAL, but Im older than you.

Carnival, having only one ship, the price was hundreds of dollars more was my issue with Carnival and Alaska.

PS Im not really giving you my opinion on the other lines as much as saying if I were booking a cruise, I want to be a informed purchaser, so I compare prices. I was looking at last years Alaska cruises to Alaska and thought the prices were sky high.

We tried Holland America this past March during Spring break and the Passengers were said to be younger on average than other sailings and all I can say is it was pretty boring for someone your age... My son was 20 and didnt enjoy it as much as Carnival.

I have said that the only way I will cruise on HAL again is if I bring a group of friends so that we can make our own party.:D

OP, compare to NCL too. Now they have a younger demographic, and no dress up nights. This is a good idea as well and you probably would fit in with NCL if you like Carnival.

We sailed on the Sapphire princess last year and enjoyed the trip, you must get a balcony to appreciate the scenery. We are in our 50`s ,just my 2 cents.

you'd get a better Alaskan cruise experience with HAL or Princess. They have been doing it a long time and for somebody like me with vacation time I cant cruise Tuesday to Tuesday.

I don't have a crystal ball, but the ships that cruise Alaska are always repositioned somewhere else in the fall. As I'm sure you know the Alaska season is only spring through early fall. So likely Spirit will return or they will put another ship into service doing that run. So just because the Spirit is leaving for Australia doesn't mean Carnival is pulling out of Alaska.

It is curious though, I wonder how early Carnival usually posts the Alaska itineraries.

Alaska is about one thing and one thing only, Alaska itself, the ports and the scenery. The ship is nothing more than a way to get from point A to point B. Sunrise will be as early as 3:45 a.m. and sunset will be as late as 12:30 a.m. You are going to spend all of your time watching the world go by. The clubs, etc. really don't matter, the only time you are in a position when you can't see outside is when you are asleep or eating.

All of the lines that go to Alaska do a good job, and offer pretty much the same cruise.

You will have a good cruise no matter who you go to Alaska with.

Do you know what is the average age of CCL in Alaska?

Do they still do the same stuff on days at sea in Alaska as they do in the caribbean?

I dont know the exact age and can say that when we did our CCL Alaska Cruise several years ago that there were considerably more seniors than the Caribbean or Mex. Riviera.

Again it was a long time ago so I dont remember exactly what took place during the day, I could pull out the copies of the Capers if needed but I do remember having things to do at night after 9 pm unlike our recent HAL cruise where your choice was the casino or the piano bar... That might be perfect for a lot of people but many of our group in their early 20's would have liked to have a more active schedule at night.

We cruised to Alaska two years ago and we went on Carnival Spirit. It really doesn't make any difference which cruiseline you choose, as Alaska is so beautiful that you won't be worrying about what's going on on the ship but just wanting not to miss the awe inspiring scenery. We spent more time on our balcony that on any other cruise we have taken. I would definitely get a balcony for Alaska! We chose Carnival as they had the best price over all the other cruiselines but if it had been RCL or Princess, we would have gone with them. This is one cruise you do not need to worry about ages as you are going to see beautiful Alaska!

Thank you for the reply. No need to dig out Capers as i was just curious since Alaska is a different cruise from the Caribbean. I know they were long days exploring and early mornings for excursions so we tended to go to bed earlier than on a Caribbean cruise.

we did our cruise on Princess to Alaska.:)

I must be of a totally different mindset than the regular Alaska cruiser.

The cruise part of it really does matter to me. I am looking forward to the ports, but having lived in the pacific northwest my whole life - trees, whales, eagles, bears, mountains snow / ice are not new to me. I have not been on an Alaska cruise before. I'm trying something new, it's one of the few choices available without needing to book air from my area.

I'm hoping there will be at least some activities I like during sea days, like gym class, dance classes, something.

I've cruised Alaska on 3 different lines - Celebrity, Carnival and Hal. They were all fabulous, terrific and wonderful. The scenery is absolutely incredible. Definitely look at which line has the best prices for a balcony.

We also did 2 motorhome rental trips in Alaska. So much fun to get out of the tourist areas and see the REAL Alaska. I am hoping to go back in 2012. Would love to do the 14 day HAL cruise but it sure is pricey. Laurie

My two cents would be...

Pick a cruise from Vancouver as then you are in the inside passage (verses going around Vancouver Island.. All sea)

and also one that includes Glacier Bay
