This is from our Caribbean cruise onboard the Crown Princess Oct. 31-Nov. 6, 2010...

And this is our Alaska family cruise on Serenade of the Seas June 2009. A nice pair of dress slacks with a cocktail top works too for formal night, although my mom wore a long black skirt.

We did the whole 9 yards on our first cruise in '94, tux for him and evening gown for me.....never again. Now it's a dressy pair of black trousers and a couple of tops that I alternate....and I'm doing good to get a tie on him. From some of the outfits we saw in the dining rooms on our cruise last week......we were way overdressed.

I cannot wait to go on our first cruise and I personally think the formal dining occasions should be just that...... 'formal' and it should be considered part of the whole cruise experience.

Unfortunately most of us do not look like a glamour model or perhaps Tom Cruise but as far as I am concerned my wife is the most beautiful lady in the World and when we attend our first 'Formal Dinner' then she will be in an elegant evening dress which will be at least ankle length or even a full gown and I will be the proudest man on the whole ship, even though I will be in a wheelchair.. I also think that we 'he-males' should be in a tuxedo with a bow tie. The kilt is an excellent option for those entitled to wear it but I personally think trews look daft :o:o:o (apologies for being too out spoken)

Neither my wife or I own any such garments and will probably only ever wear them whilst cruising but to me a formal occasion is just that and for the less formal meals then no doubt she will wear a pretty dress and I will wear the usual jacket and tie or maybe a suit, so am I old fashioned? I guess so, and neither of us have ever dressed up before but I am a traditionalist and enjoy maintaining those old and perhaps quaint traditions that some cruise lines have always had.

Having seen some of the very nice suits, jackets and tie outfits that some men have elected to wear plus the lovely party dresses that some ladies have kindly modelled I am guessing that different cruise companies have differing standards of what is deemed 'formal' and I suppose as long as everyone realises that it is not a traditional 'Formal Dinner' and folks can wear whatever they choose then that to me is okee dokee.

I have definitely enjoyed looking at the excellent pictures and it has certainly given my wife and I some ideas, although being 6' 7" I doubt very much I will be wearing a kilt :)

I am NOT criticising any of the dresses that have been posted on this thread and please understand I am just making an observation regarding the dress code which to me I think is perhaps 'Black Tie'??

We're sailing on the Allure and I was under the impression that a nice sundress for girls and khaki or black slacks for guys was formal enough??

We don't want to be overdressed!
