cruiserdenny Posted April 17, 2012 #1 Share Posted April 17, 2012 Our Alaska cruise is out of Seattle and will take us to Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway. Does Verizon have service in those areas that will not involve roaming?

Hulagirl Posted April 17, 2012 #5 Share Posted April 17, 2012 Verizon is definitely in Alaska! Your phone will work with no problem and no need to call Verizon to ask. We have used Verizon there many times for as long as they have been in business.
rayliang Posted April 17, 2012 #6 Share Posted April 17, 2012 Our Alaska cruise is out of Seattle and will take us to Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway. Does Verizon have service in those areas that will not involve roaming? My Verizon Moto Android phone had zero problems in any of the ports we got to in Alaska. For that matter I have signal within like a 10 - 15 mile radius of the main Alaska highways while in the Interior. so don't worry about it. dread_pirate Posted April 17, 2012 #7 Share Posted April 17, 2012 Verizon told me that Alaska is included for our nationwide voice, text and data. No roaming. (I sure hope that's right!)
nwwinelady Posted April 17, 2012 #8 Share Posted April 17, 2012 However, as far as I know; there would be charges if you use the phone while on th ship. I used my Verizon when there last time on land and had no problem.
Shmoo here Posted April 17, 2012 #9 Share Posted April 17, 2012 In port, off the ship, Alaska is part of the nationwide service. On the ship, out of port, the call will go through cellar at sea = extra charge. :)
rayliang Posted April 17, 2012 #10 Share Posted April 17, 2012 Verizon told me that Alaska is included for our nationwide voice, text and data. No roaming. (I sure hope that's right!) Before making any calls, just look at your phone to make sure you are on Verizon's network. Also, if you venture into Canada while on the cruise, don't forget that's international roaming... so watch your phone real close. Just shut your phone off when your ship is not tied to land :) that what I did.

Mzhelen Posted April 19, 2012 #12 Share Posted April 19, 2012 Check your phone, and if you see the roaming icon, you don't even have to shut your phone off - just put it in "airplane" mode.
JaniceB Posted April 19, 2012 #13 Share Posted April 19, 2012 I called Verizon and was told with my plan I would receive a text message if the roaming went to a tower that wasn't in the US. I was also told to update my phone before I left home to get current tower info in the phone. They also gave me the cost information for the ship I am on, cost of text messages ect. It was worth the call for the piece of mind.
