2little time Posted January 25, 2012 #2 Share Posted January 25, 2012 We are off on Island Princess, partial transit of the Panama Canal on 6th. April. Could anyone help us out with information about usual weather conditions, clothing suggestions and whether open or closed toe footwear would be most appropriate ? Thank you.:p The weather tends to be in the high 70's and low 80's. It is very humid with occasional showers. Linen and/or cotton is comfortable. Open or closed toed shoes are fine depending on what you are doing.
MSUcruisers Posted January 25, 2012 #3 Share Posted January 25, 2012 We are off on Island Princess, partial transit of the Panama Canal on 6th. April. Could anyone help us out with information about usual weather conditions, clothing suggestions and whether open or closed toe footwear would be most appropriate ? Thank you.:p Several years ago we spent 2 weeks over the Christmas/New Years holidays in Panama visiting our exchange student. The temperature reached the high 80s most days. It was much more comfortable in the canal zone. The winter months is generally the dry season. We haven't taken a Panama Canal cruise yet, but hope to do so in the future. iriemon Posted January 25, 2012 #4 Share Posted January 25, 2012 It is hot and humid or hot and rainy. Dress comfortably. Sandals or sneakers are fine, no real dress code.
fishin' musician Posted January 25, 2012 #5 Share Posted January 25, 2012 It depends on what you do when/if you get off the ship. Rain is almost inevetable and it will likely be hot as you are only a few points above the equator.
RickEk Posted January 25, 2012 #6 Share Posted January 25, 2012 If you're taking an excursion into the rainforest, definitely wear closed toe shoes. On our first cruise on an excursion in Costa Rica, a woman was stung on the foot by a bullet ant and had to be taken to a hospital.

Kirsten T Posted January 25, 2012 #9 Share Posted January 25, 2012 The sun is quite strong that far south, so do use sunscreen and drink plenty of water. We've done the partial transit 5 times; it's wonderful! When it rained, it did so for brief periods, then the sun was back out. We found lightweight "tech" clothing (wicking material like Dry-Fit, Double Dry or other trade names) worked really well for both the heat and humidity. Cheers, Kirsten
shofer Posted January 26, 2012 #10 Share Posted January 26, 2012 We did the same cruise in February and it was hot! So dress for comfort. Sue

Could anyone help us out with information about usual weather conditions, clothing suggestions and whether open or closed toe footwear would be most appropriate ? Thank you.:p We did this wonderful cruise over New Year's. Rain Forest= Rain. Even one of those cheap ponchos is good and takes barely any space in your luggage. That's what we took and while it poured and poured in Limon, we kept fairly dry. Even when it rains, the air is warm so you are not going to freeze. I would agree with the closed toed shoes in Limon, especially if you are zip lining or going into the rain forest. There were the cutest tiny bright red frogs while we were zip lining and our guide commented that, cute as they were, they were also poisonous! They eat the poisonous ants and then sweat out the poison. Lovely. Otherwise, wear summer clothes that won't make you sweat (it is humid!)

BillB48 Posted January 26, 2012 #13 Share Posted January 26, 2012 We are going next week :D I think that might be a bit dryer than April....I hope. As far as rain goes either month is just as good for it being dry. Rainy season runs from late December through April, however it can rain in the Dry Season... usually not a lot. Rainy Season in Panama doesn't mean no rain, just less rain;) with the Atlantic side a little better chance for rain than the Pacific side. January would be a month one of the better months for weather in Panama IMO. Not only are the rain chances lower but the humidity is about the best it is going to get. Don't think you are getting a pass in the humidity department because it will seem quite humid to someone from a temperate climate.
