Why We Left NCL?

I bow to your superior intellect. NOT!!

The simple fact is that the person in the cabin next to you is either a smoker or not a smoker. 50/50

Now if you want to calculate the proportion of smokers on any given sailing you can look at the percentage of smokers that exist and then calculate the percentage of those that cruise. Now, let us not limit our percentages to North America as we know smoking is much more prevalent in other parts of the world and those people cruise too. Let us not forget to determine if the person is male or female as that skews the percentages also. We can also look at the time of year the cruise might be sailing and that would also determine the type of clientele that might book during that time of year. Now we have all of this calculated and have determined the percentage of smokers on any given sailing. Now to calculate the possibilities that one of those smokers or non smoker books the cabin next to your is very simple...either they are a smoker or not a smoker...50/50. Who books a cabin next to you has very little to do with your statistics of how many smokers are on a given ship. But, if you want to start looking at proximities that is whole nuther Oprah.

As for not understanding simple mathematical concepts, my engineering professors would differ with you.

Have a good day.

Until we tangle horns again, buh bye.

John

I'm always amazed by the number of people who get the "simple facts" wrong.

50/50? Lets take a look.

Remember that there are TWO people in the cabin next door. Each of them is either a smoker (S) or not (N). As a result, there are four (count em) possible combinations:

1) Guest A: (S) - Guest B: (S)

2) Guest A: (S) - Guest B: (N)

3) Guest A: (N) - Guest B: (S)

4) Guest A: (N) - Guest B: (N)

It would apprear that out of the four possibilities, that in three (3) of them you would have a smoker next door, and in one (1) of them, you would not.

I believe (you can check it with your engineering professors) that 3 out of four is closer to 75% than it would be to "50/50".

When I decide that a thread has outlived its usefulness to me, I simply choose to no longer read that thread. After all, just because I'm "done" with a thread doesn't automatically mean that other people are as well.

Am I doing the right thing by simply ignoring threads that I no longer find useful and/or productive, or should I take it to the next level and get the thread shut down completely?

After all...if I'm not going to participate in the thread, then why should anyone else have that opportunity??

It takes approximately 5 minutes to smoke a cigarette. A person who is your average smoker has about 20 a day. That's an hour and 40 minutes per day that someone could be so incredibly offended by the smell they couldn't possibly sit on their balcony without choking. BUT that's 23 hours and 20 minutes that remains smoke free. If a person is a heavy 40 a day smoker there's still over 20 hours a day remaining smoke free.

Oh, and this "everyone around me smoking": unless you are in some freakish weather conditions there's little chance of people smoking on all sides finding their smoke ending in your balcony.

There have been some very valid points made in this thread, though I am beginning to wonder why I bothered to join in, it's seems "mountains and mole hills" would be quite an appropriate sub-heading!

just to add some levity....

I thought there were only 24 hours in a day?:p

:D :D :D With all the in-depth debates about statistics and the amazing demonstrations of mathematical prowess I'm surprised it took someone so long to notice! I saw my basic error when I hit post, but decided to leave it to see if anyone noticed! Just probably goes to prove the point that, besides the obvious maths error, my post was not controversial enough to provoke enough interest to pick holes in my theory! :D

Nope...you clearly missed what happened here. We all saw the error once your post appeared. We decided not to comment on it until you did so that we could see if it was actually a true mistake, or something that you did on purpose to "test" people, stir up discontent, etc...

Don't you agree that we did the right thing by withholding the troll's food??

As stated by another poster (in a closed thread), we SALUTE those that smoke, drink and gamble to excess on cruises. Without you, those of us that don't do any of these things would have to pay more for our cruises!

Salute!

Awwww, since I didn't take Latin in school, I actually had to google this one.

Now "Merriam-Webster", as far as I know, is a very reliable source for definitions.

There definition is as follows "a method of procedure; especially: a distinct pattern or method of operation that indicates or suggests the work of a single criminal in more than one crime "

So I'm terribly sorry, I didn't realize having an opinion was a crime! I'll have to watch that from now on, since I wouldn't want to end up in some prison.

Love your attempt at posting something factual (kudos to you ;)) but as with most words sometimes you will find multiple definitions.

Noun: A particular way or method of doing something, esp. one that is characteristic or well-established.

Considering you have 5k plus comments, I considered you "well-established"

Hey, do you think the Senators can have another good season?

Here's something funny! I am a smoker and for the first time last year, we got a balcony on Carnival. I could smoke all I wanted, but I didn't have one cigarette on the balcony because I didn't want the smell to creep into our stateroom!!!!! I just went to the casino. For me smoking is a social thing and it was more fun to go to the casino at sit at the bar with all the other fellow smokers.

Excess???. Now I wouldn't go that far ;). without moderation...perhaps, slightly now and then overindulge...maybe, ok maybe more now than then ;). And here I thought that casino manager liked me for my good looks :D.

However my drinking days are far behind me, I've learned in my many years of life that overindulging there can cause big headache. :D

But you are most welcome, and happy that I can be helpful in keeping costs down.

.....you would never have smoke smell from anyone since it would be going behind the ship.

wasiii

No so ,we are always in the aft and we still get smoke from next door, not as much as on the side but it's still there and even worse when docked:(

Here is what I wish NCL would consider on a new build. How about 2 casinos. One non smoking another smoking and in that one add an adjacent BLUE LAGOON/SPORTS BAR. Give the smokers a place they can hang together and feel welcome and appreciated by NCL as paying customers.

As a non-smoker who loves to gamble in the casino I just can't stay in there much when it is busy at night. So I go some during the day. But I would be willing to spend more if it wasn't so smoky. To me, the casino is much more difficult than any balcony issue. A bank of non-smoking slot machines in a smoking casino is not desirable. If NCL can offer 12 restaurants on a ship why not 2 casinos?

They already did that. The Epic already has a separate non smoking casino. Granted it was empty the 2 times I was on the Epic.

Jim. Wow! I am on CC constantly and this is the first I hear of it! Maybe it is because I prefer the smaller ships like the Sun because they are easier for my mother to navigate. Is it still like that? That might garner a look. Thanks.

In re-reading my post, it's because I am geared to the smaller ships I have never researched the Epic or Breakaway... And have not read a lot of those ship's threads. Sorry, on iphone can't edit.

There is only one casino on Epic. However, there is a small "no smoking" area in it. However, when we were there the ventilation was so bad that non-smokers couldn't even tolerate the non-smoking area.

Thanks, Mike. So like the other NCL ships.
